It sounds like Y6's Understand won't be the last Ted Chiang adaption we see from Hunt Productions. Rumor has it that the studio has given Denis Villeneuve a megabudget to adapt Tower of Babylon the award winning short story from 1991. Villeneuve previously directed an adaptiong of Chiang's The Story of Your Life which of course became the motion picture Arrival.

When asked about the project Villeneuve expressed excitement, "it's just really great to be given a huge budget to make something adult. Something very cerebral but also epic from a visual sense."

Maya Matsuoka (Shoplifters), Colin Firth (Kingsman: The Secret Service) and Mark Hamill (Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Star Wars: The Last Jedi) join the cast of the still untitled Blue and Gold sequel.

Matsuoka will play Traci Thirteen/Girl 13, a young sorceress who draws into street magic.

Firth plays The Ambassador, a deadly Reach tactician who wants to use Blue Beetle to join the Reach army and plays the main antagonist alongside Michelle Rodriguez’s Black Beetle, being a more physiological threat.

Hamill will voice Jaime’s Scarab who has gained sentience and in battle for dominance over Jaime’s body.

The untitled sequel is slated for Y7 but the studio isn’t ruling out a Y6 release provided Thirsty gets done.

The plot for Blue and Gold: Reaching Out has been revealed;

”It’s been a year since superhero best friends, the time traveling narcissist Michael Carter aka Booster Gold and the dorky yet extremely powerful Jaime Reyes aka Blue Beetle have saved the world. Unfortunately, as their friendship faces its biggest trial as during a drama filled school country road trip as Blue Beetle is succumbing in a battle for control against The Scarab, a Reach weapon from outer space that latched itself onto Jaime. Desperate for a cure, the two take a journey across the magical realm and the country whilst facing a diabolical teamup of their arch enemy Black Beetle and the dreaded member of the Reach, The Ambassador.”

Jodie Foster is departing from The Scavenger Wars Part III due to script revisions that saw the reduction if not outright elimination of the character she's portraying, brought on by a major shift as to who the main antagonist for the film is.

Changes are underway for the film as Cookie Pictures President and CEO Sebastian Peters ordered a new treatment for the threequel after the previous version was deemed unsatisfactory, Peters reportedly criticizing it for "creating more loose ends than it was able to tie up" and wishing to avoid repeating the mistakes that ultimately doomed the third Voltron film, as the SW franchise had ascended to being the studio's top tier IP following the former's cancellation.

The studio wants to remain coy on exact plot details until next year, but sources report that Jodie's departure is so that Ben Foster, who won an Academy Award for his performance as Jarek in the second film, can reclaim the center stage as the main antagonist. Talks are said to be underway for Jodie Foster to appear in other projects.

Same sources report the change will not affect the film's scheduled release in June Y7.

Endless Entertainment Update:

- Thirsty as well as You and I which is still in development and for Y6, will be under the Endless Entertainment banner despite the studio being known for blockbusters and family films and those films being R rated.

- Endless Entertainment has also created two new banners for Y7; Infinite Classics which is being made for purely Oscar aiming titles and low budget affair, and WhatAToon!, aiming to create PG-13/R rated animation with budgets between $60M-$125M under the Endless Entertainment label and a sister studio for the Oscar winning Endless Animation studio.

. WhatAToon! has two projects in development for a Y7 slot, the first being directed by Joaquin Dos Santos (Voltron, Star Fox) and written and produced by Donald Glover (Atlanta, The Lion King, Gateways), described as a mix of The Boondocks meets Avatar: The Last Airbender and aiming for a PG-13 rating and the latter directed by Rebecca Sugar (Notes From The Otherspace, Can You Imagine?, Steven Universe) which will be R rated and a take on anxiety as it tells the tale of a young man stranded on a fantastic and whimsical island for years deals with new problems.

@CookiePictures has released a few more details on Y7's A Smidge Too Human — directed by A Woman in the Crowd's Jeff Nichols — which will enter full production shortly.

The studio has announced that Nichols will produce and write the film along with Rick & Morty co-creator Justin Roiland serving a producing role with series head writer Mike McMahan assisting with the screenplay, aiming to balance the film's blend of sci-fi comedy and drama.

Nichols's main cinematographer Adam Stone and composer David Wingo are expected to return in their respective roles.

Along with the announcement, the studio put up an updated cast list revealing new/altered additions and character names:

Spoiler

1
Spoiler
  • LaKeith Stanfield as Lawson, an often absentminded android struggling with the concept of free will.
  • Chris Parnell as Darryl Hamilton, a bumbling human patriarch who regularly gets his family into trouble due to his incompetence.
  • Carrie Coon as Tress Hamilton, the headstrong human patriarch who often takes charge and takes a liking to firearms.
  • Emma Nelson as Donna Hamilton, Darryl and Tress's teenage daughter who's still advocating for social justice causes even after the apocalypse.
  • Mads Mikkelsen as Dr. Anders Jensen, a danish scientist and a stowaway in the Hamilton family vehicle who takes immediate fascination with Lawson.
  • Rachel Bloom as Amanda, an android whose defects turns her into an obsessive stalker who likes to press her face against glass windows.

with

  • Michael Shannon as Eric Stanwell, a mysterious deceased man with connections to Lawson's past.

and

  • Paul F. Tompkins as the voice of B.U.D.D.Y, an artificial intelligence created by the androids to serve their needs.

Here's a short synopsis as a reminder:

Quote

Some years after an android uprising wipes out nearly every human being on the Western hemisphere, the central mainframe authorizing the androids' directives suffers a catastrophic failure, leaving a whole population of androids free-standing and directionless. As their hardware start to age — in turn resulting in androids developing their own "personality quirks" — one roaming android faces the question of what it means to have free will when he comes across some of the few remaining human survivors.

A Smidge Too Human is aiming for an October/November release in Y7.

Cookie Pictures has announced the completion of the new outline for Y7's The Scavenger Wars Part III, and in turn its fourth part arriving the following year. This outline comes with major changes in order to streamline the original plan, and today the studio announces that parts three and four will, instead of being concurrent narratives, be part one and two of the same story.

The studio announced that in order to achieve this both parts are now set to be directed by Mass Effect's Matt Shakman and will be filmed back-to-back. President and CEO Sebastian Peters says the fourth film will "conclude the current story arc" and tie up all the loose ends Part II left behind. The studio then hopes to put the saga on hiatus for an indeterminate amount of time.

"We love doing this series," Peters explained. "We love the response we get, we love what they inspire and we love the connection people build with these characters — but I'll be the first to admit they're taxing enterprises. Part II saved our studio from a total collapse, but that doesn't mean it wasn't at times a nightmare to make."

"Some time ago, we were talking about completing the whole story in five movies. That meant doing three films in a row after Part II, and having to figure out how to satisfyingly wrap up every thread left in the series in the fifth film. Every option we looked at made that immensely difficult. The saga won't end with Part IV, but it'll close as many doors as possible so it'll feel like an ending to some, enough so it won't have to be immediately continued at least."

Peters mentioned that the possibility  of expanding the series into spin-offs had been discussed, but isn't currently on the table. "We finish the current arc, then we'll see where to go next."

Exact details on what the story changes entail will be announced in November (as in IRL November, not CAYOM November).

The Scavenger Wars Part III is set for release in June of Y7, with Part IV aiming for a Holiday Y8 window.
