There's some release date shake-ups going on over at Studio Groundswell:

- Klonoa: Door to Phantomile has its release date moving up from September to April. "We saw that Luigi's Mansion was moving on into September, and we were like yikes," said a spokesperson. "We were initially a little concerned about Pac-Man's March position and Klonoa's April position butting heads since they're two Namco adaptations, but we've realized, hey, they'll probably feed into each other, and they're different enough as a live-action versus an animation."

Onimusha has been taken off the release schedule until further notice. "We're not sure if we're moving forward with it yet," said a spokesperson.

- Conversely, Thunderhead, the Scythe sequel, is moving ahead for an August bow despite the middling reviews of the predecessor.

- The Needles of Haystack County will release on July 3rd, Independence Day weekend! "While that's admittedly close to Scavenger Wars IV," said a spokesperson, "we see it as an opportunity cuz one film's a sci-fi and the other's a western, so it's like the 60s and 70s all over again, you know? It's a battle of cowboys and astronauts, of lasers and lassos. And no doubt you'll have plenty of folks wanting a look at both setting, both the Great Plains and Great Beyond. It'll make for an exciting balance this Summer!"

In doing so, M’gann allies herself with billionaire Oliver Queen/Green Arrow (Charlie Hunmann) and fellow Green Martian J’onn J’onnz/Martian Manhunter (Lance Reddick) to ensemble a team of Earth’s finest heroes to unite against the White Martian insurgents and further unlock the secret history of the metagene.”

Details have leaked from Endless Animation’s Gateways: The Gates of Eternity on the characters Mark Hamill, Samuel L Jackson and Kelly Marie Tran will play. The film is still trucking for a Christmas Y11 release.

•Kelly Marie Tran as Sunset. Sunset belonged to an ancient religion, The Children of Levi when she was just a child. However, over the decades Levi left her planet, creating a genocidal war that left her the last of her kind. However, she was raised and saved by Nyle, traveling the multiverse and causing her own brand of chaos along the way but without a sense of purpose. Sunset did experience the multiverse inversion when Bailee met her father, and upon that learned that the Watchers were in fact real. Sunset also learns about the source code, the lifeblood of all realities and when unlocked gives the user the ability to define what the rules of reality are. Though she harbors disdain for Levi and The Watchers, why should she waste energy crusading against them, if she could use the code to become a better deity instead.
• Samuel L. Jackson as Zenith. Once the proud leader of the Watchers for millennials, only to be fired 1000 years ago upon a breaking Watchers guidelines upon personal dissatisfaction of how lax the Watchers have become. Zenith was also a father figure and mentor to Levi, but Zenith’s attitude and gaslighting drove the two apart and got Zenith disbarred from the Watchers. Upon learning on Sunset’s raid on Watchers Headquarters for the map of the Source Code, Zenith must help Levi re-harness his abilities and patch things up if he wants to save reality.

• Mark Hamill as Nyle Serpens, the anthropomorphic silverback serpentine, multiversal crime lord and Sunset’s adoptive father. Nyle would much rather smuggle goods or control crime in universes than to go head to head with The Watchers. Nyle teams up with Sunset on her quest to become a goddess by unlocking the source code, however, as shady as Nyle is, this partnership seems to be fragile at best.

The themes at play for the film are about fatherhood, with the various dynamics between fathers of the film and their children: Levi and Bailee, Levi and Zenith, Sunset and Nyle. Levi is really pressed on being a father to Bailee as well as dealing with both his disdain for Zenith yet wanting his approval also.

Fossil Record Animation Conference Reveals Studio Plans

Hot on the heels of Fossil Record's collaboration with Peter Chung and C. M. Kosemen, the company held a shareholder meeting today in which they revealed a great deal about the company's upcoming plans. The actual meeting was several hours in length, and cannot be reproduced here in its entirety. However, with Mark Pierce's permission, we have compiled a list of the highlights from it that will likely affect the studio's plans going forward.

-- Citing the lackluster critical reception to Dinosaucers, Molly and Emmet, and last year's Frankenstein Jr., The Workshop-- Fossil Record's label for children's and family films-- will be reorganized. No currently-in-production Workshop movies have been cancelled, but they will proceed with more oversight from the main Fossil Record movie division than they did before.

-- In The Piper's Wake will take the previously established release date of The Xenoscope in Y10, due to it being more complete. The new release date for The Xenoscope is unknown, but most analysts expect it to be in Y11 or Y12.

-- Pat Mills, creator of Judge Dredd and other famous British comics, was mentioned to be "in talks" with the studio regarding the upcoming 2000 AD movie adaptations-- Judge Dredd, Flesh, Strontium Dog, and ABC Warriors. His actual role in the movie is unknown. A spinoff ABC Warriors TV series was also stated to be in the planning stages, but nothing more was said about it.

-- A previously-unknown movie was revealed. Titled Fishergirls, its release date, rating, and director are unknown, but the poster at the conference shows a tiny wooden sailboat underneath a pink sky with two moons, with three figures standing on it.

Cookie Pictures Animation is bumping up Cassie and Marion Save the Universe, the third film in the Bounty Hamster series which the studio inherited from Hourglass Pictures, to a Y10 release. Animation director Chris Williams (BoltThe Sea Beast) will join franchise mainstay David Soren in the director’s position.

A story synopsis has also been shared with magazine:

Quote

Two years after the events of ’Two Lonely Bounty Hamsters’, life couldn’t be better for retired space bounty hunter Cassie (Sophia Lillis). She aces her way through college, her parents can’t be more proud of her, she basks in being a minor celebrity as a former hunter who’s saved the world, and she’s closer than ever with her girlfriend Sylphina (Yara Shahidi). With graduation on the horizon, Cassie looks towards the next stage of her life—Settling down.

What isn’t steady, however, is her increasingly distant relationship with her former bounty hunter partner, Marion (Charlie Day). The blue hamster, known all across the galaxy for his vast swallowing ability, has resigned to the bounty hunter role full time in order to fill the lonely void left in his heart. This consequently leads Marion to accept an offer from King Dinosys (Benicio Del Toro) and Queen Ophéline (Claire Foy)—antropomorphic lizard rulers of the Planet Kingdom of Varanus—to hunt down a rogue terrorist known as Titanide (Matt Damon) and bring him in, dead or alive.

Thinking this will be a simple and easy job (and too undiscerning to figure otherwise), Marion sets out to capture Titanide. However, an unexpected ambush soon turns the hunter into the hunted—Marion finds himself the target of Titanide and his vast syndicate instead of the other way around!

When news of Marion being on the run reaches Cassie, she is forced to step back into the bounty hunter role in order to save her old friend. When the leads of Marion’s whereabouts start to dry up, Cassie is forced to team up—against Sylphina’s explicit wishes—with Sylphania’s disowned father, the infamous bounty hunter Equinox Blazenback III (Jonathan Majors), a decision that’ll come to be of great consequence down the line. Meanwhile, a fleeing Marion stumbles into a web of lies, deceit, and intrigue that pierces through the very heart of Varanus, leading him and Cassie to question not just what they’ve gotten themselves into, but what it even means to be a bounty hunter.

Cassie and Marion Save the Universe also features Anthony Carrigan, Kate McKinnon, Abigail Breslin, and Carl Lumbly. Mikael Persbrandt also joins the voice cast as Mr. Peterson, a Varanus underworld crime boss who runs a bootleg film studio on the side.

Studio Groundswell is proud to announce that its Y9 action film Devil Bean will be getting a sequel titled Devil Bean II: Revenge of the Bean, coming to theaters in Y11. The sequel will bring back many characters from the first film, and it will also feature a fun variety of new characters that are just as zany if not more so.

Studio Groundswell is also sponsoring a video game tie-in for the first movie—a fighting game titled Devil Bean: The Video Game coming to the Cayomstation 5 (or the CS5 as the cool kids call it)—and they’ve also sponsored merchandise such as Halloween costumes and action figures.

Phoenix Fire Entertainment's upcoming Y10 blockbuster novel adaptation Cloud Cuckoo Land has found a new director.

The film was previously set to be helmed by Little Fish director Chad Hartigan. The studio will still work with Hartigan in some other project, but for Cloud Cuckoo Land, the vision is greater than that.

Negotiations are concluded and the film's newest director will be none other than...

Spoiler

220px-NASA_Journey_to_Mars_and_%E2%80%9C

...the legendary Ridley Scott!

Scott's filmography has a total of 41 Academy Award nominations (including three Best Director nominations) and 9 wins. It spans four decades and a half, including iconic films such as Alien (1979), Blade Runner (1982), Gladiator (2000), The Martian (2015) and, most recently, The Last Duel (2021).

In CAYOM, Scott's sole directorial credit is Y4's I Am Omega: Part One.

Cookie Pictures has today outlined an overhauled roadmap of the future of the Scavenger Wars saga. Titled Project Ethereal, the plan involves a revised story outline that forms a new trilogy of films spanning the fourth, fifth, and sixth chapters of the sci-fi franchise, each set for release one year apart from another, time and production willing.

The first of the new trilogy (and the fourth in the overall franchise), is aiming for release on June 19th, Y10. Unless previous Scavenger Wars films, however, this new entry will no longer bear the ”Part [roman numeral]” in the title, instead sporting its own unique subtitle that’ll be standardized for future entries. The reason the numerals are being dropped, Cookie Pictures President and CEO Sebastian Peters explained during the briefing, is that the first three films form their own ”Khouga Trilogy”, and it was decided that since the new trilogy would establish new worlds, characters, and stakes, then giving it its own unique identity via the title was the best way to advertise that fact up front.

One of the major announcements during the briefing was that Patty Jenkins, who was previously set to direct but was then replaced by Julie Taymor, would return to helm this overhauled version of the film after a new deal has been worked out between both directors. That means Jenkins directs the fourth film while Taymor produces it, and Taymor instead directs the second entry (and the fifth film in the franchise overall) while Jenkins is involved in producing it.

The reason for this split is both creative and logistical—the fifth film is scheduled for an unspecified Y11 date and will involve a different set of cast and characters than the fourth film, and both films would be shot nearly simoultanously, making it difficult, if not impossible, for one director to helm both films. Both films will also have their scripts revised to play to each director’s strengths, as well as compliment one another so the transition between the two films still feel natural. No director has been confirmed for the third entry in the trilogy (and sixth film overall)—scheduled for an unspecified Y12 release—and it is unknown wether either Jenkins or Taymor will be approached to helm a second time, or a new director will be sought. The goal, however, is for all three films to be directed by women—to differentiate from the first three films in the franchise, which all had male directors.

The other major detail revealed is that with Jenkins’s re-entry into the project, both the story and the cast for the fourth film have seen major overhauls (some sources go as far as to describe it as the studio hitting the restart button on the whole thing and doing the film over from scratch) with almost all of the previously announced cast seeing changes and alterations. According to Peters, only Daniel Henney, Naomi Scott, and Robert Pattinson remain from the original draft, with Pattinson now officially playing the film’s main antagonist (while Henney and Scott reprise their roles as Joel and Kira as the story’s protagonists).

The three retained cast members make up one half of what Peters calls the ”Big Six”, which include three undisclosed ”Academy Award-nominated actresses” make up the second half of that line-up. The supporting cast beneath these six main stars have seen a complete overhaul as well.

No further details on the cast, story, or even the film’s title were revealed, but Cookie Pictures is planning to reveal the full cast as well as a detailed synopsis this coming weekend. ”We’d love to reveal it all today, but there are a few final kinks needed to be worked out,” Peter says, ”it’s one hell of ensemble we’re working with, though.”

On the cusp of announcing that Sir Ridley Scott will direct Y10's sci-fi epic Cloud Cuckoo Land, Phoenix Fire Entertainment would like to make some other announcements regarding its upcoming slate.

---

First of all, the studio can confirm that both the Phoenix Fire/Scott Free production Cloud Cuckoo Land and Christina Choe's fantasy drama The Enormous Radio (Phoenix Fire/The New Yorker Studios) have both finished shootings and are in a late post-production state. Currently slated for Y10 are also Beth McCarthy-Miller's sci-fi action comedy sequel MBWII: The Second Monster Bug Wars, sequel to Y7's Monster Bug Wars - it an adaptation of the 2011 TV show of the same name; and Debra Granik's drama Soil, based on a short story of the same name by Arianna Reich.

---

Mike OwensMCKillswitch123_A_woman_a_man_an_alien_w

One movie that was originally going to feature in the Y10 slate was the animated film Sackboy, an adaptation of the PlayStation video game franchise LittleBigPlanet. But, the project has been sent back and will be worked on from scrap as something else, rather than the project it was originally set to be. The studio is currently reevaluating its options with the LittleBigPlanet IP.

As such, directors Mike Owens and Shadi Petosky (Danger & Eggs), who were previously working on Sackboy, have now renegotiated to helm Tatiana's Journey, the anticipated sequel to Y8's box office hit Mighty Fall, which will likely find its release date on Spring Y10.

The resumed premise for Tatiana's Journey:

Quote

"Months after rescuing the planet of Tersuto, the crew of the ship Tatiana finds itself at odds. Jane (Olivia Cooke) thinks that they should focus on being bounty hunters and avoid trouble altogether; while Allyarah (Naomi Scott), who's becoming increasingly more of a leader, believes they should go after the galactic dictator known as the Trucidator. As the crew splits over the dilemma, questions arise as to how far are the members of the Tatiana willing to go for one another, rather than for themselves."

The film will allegedly have a far more comedic tone in comparison to the previous entry in the series, while still retaining the elements of action-adventure and a new angle of romance/sexuality exploration, and the Owens + Petosky duo was agreed to fit the criteria better than the previous directors, the duo of Mike Levin and Jennifer Flackett (Big Mouth).

Because Phoenix Fire is pro-worker rights and does not appreciate leaving behind any creators due to different creative directions, Levin and Flackett will work on another project for Phoenix Fire, possibly an original film for either Phoenix Fire Family Animation (Invader Zim) or the more alternative Phoenix Fire Artstyles (the Vixen franchise), or, not off the table yet, the opportunity to direct the third Tatiana film, should such film go forward (depending on what direction the studio, Owens and Petosky take with Journey).

---

Steven Spielberg by Gage Skidmore.jpghttps://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/416TvTnIorL.jpg

One other project that's being considered for Y10 is the first collaboration between Phoenix Fire and Amblin Entertainment, as the legendary Steven Spielberg (Jaws, E.T.: the Extra-Terrestrial, West Side Story, The Fabelmans, Y4's Fortnight) is set to direct a modernized adaptation of what is widely perceived to be the coup-de-grace of acclaimed writer Shirley Jackson's portfolio, the 1948 short story The Lottery. Spielberg, whose sole CAYOM credit remains Numerator Pictures' Fortnight, was previously going to collaborate with Phoenix Fire for the video game anthology film Dreams; however, unexpected fast-tracking of such project to Y8 (originally scheduled for Y9), led to scheduling conflicts that ended up seeing Spielberg depart the project. At last, the studio and Spielberg will collaborate, with Amblin producing The Lottery alongside The New Yorker Studios.

The basic premise for the film:

Quote

"The Lottery takes place in a quasi-dystopian rural America town, where every town citizen has their names up for draft in an annual lottery. However, the fate of the lottery's winner is absolutely shocking."

Usual Spielberg collaborators, such as cinematographer Janusz Kamińsky, composer John Williams and writer Tony Kushner, will all participate, with Spielberg producing and directing. No casting choices have been made yet, but everything hints at West Side Story sensation Ariana DeBose starring as the iconic character of Tessie Hutchinson. The Lottery has no current release date slated, but it is possible that it may be fast-tracked to a Y10 release, with a Y11 release at latest should the project not make the upcoming year.

Phoenix Fire Entertainment President and CEO Andrew Medley officially announces that, in Y10, starting with Beth McCarthy-Miller's MBWII: The Monster Bug Wars, Phoenix Fire will rebrand itself as Phoenix Fire Pictures. Medley commented with excitement that: "This is a step towards a greater focus on quality artistic, cinematic events for us, after the tremendous reception to some of our Y9 output, such as Ava DuVernay's American Spy, Jake Hammond's Acne, Alfonso Cuarón's Warmth and James Mangold's Runaway Train, and we are looking to continue to create magical cinema experiences, collaborating with a diverse array of off- and on-screen talent, and further our growth as an important name in the artistic landscape."

Some scheduling updates from Phoenix Fire Pictures in regards to Y10:

  • Taylor Sheridan (Wind River, Those Who Wish Me Dead, the upcoming Red Dead Redemption duology) will write and direct an original film for Phoenix Fire, titled The Legend of Hollis Brown. Starring Chris Pine and Lashana Lynch, it tells the story of a man named Hollis Brown who feels doomed to suffer a horrible fate, as foretold in the Bob Dylan song Ballad of Hollis Brown. The film will be released in February Y10;
  • Steve Moore (writer for Open Season and Alpha & Omega), who had originally been slated to direct an original film for Phoenix Fire Family Animation, will now take PFFA's Summer Y10 spot - previously reserved for the now backtracked Sackboy - and instead helm The Quest for Buster's Bones, an adaptation of the 90's family game Don't Take Buster's Bones, to be released in May Y10. Said to be inspired by classic cartoon characters such as Tom and Jerry, and Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner, it tells the story of a cat hellbent on stealing the bones of a dog named Buster. Ving Rhames will star as the dog Buster, while Andy Richter will portray the yet unnamed cat character;
  • Steven Spielberg's (Jaws, West Side Story, The Fabelmans, Fortnight) previously announced adaptation of Shirley Jackson's 1948 short story The Lottery, will be released on July Y10, and will indeed star Ariana DeBose as Tessie Hutchinson;
  • Phoenix Fire will release a TBD spooky animated film in September, the slot taken by this past year's Invader Zim (Owen Dennis), ahead of Halloween season. The choice lies between an original surrealist horror project from Robert Morgan (Bobby Yeah), or the family comedy animation The Spiritual Specialists, an adaptation of the short story 1-800-Spiritual-Specialists by Laura Pamenter, to be directed by Kristen Lester (Purl).
