Joker | Oct 4 2019 | BE WARNED | ZERO TOLERANCE

Gerwig and Waller-Bridge purporting to be big fans of this movie is interesting. I get that it's a small industry and that if you're in it you pretty much have to play nice, but I didn't expect them to be that effusive.

All it needs is a CERTIFIED CINEMA stamp from Marty.

He already praised Joker (well, Phoenix's performance) and made clear that it isn't part of the theme park disease. It is a real movie, because Phillips was in complete control with only a few limits:

Quote

"There were two or three others we shot, one that is amazing in a bathtub, but I don't think we can actually include it in an R-rated movie and it's not because it was pornographic, it was just insane," according to Phillips.

I think he praised the whole movie, he called it "remarkable work" because of both "movie's energy" and Phoenix's perfomance.

Avatar technically reached 6 consecutively - however, only after being knocked off to number 2 by Alvin & the Chipmunks ~

Scorsese is clearly fond of Joker and considers it cinema if he was considering directing it himself for 4 years. I don’t know why people keep trying to figure out what Scorsese “actually” means when he makes his comments. He very clearly and specifically said what things he doesn’t consider cinema.

People are acting like you have to interpret what he means with his comments like he’s your senile grandfather in a nursing home. He’s arguably one of the greatest filmmakers ever who is still putting out amazing films to this day and at the age of 76 is probably sharper than most people ever were or will be.

This is not a reply to just comments here but a response to the discourse and comments I read in social media as a whole.

Wait, four years? I thought Todd Phillips pitched the movie in late 2016?

He did. I think there's a confusion about dates and Scorcese's role in it.

Interview with Phoenix and Phillips:

Quote

Looking back, Phoenix says now, he had felt blindsided by the controversy. Based on his own research into the type of people who commit assassinations and mass shootings, he feared that lending credence and media oxygen to the debate might do more to inspire some disturbed would-be killer to try to grab the limelight than a film about a fictional character ever would on its own.

Quote

“It’s not the box office but the reception that’s been vindicating,” Phillips says. “It’s the fact that I get emails from people telling me that the movie made them look at their sister who suffers from schizophrenia in a different light. Ultimately, the movie is about the power of kindness and the lack of empathy in the world, and the audience seems to have picked up on that. It’s amazing that a movie that was supposed to inspire, as they put it, mass mayhem really has just inspired a bunch of people dancing down staircases. I think that speaks more to our times than anything.”

Nope. Scorsese himself says he thought about the movie for 4 years.

Project was pitched in the second half of 2016, Phillips and Silver wrote the script in 2017, maybe Scorcese was offered any comic book movie and it somehow evolved into Joker years after, but his timeline doesn't make any sense otherwise. They started building DCEU in 2013, they were definitely not interested in making R-rated standalone flicks at the time, they wanted to compete with MCU.

Yeah. Joker definitely wouldn’t have been made if BvS and SS weren’t so poorly received. WB was really pushing the Snyderverse to be their next big franchise. They wouldn’t have risked confusing people with a stand-alone Joker origin movie at the time.

It doesn’t matter what you think the timeline is(with your limited knowledge of behind the scenes happenings). It’s what the man himself said about the movie.

And before audiences rejected DC’s darker toned movies WB was very keen to differentiate themselves from Marvel by going the dark route. Plus they were trying to recreate the success of Nolan’s trilogy at the time. It wasn’t until negative reactions that they tried to become Marvel lite. Now it seems they’ve ditched trying to replicate Marvel and just come out with good movies.

I mean you don't know what happened behind the scenes either :) I'm just saying that Phillips pitched the project and DC Black in 2016, if WB really offered Scorcese a comic book movie in 2013, it had nothing to do with this movie, and Scorcese would have never done or even considered DCEU style project, he even concluded his comments that he is just allergic to comic books as source material, even if the character is very grounded, and couldn't get over it.

What a pathetic post. From where comes an idea that their opinions are nothing but genuine. You presume to know better what they think or like then those women themself.

It's not even like this was some press conference or something like that and somebody ask them question, no, they spoke about the movie from their own initiative.

why wouldn't they be fans of a well-crafted movie had has something to say and is anchored by a GOAT performance? That's every director's dream. Ladies have good taste but we knew that already (Little Women, Fleabag). :)
