Wonder Woman 1984's Mysterious Crystal May Be a Link to Justice League

Later this year, Wonder Woman 1984 will bring tons of classic parts of the DC Universe to life. Maxwell Lord, the Cheetah, and Wonder Woman's armor are all elements fans will be seeing in live-action for the very first time. Although an alleged synopsis recently surfaced online, we still don't officially know much about the upcoming DC Extended Universe film.

 

However, a new set of images from the film may have revealed the presence of a powerful artifact from the comic book DC Universe: the Chaos Crystal -- also known as the Chaos Shard.

 

 

The Chaos Crystal debuted in  Batman/Superman #3, by Greg Pak, Jae Lee and Yilidiray Cinar.  The Crystal comes from the Sphere of the Gods, an extra-dimensional reality where divine entities like Olympus, the New Gods and Apokolips exist.

 

The Chaos Crystal is able to augment the power of all those who hold it, while also granting the ability to make wishes when held. The United States in Earth-2, for example, uses it to create an anti-Superman weapon to deal with the Man of Steel should he ever prove a danger to American interests. However, the Crystal is ultimately shattered by Earth-2 Superman, with shards scattering all over the universe.

 

Darkseid and his henchmen appear to have sought the Chaos Shards. Darkseid claims the Chaos Crystal was forged on Apokolips, meaning that he is its rightful owner. Notably, Darkseid tried to take the Shards when Glorious Godfrey steals Damian Wayne's coffin after learning that Ra's al-Ghul hid a Chaos Shard with his grandson's corpse.

 

 

In Wonder Woman 1984, Pedro Pascal's Maxwell Lord apparently has a crystal of great importance. This could be a Chaos Crystal, and it could explain some of the biggest questions around the film right now. The Crystal's wish-granting abilities may be the reason Chris Pine's Steve Trevor returns, as well as how Kristen Wiig's Barbara Ann Minerva transforms into the Cheetah.

 

Since the Chaos Crystal hails from the Sphere of the Gods, it could have some connection to Olympus in this film, further tying into Wonder Woman's history with Greek mythology.

 

If this supposed Chaos Crystal still has its Apokoliptian origins, it could tie Wonder Woman 1984 back to Justice League or even to the in-development New Gods film.

 

 

Justice League featured Steppenwolf, one o Darkseid's generals, invading Earth in both the distant past and the modern DCEU. It's possible, therefore, that Steppenwolf brought the Chaos Crystal to Earth as a weapon and lost it.

 

The Chaos Crystal could also tease New Gods, either through its otherworldly origins or as a means of communicating extra-dimensional information to characters like Maxwell Lord. It's unlikely this information will overwhelm the core plot of the film, but any snippet of info can tease the greater DC Universe beyond the planet Earth, as well as lay a foundation for the more convoluted world of the New Gods.

 

Beyond that, however, the future remains uncertain. While the DCEU's films have generally been more stand-alone than, the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, every DCEU film since Justice League has included some references to the other films in the continuity. This might be the biggest, most concrete connection to the Justice League, which indicates perhaps the DCEU isn't going to sweep what happened in Justice League entirely under the rug.

 

 

Directed by Patty Jenkins, Wonder Woman 1984 stars Gal Gadot as Diana, Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, Kristen Wiig as Barbara Minerva/Cheetah, Pedro Pascal and Natasha Rothwell. The film arrives in theaters on June 5.

We can see that the stone is identical to the Chaos Crystal in the comics and to wield it you need to be a demi-god because it's too powerful, right? He might be connecting to gods or something in this scene:

I think every time a wish gets granted he gets more powerful "now I get something in return".

 

It's likely that the "absolute power corrupts" is coming in to play here and he's using the satellite to broadcast the stones power to everyone to get a massive boost in return, maybe trying to turn himself into a god.
