This is Sony's third attempt at another MIB movie after MIB3 lost them money?

MIB3 lost them money because of the expensive talent and expensive back end deals.  It still made $624m WW.

I assume they're going on the belief that if the they got the budget down to $150m (with different talent) that the Brand could still bring in a profit assuming the WW numbers didn't drop more than 30%.

Wait, MIB3 lost thrm money, truly? That's weird and a bit sad, I actually liked that one better than the second to be honest, really worked for me.

Anyways yeah, this one seems doomed.

Some peoples (Smith, Lee Jones, Spielberg, etc..) made a lot of money out of MIB3, but Sony lost some, it did ok at the box office but under-performed on home video vs expectation.

Men in black 3

From Sony point of views

Total revenues: 515.13m

Net production cost: 245.9m

Participations bonus (to Will Smith and many others): 88.43m

Those bonus that started before profit turned the movie in an effectively 334m movie, with a movie that didn't double that budget (1.86x) while being foreign heavy.

Third party investor lost 20m on it, Sony around 28m (they were 41m in the red at the moment of the Sony leak but expected to do around 13m for the rest of the movie life)

624m is a lot, but was less than 30% domestic, the dvd market starting to decline and the movie underperfoming on home video made it make way less in revenue than what it did at the box office, that was not expected, Spider man 3 made comfortably more than a billion in revenues, Davinci Code made 833.6 on a 758m box office, etc....

Sony expected to break even at 175m domestic, 625m WW, but they expected 580 in revenue with that box office performance (just to show that even studio do not that precisely estimate break even point and you can still hear people being convinced they would know themselves).

Considering that the MIB2 did $441m WW with $190m domestic that was an extremely foolish expectation.

They still would have been fine with the WW number it got if not for the onerous back end deals that started before a realistic break even point.

I meant worldwide by international. That said they budgeted the movie to do 255 dbo/760m WW

I'm actually surprised MIB 3 made as much as it did. But it's also surprising the film

had a ridiculous budget like that that allowed it o wither barely profit or lose money

MIB 3's gross is great all things considered. Ridiculous they spent what they did on it.

This will replace Masters of the Universe to be SONY's big December release for next year.

That can work. Could be good counterprogamming to IX. I don’t think it’ll reach Jumanji levels but maybe $300M is the limit in that spot due to strong competition from Wicked
