Normally, a boycott becomes a forfeit, but I'm assuming their opponent boycotted, too?  I wonder if the NBA actually has rules in place for how any of this gets handled, especially b/c they are time-limited at Disney (and I'm sure the players don't want to stay any longer than needed to complete the playoffs)...

Should be an interesting 48 hours in the NBA upcoming...

This latest killing AND the killing of two protestors overnight is sending shockwaves throughout the NBA.

No idea where this is gonna go, but I won't be surprised one bit to see more boycotts, including joint boycotts.

From ESPN, from a player -

The dialogue is expected to continue between the Celtics and Raptors, with a resolution needed by 6:30 p.m. ET Thursday.

"It's an active discussion," Tatum said. "Obviously it started with the Raptors, and obviously that's who we're playing. It's been talked about with other guys on other teams. People are upset or angry, and we're just trying to come together and figure out a way how we can do something.

"Obviously people are going to say, 'Well, what is sitting out going to do?' Obviously if we sit out a game or the rest of the playoffs, we understand how big of an impact that will have. Everybody's going to have to talk about it, continue to raise awareness. We don't want to just keep playing and forget about what's going on in the outside world, because it's affecting us. It's affecting everybody.

"We're more than just basketball players. We're people. And we have these raw emotions and feelings."

This could collapse the NBA playoffs...I don't even know the financial repercussions that would bring, let alone trying to guess the societal and sport ones...

I was just going to comment on this, but I didn't want to quite put it my own words as I'm not the one hurting.

But chaos (in the NBA) and raw emotions was exactly how I was going to describe it.

Yes, I think the NBA playoffs are in serious trouble right now.  Best hope is for a delay while things get worked out.

As for larger ramifications?  No clue.  And I doubt many other folks really know, either.  Though I'm sure plenty will rush to the microphones and keyboards to tell us all exactly what will happen because of this.

But this is a powerful statement, make no mistake.  It's also undoubtedly an escalation. But powerful statements that are at all meaningful tend to be escalations (and vice versa).

No forfeits.

Good. 👍

It also puts off the financial impacts - forfeits would mean tv partners would need to be repaid for non-shown games...here, I assume, there must be a "make up game" clause (probably for Covid, but hopefully vague enough to not have to be), so this gives them time to decide stuff and put off major financial impacts...

I was wondering if this would happen. It’ll be interesting to see if there’s a ripple effect beyond the NBA and Brewers

Call it what it is a strike, not a boycott. Good for them.

It's not a strike though.

Look at the statement from the Brewers union rep today:

That's not really a strike.

Might be close to it, but I think it's different enough to draw a distinction.
