I love that this might reach 400M dom after all, completely deserving.

What's the range for the Worldwide number? Around 900M? I remember people talking during its OW how it might not even reach 750M WW or something. Nice to see it really did break out.

$ 900m is dead, but $ 850m is basically locked (more if it can reach $ 400m in USA).

Rest of Alien's run:

Remainder of this week: 6M (63.3M Total)

Jun 2: 4M (2M weekdays, 69.3M Total)

Jun 9: 1.6M (800k weekdays, 71.7M Total)

Final Total: 74M (2.05x)

This is going to scrap past a 2x. God fucking damn.

Well, I win one casino bet easily and lose the other easily...guess you can't be perfect:)...

I think the BO starts its turn around next weekend, but I wouldn't go TOO high on estimates...I see Father's Day play for both movies and good summer weekdays, so people aren't gonna rush quite like they normally do, especially if there isn't monetary reason to do it...so caution on high end numbers, especially still theater and screen counts are out is probably good (my locals still haven't decided on CU and it's Sunday)...

So....

Is it safe to assume GOTG 2 makes below BvS's WW gross?

Does it have any other markets to open up in?

Yep, GV2 is ending with $830M-$850M WW.

It would need almost a 4.2 multiplier off this w/e (holiday inflated)  to hit $400m. Though Fathers Day might help soften next w/e drop I still don't see with all the big openers and it's going to start dropping theaters.  I think around $380-85m

Guardians it should do $ 850m, but if the movie still surprising it still could beat BvS, but barely.

Anyway, both grosses will be close.

Alien: Covenant is doing its best to make Godzilla and BvS look leggy.

How does a movie collapse 71% over a holiday weekend?? It's pretty crazy for sure.

As someone pointed out on WhatsApp, both Pirates and Alien would have done much much better if the previous installments never existed. Captain Jack returning after a long absence would have been huge instead of wasting that goodwill on Pirates 4 when it wasn't long enough between installments for nostalgia to kick in. Ridley Scott returning to Alien would also have been a huge deal if not for Prometheus.

its 7 day OS gross was less than 20m. No way its going to make another 100m WW. It has opened everywhere.

Domestically it will be  hit hard next weekend by Wonder Woman.

Guardians V2 keeps holding on like a beast. It beat the original in 4 weeks, despite being a sequel (thus, worse legs) and having much stiffer competition. Marvel just cannot comprehend the word "loss".

Alien proves that if Rotten Tomatoes and critics have any influence, it's opening weekend only (like a good marketing campaign, which is what ultimately good reviews come down to when it comes to the general audience - good marketing, and that's it), cause legs don't matter for shit. It's the Spielberg theory - the marketing team sells OW, the director sells the legs.

That was expected of it. POTC II made 400 M plus in 2006. TRANSFORMERS II made 400 M plus in 2009. The competition is not even stiff with releases after releases underperforming. Still, a finish of 370 M - 380 M is great for my summer game. lol
