WHEN THE SINNERS ARE THE SAINTS

An Exclusive Look At

THE EPSILON SYNDICATE

---UNION OF THIEVES---

Spoiler

"Back in Year 1, I saw an animated short film called "Diamond Jack", a joyously animated tale reminiscent of classic works of Anime, rambunctious crime capers, and the visual charm of an age bygone. It began to make me feel nostalgic for something I never got to fully experience, and I toyed around with ideas for it with director and writer Drew Goddard, who was a creative force that helped us a great deal in the early stages of our studio, even serving as executive producer for the Blood and Fur movies. Around the time that Spark: Beyond the Sky entered production, we were anxious to think about where to go next. Our flagpole original franchise was coming to an end, but we wanted to hand the baton to someone new. It was shortly after that where we realized we could make a world far unlike anything seen in the past few years." Hourglass Pictures CEO Michelle Haywood said.

A marriage of elements of cinema, society, and culture, both from years past and to this very day, The Epsilon Syndicate was born.

Goddard was happily appointed by Haywood to direct the first film in what is hopefully going to be another big journey, hereby subtitled Union of Thieves, but he felt conflicting forces on how to best design his vision. "The film was almost announced a bit prematurely, I admit," Goddard remarked. The film had undergone some casting and designer changes, but thankfully nothing on the level of Homeward. (Haywood declined to comment on it, only remarking that the final version did turn out better.) As the Comic Con trailer was finalizing its editing, however, Goddard became more and more convinced that he was gonna be proud of his final product.

But we are getting a tad ahead of ourselves. We should probably discuss what this world even is.

Within our own civilizations, so many hidden mini civilizations and societies function without us knowing. Your neighbor may know. Your sister may know. Nearly all world governments don't. And it takes a lot of effort to keep it that way. While not even in the underbellies of our world has malicious intent, it can create a hotbed of danger so undetectable and mysterious that could regardless shake the world to its core. What can one do when the secrets are too tightly kept?

The Epsilon Syndicate is here to help. A loosely formed organization with thousands across the globe, something of an urban legend even in underground communities, its members are master thieves, codebreakers, geniuses, diplomats, couriers, and assassins. Led by the mysterious Madame Y, the Syndicate vows itself for the side of good and justice, especially when they are failed out in the open. In their likely illegal pursuit of heroic work, they find that they have many enemies across the globe, and are in constant danger. But don't think for a millisecond that because the typical ES member lacks pure physical strength, that they won't be a forced to be reckoned with. As masterful battle technicians and weapons experts, you'd be shocked how doomed you would be.

Emily Blunt, Haley Lu Richardson, Letitia Wright, Ryan Potter, and Hari Nef play our five main protagonists.

Nadine Hallon (Haley Lu Richardson, Split, Columbus) didn't think the Syndicate was anything more than an urban legend, especially since she had problems of her own. Her parents were murdered when she was very young (like most heroes today, admittedly) and she's been bouncing through the Foster Care system for years. Desperate to attend Harvard University but without and viable funding for her degree, she begins resulting to illegal measures, particularly an underground gambling ring in her hometown. Through these games, we find out she's quite intelligent and would easily get in.

But alas, she gets busted, and may be one step away from Juvenile Hall. However, that is if Madame Y (Emily Blunt, Mary Poppins Returns, A Quiet Place) doesn't have anything to say about it, which she does. After an encounter of a selfless act she did at the ring, she targets Hallon as a potential new recruit for the Syndicate, placing her alongside a motley crew of heroes known only through their code names. Lyceus (Ryan Potter, Big Hero 6, American Dragon: Jake Long) was one of the most effective thieves in the eastern USA while Olympia (Letitia Wright, Black Panther, The Scavenger Wars) is a genius puzzle solver and code breaker. Beyond the two field agents, Piazza (Hari Nef, Assassination Nation) easily invents cutting edge technology to help the team.

"While Hallon, soon to become Gershwin, struggles to make her name on the team, she forms a close friendship with her new allies unlike anything she had known in her life before, and she finds new confidence to awaken a hero inside her she had never known." Haley Lu Richardson remarked on her character. "It's kind of amazing that this character without brute strength or superpowers or even a giant robot can find a way to be part of something bigger, and it isn't just her brains that get her through, but also her heart. She's gonna be a character that I hope a lot of audience members can empathize with.

With Elizabeth Banks as the villanous Jeanette Rhubarn, the cast is rounded out by John Oliver, Michael Keaton, Amy Sedaris, Janelle Monae, and Armand Assante.

But what will be her first nemesis? Jeanette Rhubarn, (Elizabeth Banks, Voltron, The Hunger Games) the owner of a megastore across the country, puts on a mask to make the world think she is a truly empathetic, lovable individual who cares about the world and its people. She almost seems like she really does...but once you find out how exactly she plans to execute her next business strategy, she'll raise some serious eyebrows. Banks remarked that Rhubarn won't be written like a typical "evil CEO villain", not in that she won't get to chew a bit of scenery, but there will be enough restraint and assurance to make people actually fall for her, even as they begin to find out what is really going on. "In order words, the most terrifying think about her evil-ness is that few people in power see it as such."

Also joining the cast are John Oliver as the voice OMNI, an artificial intelligence utilized by members of the Syndicate. Think something along the lines of Samantha from Her but with a lot more sass. Keaton and Sedaris play the adopted "surrogate" parents of the main Epsilon agents as they go on their missions, helping them build the facade of a normal life. Janelle Monae plays a mysterious crime lord with an agenda all her own, while Armand Assante takes on a role as the founding member of the titular syndicate.

Michael Giacchino is set to score the film, specifically chosen to draft off of his stylistic abilities.

Much like La La Land, the film will follow a retro styling in its stylish, exciting adventure, while Goddard is excited to remark that, instead of an IMAX or even 3D release, the film is getting a 70mm engagement in 250 theaters, from classic movie houses to converted multiplexes. The film's style will be inspired by films of the 50s and 60s, as well as modern fare like Kingsman and Baby Driver, and even animated films like The Castle of Cagliastro. While a fun and exciting time is promised, the film also isn't afraid to get emotional and honest in its commentary, and it's said to deal with themes on capitalism, the CIA, race, gender, and class head on. "There's a lot we're going to say here about the world we live in, and it isn't going to be all great. However, with this saga, we really want to focus on telling stories that are optimistic, hopeful, and simply a blast to watch unfold.

A unique new blockbuster unlike anything you've seen recently, we are pleased to release The Epsilon Syndicate: Union of Thieves on March 19th, Y5 in theaters and 70mm engagements.

Between Nef, Taylor-Klaus and Maines I for one welcome this new era of trans/genderqueer CAYOM stars.

  Reveal hidden contents

In the movie, her character will explicitly be Transgender, but I'm trying to give her a subplot that does her character and Transgender issues justice without making it the focal point of her arc.

I also considered Sam Levinson to direct it for a moment after I saw it. I may have him be a producer for now and set him up to do a sequel.

Blankments Productions Developing New Camera Rig for Secret Y6 Project

Blankments Productions is investing big money into the development of a completely new type of camera rig. The United States Patent Office has recently received patents for a new camera rig that would allow "use of split-diopter focus within the use of composited green screen without the loss of environmental elements within both aspects of the frame." The names attached to this, in addition to several camera technicians, include the Wachowski sisters and Edward Nadny, president of Blankments Productions. When asked for comment, Nadny stated, "We do not usually comment on unannounced upcoming projects, but I can confirm the in-house development for new technology for a film we are working on with the Wachowski sisters. Do not expect the tech to be complete in Year 5. We will make a full announcement at the start of production of the patent and other technological advances we are attempting with this unannounced project."

Endless Animation and Macy’s go all out for Thanksgiving as floats for their upcoming films in Y5, take to the skies in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. People will see giant floats of the main characters from the studios upcoming films, like Perci (Margot Robbie), an adorable yet somewhat of a control freak bilby  and Red (Hugh Jackman), a rebellious, tough as nails kangaroo from Larrikins (which arrives in theaters February 5th, Y5), Inspector Gadget (Charlie Day) and his niece Penny (MacKenzie Foy) and dog Brain from Inspector Gadget (arriving in theaters June 4th, Y5) and Squirrel Girl (Anna Kendrick) from The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl (arriving in theaters December 22nd Y5).

Ian Happs, head of domestic marketing for Endless Entertainment says the move was done to get a head start on the competition in Y5 as the animation field is looking competitive. “The early bird gets the worm.” says Happs “And we love to get a head start on that and are thankful for our friends at Macy’s.”
