The point isn't being 'politically correct' or not 'triggering idiots'.  The point is whether or not the film, for the lack of a better turn of phrase, "Takes the Joker's side".

That is, whatever he gets up to in this movie, the problem area would be if its portrayed sympathetically or 'understandably'.   Like, take that Tyler Durden comparison.  One of the 'faults' of Fight Club is that it didn't quite go far enough in saying "Tyler Durden is NOT a dude you should emulate".  At least for some.  Some folks actually watch Fight Club and go, "Well, Durden might have had a few screws loose, but he was on the right track."  Others even omit that first clause.

What some are worrying about is if the film does anything other than present the Joker's acts as BAD THINGS.

Like, and here I'm talking pure speculation and without any knowledge of alleged spoilers or leaks, making him a sympathetic character who snaps is one thing.  Hell, making him snap because people berating him or treating him like shit, whatever.

But the 'danger' for lack of a better word, is the film basically saying "Well, Joker went too far, but can you blame him?" when it comes to whatever vile deeds he may or may not commit in the film.

I think that is an honest concern that doesn't rely on being 'politically correct' or 'being triggered too easily'.

This lines up pretty well with the concerns Bob Chipman laid out a couple of weeks after the trailer dropped.

Didn’t MovieBob claim that alt-right people love DC films or some shit?

It's nothing but a waste of time and energy to worry about what this or any movie may or may not be before anyone has seen it.

Which is exactly why Drew McWeeny should’ve kept his mouth shut about having illegally obtained the script for the film.

Okay, just getting caught up on this.

Is all the worry not about whether the film is good or bad, but whether some "bad actors" will use the character and story as justification to shoot up some movie theater or some crap like that?

Drew McWeeny and these verified Twitter accounts have been pretty vague on whether the script is a structural mess, or if it’s simply the kind of movie that will appeal to alt-right crowd. In either case, I guess it’s worth pointing out that the script for this movie was apparently rewritten as filming went along, but there’s no telling if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.

Apparently the script going around is a draft from April 2018. I'm assuming the script has changed since then

If that’s true, Drew McWeeny is an even bigger jackass than I thought. Where’d you hear this?

The leaked plot sounds good. If one is realistic about this movie will be about and entail, it sounds good.

The joker isn't and never will be a hero, but that doesn't mean it won't be interesting.

Phillips' track record is indeed spotty at best but I dunno, I feel like Phoenix wouldn't have signed on for a project that was incel-flavored garbage. Or perhaps everybody really does need a nice paycheck every now and then. We'll find out in October, I guess.

But he only got $4.5 million!

Yeah but a youtuber made an 8 minute wikipedia entry video essay called "THE BIG PICTURE". HE MUST KNOW THE BIG PICTURE GOD DAMNIT.

You wanna know where I got these scars? My father... was... an ancap.. and a GAMER. And one night, he acts.. cringier than usual. Mommy takes the PS4 because he’s being bad. He doesn’t like that. Not. One. Bit. So, only watching, he roundhouse kicks her, laughing while he does it. Turns to me.. says.. “Why so CRINGY?!” Comes at me with the phone. “WHY SO CRINGY?!” Sticks the phone on my face. “Let’s put you on Reddit.”

Any time you make a movie that centers around a bad guy/villain, you are going to have to be VERY careful, or you obviously run the risk of making the character seem "sympathetic" and "relatable". I'd say most people are going to see him as the villain, but there will be people that are... unwell that will see him as "redeeming", and other people who have seen real people like Joker as grotesque and those people will write articles about how this movie is seen as a hero to those bad people. You really can't win when focusing on a villain, because SOMEONE is going to relate to him and like him. Charles Manson had a god damned cult!

What we're hoping for is a movie that doesn't inspire bad people to do bad things.

Also, McWeeny is a troll of the highest order. Take it from me. I know a troll when I see one.

Back when McWeeny did script reviews on AICN, the scripts he reviedwed were often first or early drafts and were vastly different from what we saw on the screen. Anybody who kows how films are made can tell you that scripts undergo huge changes from the draft that is greenlit.

McWeeny is a jerk, frankly, and not nearly as clever or witty as he thinks he is. But coming from the School of Harry Knowles that's what you would expect.

I suspect it will be like Marty Scorsese's films on crminals:It will make you understand what makes them tick, why they do what they do, but does not soften them or try to hide that they are despicable and what they do is evil. See "Goodfellas" or "Casino" as examples.
