Studio Groundswell is proud to announce its next fairy tale reimagining following Tongue Tied.

Aurora, directed by Countdown City’s Mimi Leder, retells the story of Sleeping Beauty and follows Princess Aurora as she’s tricked into pricking her finger—but in a twist, Aurora wakes up in a dream, and she must navigate the dream world to find a way back to consciousness. Therefore, Aurora, an alleged cross between Sleeping Beauty and Lucid, reimagines the titular “Sleeping Beauty” as a far more active character than some narratives have suggested in the past. The part of Princess Aurora will be played by Thomasin McKenzie. The film is eyeing a Christmas Day Y10 release.

Studio Groundswell will release an independent horror film during May Y10. A film by X’s Ti West, The Shell is a hard-R southern gothic zombie horror film where grotesque-looking zombies attack about twenty-five-ish people at a country river-house during an oyster roast.

On the poster, it’s a picture of an unshucked oyster sitting isolated on a white folding table, and there’s some blood splattered on it.

The film will feature chaotic zombie pandemonium and tell a story about the corruptibility of human nature, as well as the preciousness and fragility of human life.

Klonoa: Door to Phantomile has been postponed indefinitely, Groundswell now confirms.

“Narrative similarities between Aurora and Klonoa have emerged,” says a spokesperson, “and we want each of our films to come across as unique as possible.”

Meanwhile, Jorge R. Gutierrez and Groundswell have come to a mutual agreement that Milk Ninja doesn’t have enough of a story to it, so that project is being shelved indefinitely. Groundswell is going back to the development board to brainstorm more original animated film concepts.

Studio Groundswell: News Updates

- The Klonoa: Door to Phantomile adaptation is officially un-canceled, per sources. "We got to the ending of the game, and we're like... Yeah, this needs to be a film. Who cares if it's similar to another film?" Tenzing Norgay Trainor (Abominable) has been selected to voice Klonoa; more cast details to come soon.

- Groundswell is examining the prospects of finishing the Scythe trilogy. "The second film in the series, Thunderhead, might not get IMAX like the first one did, but we see financial worth in continuing the series regardless of the first film's reception." Matthew Vaughn would still direct if the second film happens.

Endless Animation has secured the rights to the popular Discworld novel, Mort. Mort is said to join the lineup of more adult skewing animation Endless Animation has in the pipeline, alongside Sleepy Hollow, Rust, Lyrical, and Cupid INC. The rating will likely be PG-13, given the novel’s material. The animation style is undecided but it’s between stop motion animation or traditional hand drawn animation. John Musker and Ron Clements (Moana, The Princess and the Frog, Aladdin) are said to be directing the project as they were initially slated to irl. The project is aiming for a Y12 release but could be pushed upwards.

Fossil Record Collaborates with Chung and Kosemen

About two weeks ago, Fossil Record Studios CEO Mark Pierce cryptically alluded to "new talent" that would bolster the fledgling animation studio's reputation. Now, it seems, the identities of at least two of those people have been unofficially revealed, thanks to social media posts. Both are veteran artists who have a reputation for making the kind of offbeat work Fossil Record strives to release under its main label.

Three days ago, Peter Chung (best known as the creator of the TV series Aeon Flux) tweeted "#BlackWater" and an emoji of a whale in response to a fan inquiring if he had any upcoming film or TV projects. Black Water is the title of an upcoming Fossil Record film with no set director or date, which has been described as a "hard-R animated horror movie" about a young pilot whale enduring the grindadrapp, or Faroese whaling season. While it is unknown if Chung is in fact the movie's director or if he has another role, his surreal, dark animation that made him so famous with Aeon Flux fits quite well with the movie based on what is known about it.

The other collaborator, surprisingly, is not an animator or even a filmmaker at all, but Turkish science-fiction artist Cevdet Mehmet Kosemen. He is most famous as the writer and illustrator of All Tomorrows, a novel about the future evolution of humanity that became an internet sensation last year. Unlike Chung, Kosemen directly confirmed his involvement with Fossil Record, going on to say, "The rumors are true-- Snaiad is becoming a movie! I've been tapped by Fossil Record Studios for an undisclosed position." Snaiad is Kosemen's longest-running project, an online field guide to the wildlife of an alien planet. The plot of the upcoming Snaiad animated movie is unknown, as is whether or not it will employ Kosemen's signature watercolor style of drawing.

While being careful not to name the new talent, Pierce spoke excitedly about them at a conference today. "We're excited to have contributors who are outside our normal wheelhouse-- people who are, as I see it, real artists, not just Hollywood animators."
