Dunkirk has a crazy good looking cast

I'm not gonna lie, Collins (Jack Lowden) is extremely handsome and I'm mostly straight?

Just came out of Dunkirk!!! Amazing movie, Nolan deserves an BD nomination. Best of the year and right up there with his best movies!!! It definitely deserves multiple viewings to just soak in everything.

I think @Emperor Tele-Limai had pointed this out. When the real world is this crazy, people want pure escapism or uplifting things at the movies. It may also be part of the reason Wonder Woman is doing that well, pure heroism with no strings attached when the world is looking for it. Or why more "fun" movies are favored right now. People want to escape the real world in the movies, not see an extension of it. Political movies won't do well right now at all unless they are played as farce.

ahhh yes!  This is why Transcendence and Chappie failed IMO.  I was trying to theorize the box office from a social/psychological P.O.V. during this time and it seemed people were just not in the mood anymore after The Dark Knight and Inception popularized 'gloom' and woke up many people

If Dunkirk gets to 56.3M, it will be the #5 OW of Summer 2017. If it doesn't, then Apes will be #5, lowest opening weekend for Top 5 weekends of summer since 2006. What an awful awful summer movie season in the end.

If repeats are allowed, then the top OWs this summer will be

Guardians 2

SMH

Wonder Woman

DM3

Guardians second weekend

Pirates

Wonder Woman second weekend

Apes

Awards Watch isn't always reliable, but here's what a user had to say:

I guess being under embargo means I can't officially talk about the movie, but I guess in these forums it's ok? I saw it at a morning press screening on Monday. I will say this, the critics I've spoken to have been lukewarm about it. I thought it was a good movie but nowhere near the landmarks she's released the last 10 years. <would be considred spoilers under our policy? it's about the second act I think> It's palm sweat inducing stuff. Some of it does veer slightly towards "torture porn" territory. I can't complain though because there's some gripping moments in the film.

"What Oscar potential do you see for it? Low-tier BP nom with some techs? (editing and sound)"

To tell you the truth, not that much. The editing is great, for the most part, but the film has a length issue - 20 minutes could have easily been chopped to tell a tighter, more concisely driven story. Bigelow's directing is solid as usual, but she's done better work in the past. Mark Boal's screenplay is kind of all over the place. The acting is great, but <spoilers under our policy? Real event and all, but removing to be safe>. I spoke to a few Oscar pundits post-screening and none of them really saw any Oscar prospects in its horizon, I liked the film more than they did but I can't really see it being a player. In fact, in some instances, it felt like I was watching Rob Zombie's The Devils Rejects, a movie which I actually really like by the way, but which is the opposite of "oscar bait."

Honestly, I'm not feeling its box office will be good at all. Buzz isn't there, it's a long movie, and I don't think audiences want something that's hard to watch like this right now.

It is a great movie. Hopefully there is the Tom Hardy cut were it is 1 hour 40 minute verison of Tom Hardy and only Tom Hardy in Dunkirk.

The fact that Detroit has no reviews or even whispers at this point makes me think it's heading towards worse reception than we thought. Too bad IMO.

It has been screening for a while now, and quite a few of my colleagues have seen it. I hear good things about it. If you are speaking about critics, they are not saying anything because they have an embargo.

Yeah, if it's "torture porn" it's definitely not going to appeal to the audiences drawn to the "triumph of the spirit" racism movies.

And yet Homecoming is dropping like a rock, despite being "fun". And yet Dunkirk has few action set pieces, pace isn't that fast, it's dark and a bit depressing.

And also, the notion that summer is just for fun blockbusters needs to die in a fire. It's not true anymore.

At the end of the day, no matter how much we think we can assess trends and/or patterns, audiences will like whatever connects with them, regardless of what season, political climate, or social background is informing the movies. Wonder Woman 's and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 's smashing success seem to prove the whole "audiences want to see uplift and fun!" sentiment, yet SM:H's meh numbers and awful drops disprove it. Apes' mediocre tally seems to prove that dark-and-depressing is not good for the summer, yet Dunkirk comes in and disproves it. That's just the way things go.
