In a world of civilized anthropomorphic animals, an alpaca runs for his life. Chasing after him is one of his fellow students, who has become a bloodthirsty predator ready to devour its prey. Once he's finally cornered, right before his sudden and gruesome death, the alpaca declares "you carnivores are nothing but monsters."

This are the explosive opening scene of Japanese artist Paru Itagaki's award-winning manga Beastars, a story which Alpha Pictures in association with Hourglass Pictures plans on bringing to theaters in the summer of Year 8. Directed by David Robert Mitchell (It FollowsUnder the Silver Lake), and produced in conjunction with Hollywood Animation Studios and WETA Digital, Alpha Pictures promises both a unique narrative and visual experience unlike anything else you'll see in Year 8.

The story focuses on Legoshi, a young, mild-mannered grey wolf student who attends the Cherryton Academy, a prestigious boarding school attended by both carnivores and herbivores. After the spine-chilling death of a fellow drama club member, Legoshi wants more than ever to hide from his fellow students no matter how much attention his imposing appearance draws. But after he encounters a female dwarf rabbit student at night on the campus grounds, he can't figure out whether his desire to see her again is out of sexual attraction or his biological instinct to devour her. As he struggles with this burning moral question, the tensions between carnivore and herbivore students continue to grow, and the hidden structures that keep this animal society running are exposed.

Beastars marks Alpha Pictures' first foray into motion-capture computer animation. However, according to Mitchell, the studio wasn't looking for him to replicate reality and the look of real animals. "The studio really wanted someone who could bring the look and sensibilities of live-action filmmaking into a computer-animated world." Working closely with animation cinematographers Patrick Lin and Jean-Claude Kalache (Toy Story 4), the duo worked closely on modeling the look of Beastars' virtual environment on real camera lenses, placing the aesthetics and character design of Itagaki's hand-drawn work into an incredibly detailed virtual world. "It was a kind of synthesis that we struggled with at first, but I think the end result was fantastic," says Mitchell.

And while Beastars joins a roster filled with other manga/anime adaptations in Y8, Mitchell promises a film that's "more character-centric and less plot-driven." Inspired by live-action films like Donnie DarkoPunch-Drunk LoveMagnolia and the filmography of David Lynch, as well as television series like Twin Peaks and The Sopranos, Mitchell describes it as a mix of several genres. "You could classify it as a comedy, a romance, a coming-of-age film, an action film, even a horror film. It has a little bit of everything."

The Cast:

II3sP7o.jpg

Alex Wolff (Hereditary, Dear Evan Hansen) leads the ensemble cast as Legoshi, the grey wolf protagonist of Beastars. While his towering height and his intimidating set of fangs might suggest he’s a menacing carnivore waiting for the right time to lash out, Mitchell sees Legoshi as “more introverted, socially-awkward...he tries his hardest not to scare those around him. He’s very self-conscious that way.” When Wolff was approached for the role, at first he was “afraid of all the potential wolf-Wolff puns,” but that Legoshi ended up being one of his favorite roles.

oRKxZMN.jpg

Maya Hawke (Stranger Things, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) stars as Haru, a dwarf rabbit who single-handedly runs the school’s gardening club and becomes the object of Legoshi’s confused desire. While Hawke imagines that it could be very easy for audiences to put Haru into a box as a “nymphomaniac” due to her sexual promiscuity (and while some of her scenes make up Beastars’ more controversial content), she views Haru as someone who’s “really looking for emotional connection, and detests superficiality...what really drew me to her as a character was her fearlessness, and her willingness to fight back against a stereotype that everyone’s placed on her.”

seAw34c.jpg

Harry Styles (Dunkirk, One Punch Man) as Louis, the red deer president of the school drama club and the leading candidate for the title of Beastar. “He’s someone who refuses to be underestimated just for being a herbivore, so at any given moment he’s looking for an opportunity to lead the pack, to be the voice of authority,” according to Mitchell. Styles described Louis as being the “emotionally-volatile rock star” of the drama club: “he can be very charming, outgoing, but he can also be quite ruthless, unsympathetic to his colleagues...he’s like the commander-in-chief of the school, which makes his interactions with Legoshi, a carnivore, very interesting.” Despite his more negative traits, Styles believes he’s a “very complex, interesting character to delve into.”

Beyond the three main players, Taylor Russell (Waves, Bleach) stars as Juno, an idealistic wolf student who wants to create a better world for carnivores where they aren’t feared, but respected instead, while Viveik Kalra (Blinded by the Light, Yang) plays Jack, a cheery Golden Retriever and Legoshi’s childhood best friend, and Joel Courtney (The Kissing Booth, The Kissing Booth 2) plays Bill, a brash and confident Bengal tiger and a member of the drama club who Courtney describes as the “antithesis to Legoshi...someone who isn’t ashamed of being a carnivore.”

XFIb0Hc.jpg

Finishing off the supporting cast is Colman Domingo (If Beale Street Could Talk, Yang) as Gohin, a tough-minded giant panda who treats carnivores’ meat addictions, while Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic, Eastern Promises) as Ogma, Louis’ enigmatic father and the mega-rich owner of a multinational conglomerate in a role that’s been expanded heavily from the comics.

Bokeem Woodbine (Fargo, Spider-Man: Homecoming) also stars in an undisclosed but pivotal role.

And according to Alpha Pictures, this list of names doesn’t even make up half of the gigantic ensemble populating the expansive world of Beastars that remains unannounced.

Beastars will open in theaters everywhere on June 28th, Year 8, as well as select IMAX and Dolby Cinema locations.

Spoiler

Animation has always been a focal point of Endless Entertainment says CEO Xavier B. Irving. The studio Endless Animation has created 14 animated features, 11 which have been nominated for Best Animated Feature and 2 of which having won Best Animated Feature and gotten Best Picture nominations. However, noticing the lackluster reception from Should You Imagine? and Toons V Reality, some critics got tired of Endless’ fun formula and wanted more bold films.

Xavier B. Irving was reportedly outraged by Noelle Stevenson’s comments and has been put on the “Do Not Hire” list for all five studios at Endless. Irving also noted the lack of films that deal with issues that the African American community face or films that truly resonate in CAYOM. Irving meet with Academy Award winners Matthew A. Cherry (Hair Love) for lunch and discussed the lack of black stories in CAYOM especially animation. Irving offered Matthew A Cherry a chance to pitch his idea, who got permission from Ava DuVernay to use an old draft of Phoenix.

“When you look at the animation field in CAYOM, to be a dire lack of black protagonists. You had actors and actresses like Marsai Martin in Should You Imagine?, Yara Shahidi in the Bounty Hamster franchise and Donald Glover, who won an Academy Award for Gateways. But apart from that there’s not much in terms of black leads or stories. If we want the world to change, then we need to inspire the youth. I drew inspiration from stories such as Coming to America and the animated Static Shock show, combined that with thrills of Jordan Peele films and the wonder of other Endless Animation works like Can You Imagine and Gateways.” says Cherry. “Irving bought the pitch so quick and said to ms, this could change the game.”

The Griffiths are like any normal family, except their bloodline has been known for centuries as magic wielding protectors as The Neighbors, who protected both Earth and the magical realm, which is brimming to life with wizards, mermaids, vampires and any other fantasy creatures that pops up in your head.

Our story takes place with the Griffith Family leaving their small town in the magical realm to move to Milwaukee to get more in touch with Earth customs, where we center in our protagonists, the 13 year old twins Dominic (Caleb McLaughlin) and Ayanna (Skai Jackson), both of whom are at the age where they inherit their parents job as a peacemaker of both realms, learning magic, watching dreams and more. Ayanna embraces this while Dominic wants to be normal and conform to Earth culture. Things grow interesting as the twins are now attending a prestigious, elite and rather segregated high school due to their great grades and parents’ pushing as well as moving into the heart of the black community as the Griffiths attempts to figure out Earth society.

Things become more complicated when a longtime enemy of the Griffith family, The Nightmare King (Kevin Michael Richardson) creator of nightmares and consumer of fears has unleashed nightmare monsters throughout the night. Dominic and Ayanna hone the skills, face their own fears, and to a lesser extent navigate high school in order to stop The Nightmare King’s dastardly plot for worldwide chaos.

Like Endless Animation’s previous works Toons v Reality and Super Mario Bros, Producer Ava DuVernay wanted The Neighborhood to have themes, but a bit more explored and nuanced than those two films mainly due to it centers around the topic of racism.

Cherry says “One thing DuVernay, Irving and I wanted the three main focal points in terms of themes, racism, culture shock and imposter syndrome. We wanted to show how all of these are real everyday factors, especially for black immigrants, like the Griffiths have to face as well as being underestimated.”

Caleb McLaughlin (Stranger Things, Broadway’s The Lion King) stars as the main protagonist Dominic Griffith, the whip-smart yet somewhat insecure teen. Dominic is the most proficient at magic in the family’s history yet is more interested in Earth culture and being normal.

Skai Jackson (Heartman, Disney’s Jessie) stars as the other main protagonist Ayanna Griffith, the passionate and kind-hearted teen, who is Dominic’s twin sister. Despite the two’s occasional bickering, the two are the best of friends. However while Dominic strives to be ordinary, Ayanna strives to be extraordinary, as she struggles with the magic her brother can do.

Regina Hall (Girls Trip, The Hate U Give) plays Victoria Griffith, the mother of Dominic and Ayanna as well as Joel’s wife. While Victoria is in fact a human, she’s still learned a bit of magic and is quite resourceful.

Mahershala Ali (Moonlight, Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse) plays Joel Griffith, the father of Dominic and Ayanna as well as Victoria’s husband. In his heyday, Joel was one of the most powerful Neighbors in existence as he attempts to bestow his values onto his kids.

Kevin Michael Richardson (Lilo and Stitch, The Batman) plays The Nightmare King, the ethereal antagonist of the film, a powerful god who feasts of the fear of other, and longtime enemy of the Griffith family.

Will Smith (Aladdin, Men In Black) plays Pockets, a charming pickpocketing shapeshifter goblin who is both a nuisance and family “friend” to the Griffith

Alfre Woodard (Crooklyn, 12 Years A Slave) plays Pamela Griffith, Joel’s old-fashioned mother who is rather distasteful towards Earth culture.

Sidney Poitier (They Call Me Mr. Tibbs) plays Walter Griffith, Joel’s wisecracking father who enjoys a bit of mischief.

Tyrel Jackson Williams (Lab Rats, Brookmire) plays King, a street smart neighbor who winds up forming a bond with Dominic.

Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Castle) plays Principal Blight, the head of Brightstone Academy, who is rather smug and condescending towards the Griffiths, but there’s much more to this snake that meets the eye.

Jenna Ortega (You, Jane The Virgin, Endless Animation’s upcoming Soulmates) as Susana, a seemingly nice and popular student at Brightstone Academy.

While it won’t reach the budgets heights of Should You Imagine or Gateways, the film is said to carry a $150M+ budget. “I mean we’re Endless Animation. We got to flaunt why we are on top of our game.” says Irving. Once again, Endless Animation’s award winning Worldmeander is used. However, the studio won’t use the 2.5D that hits like The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Pigeon or Medusa but will fine tune the methods used for Toons v Reality. The world that the characters live in is said to be Pixar/WDAS esque CGI but the dream world and the nightmares are done in different animation styles for different types of dreams.

  • A good or happy dream is a lavish watercolor like 2D animation

  • Premonition like dreams use a more anime inspired 2D animation

  • Whilst nightmares and the nightmare creatures use stop motion (provided by Laika) look more abstract, bizarre and surreal as well as use of sock puppets

Apart from the director and most of the cast, the film is having an all African or African American crew including having mostly black animators. Bruce W Smith (Hair Love, The Proud Family, The Princess and The Frog) is designing the characters, Ryan Coogler (Black Panther, Space Jam: A New Legacy) and Ava DuVernay (Selma, A Wrinkle in Time) will produce the film as Ian Jones-Quartey (Steven Universe, O.K. K.O.: Let’s Be Heroes) will write the script alongside Cherry and Taylor K. Shaw as Ian acts as a co-director. Terrence Blanchard (Da 5 Bloods, BlacKkKlansman) will score the film.

Endless Animation will release the project on May 31st, Y8, as Larrikins will take My Hero Academia’s September slot (which is heading for a Y9 release as previously speculated) but be pushed to September 6th, to distance itself from Olive 2. The Untitled Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Project (which is the final title) will remain on December 13th, Y8.

Numerator Pictures has undertaken a scheduling shakeup to better synchronize long-term IP planning. As a result of this, Pillars of Eternity: The Forgotten Army has been bumped 3 months out of Year 9 to March, Year 10. Taking its slot in Numerator Pictures' Studio Plans is a presently untitled new fantasy IP. Information about this new IP is scarce, but sources at the studio say information about the film will start being released following the closure of Part 1 of Year 8.

As a consequence of Pillars of Eternity: The Forgotten Army moving to March Year 10, the studio's planned revisionist take on Robin Hood, Nottingham, is being pushed out of spring Year 10 to spring Year 11.

Lana Condor (Miraculous, By The Balls), Morena Baccarin (Deadpool, Firefly), Aiden Turner (NCIS: Los Angeles, Agents of Shield), and Thomas Kretschmann (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Stalingrad) have joined the  cast of Green Arrow: The Ninth Circle, directed by Paul Greengrass (the Bourne series, the Call of Duty series).

A summary has been disclosed below, “Taking place a year after the events of the first, Oliver Queen (Charlie Hunnam) has taken on the mantle of the vigilante, Green Arrow, who has made quite a bit of fans, inspiring vigilantes such as Arsenal (Lana Condor) while making quite a bit of enemies. However, things escalate when a series of murders and kidnappings of Star City’s wealthiest people, that leads to The Ninth Circle, an almost Illuminati like group said to have controlled the country for centuries, who is attempting to go after the Green Arrow. Oliver Queen, must uncover the truth behind the organization, battling his way through the various crime groups of Star City controlled by the Circle, such as Count Vertigo (Thomas Kretschmann) and other villains, as well as attempt to prevent a hostile takeover of Queen Industries by his longtime friend/rival Malcom Merlyn (Aiden Turner).”

As Endless Entertainment strives for more of a push for black centered entertainment with Y8 with Static Shock: Dakota Legends sequel to Y5’s Static Shock, The Neighborhood, CAYOM’s first mainstream animated film with a black director (Matthew A. Cherry), producers, writers and majority of the cast, and Heartman, Carribean horror film from and DeCosta, has partnered with Milestone Media to use their characters for film adaptations.

Plan are to have Icon, Rocket and Hardware join Static in the Endless’ World of DC Characters in the live action front, as it’s rumored the three will be introduced in Static 2

Cookie Pictures has announced new cast member additions to Rian Johnson's still untitled sci-fi project set to hit theaters on June 14th, Year 8. The additions include Kenneth Branagh (Murder on the Orient Express, The Scavenger Wars Part II), Golshifteh Farahani (Extraction, Notorious), Ian McShane (Odyssey trilogy, John Wick series), Steve Buscemi (Boardwalk Empire, The Death of Stalin) and Michael Cimino (Love, Victor). Farahani will replace Jennifer Ehle in the yet to be disclosed part, and reliable sources tell Cayom Magazine that Branagh's character is written to be the film's main antagonist thanks to a new version of the script delivered by writer and director Rian Johnson on Friday.

Branagh, Farahani, McShane, Buscemi and Cimino join the already impressive cast list featuring Hugh Jackman, Alex Wolff, Jake Gyllenhaal, Kaitlyn Dever, Daniel Craig, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Michael Shannon, Kelly Marie Tran and Lance Reddick. Because of the prolific cast and expected production and effects work taking place, the budget is said to be approaching $250 million, which would tie it with The Scavenger Wars Part III as the studio's most expensive single feature.

Another tidbit stemming from a chat the magazine had with Peters is that, despite prior reports, the film is not a space opera. Rather, Peters compares the film to ground-level sci-fi and fantasy films such as Hypercompetency and Pillars of Eternity. He also reveals that the film's title has been settled, but exact details on story and characters won't come "until it's ready," as the studio is pivoting away from "telling too much too early" due to previous instances like Scavenger Wars two and three were early details did not match the final product. Peters does however suggest that an official reveal will be "soon."

Endless Entertainment is announcing a new original musical for Y8. Seth MacFarlane (The Orville, Toons v Reality, Family Guy) is said to be the lead actor and write part of the script while James Bobin (Dora and The Lost City of Gold, Freddy Zapper) will direct. The film is said to a love letter to broadway musicals as Seth MacFarlane’s character, a sleazy songwriter dealing with writers block, finds himself stuck in his own musical.
