Sandberg too, even with the weak script for Annabelle 2 he showed a lot of promise. Re: Phillips, I have faith in him as long as the script for this is good

All three of these guys were usually the strongest part of the movies they made, James Wan in particular is far and away the best part of every film he directs to this day. They were all shown to be very competent before they took on something different, Todd Phillips has barely shown he knows how to pace a movie.

Anecdotal evidence, but I just got a text from my Mom that she thinks this looks good and wants to see it. Keep in mind, not only does she never text me about movie trailers (she doesn't do YouTube), but she hates superhero movies and is sick of seeing a new one get advertised every month (minus Black Panther, but that was because it was nominated for Best Picture). That means something.

I'm definitely in the 'however good marketing is this is still a Todd Phillips movie' camp. That's not necessarily bad for box office, but my quality expectations are rigidly in check.

Looking at 13m views on youtube with 500k likes in 24 hours.

I believe Aquaman had close to the same numbers. Not sure.

The Joker trailer also has 14.8m views on twitter with 316k likes and 140k retweets. Aquaman's first trailer on twitter had 5.12m views, 107k likes and 63k retweets.

The first Aquaman trailer on Youtube was posted on July 21, 2018. On July 23 at 00:14 it had 12.4m views and 372k likes.

I guess I'm somewhat confused about the Todd Phillips hate? Maybe I was just his target demo but...

Road Trip - Good movie?

Old School - Great movie. And I remember audiences loving this.

Hangover - Great (classic?!) movie

Starsky and Hutch - Good movie

Due Date - It was fine!

Hangover 2/3 - Meh

War Dogs - Seems like a decent film?

It's not like he has this terrible track record. And most of those films aren't straight up comedies. Due Date in particular has some very poignant moments.

His best movie is 100 minutes of "this is wacky, this is wacky, this is also wacky, oh here's who we were looking for, he was here all along and it had nothing to do with anything we just did". It's just a series of wacky comedy set pieces without a proper narrative and the wacky comedy set pieces aren't clever or that funny.

The Hangover has the same RT score as Captain Marvel. With a better average.

I guess that's the problem - I don't think any of those are good movies. I accept he (kind of) has his fans, though.

lol yeah and how well has his other directed efforts fared on RT? I don't like Captain Marvel but Hangover's "better average" you're talking about is literally 0.01 higher.

Old School adjusts to $114 mil

S&H to $128 mil

Hangover to $335!!! mil

DD to $114 mil

H2 to $285 mil

H3 to $121 mil (this was almost entirely due to audiences just getting burnt out on this trilogy)

He doesn't "kind of" have fans. Those are all huge successes. H3 had a huge, stupid $100 mil budget, H2 had an $80 mil budget. All the rest? $65 mil or under.

Fine? Pre-Hangover sequels he averaged right around 50%.
