Death on the Nile | Feb 11, 2022 | Branagh returns as star/director/moustache model | Armie Hammer is sadly in this | Will release in China

The main characters are generally hot up-and-comers, which might be the intention given the nature of the plot (love triangle) - I find it a bit hard to believe that Branagh doesn't have contact with a wealth of  big-name luvvies who'd be more than happy to work with an ensemble for a month in London. That or the cost of recreating 1930s Egypt meant the cast budget was slashed.

It is what it is. I'm excited for Mackey, and I think Branagh and Gadot can do a lot more with Linnet (she's really annoying in both of the previous adaptations). I can't see this being a hit, though. It's going to be a repeat of the 1970s Poirot movies - big hit with MotOE and then a huge drop with DotN.

Honestly, all three of these are probably the most likely reasons. Branagh has always known how to keep a budget relatively low while still making the movie look lavish, a bit like a British/Irish Zemeckis in that regard.

Until we see something that proves otherwise, I'm betting the budget for this has not risen by much from MOTOE, if at all.

Given that the first one made $352 million on a $55 million budget, it would certainly shock me.

Of course, that doesn't mean they won't do it. lol.

It would definitely hit theaters if things were normal. Not sure this is one of those movies that would have people going to the theaters during COVID-19. Might actually do better on VOD.

If this ends up going to streaming that would make two of Branaugh's movies that will have missed theaters in the past year, thats crazy.

Yeah, but who knew he directed Artemis Fowl?  Not me, I just looked it up!!

Actually, Branagh's box office history as a Director has had its ups and downs.  2000's Love's Labour's Lost flopped, and Miramax canceled further planned Shakespeare film productions with him (including Macbeth!).

As You Like It in 2006 went straight to HBO in the US, and was only released in a few territories worldwide.  And The Magic Flute (2006) went straight-to-video in the US...seven years later!

All have worthy things in them and are worth checking out, but I'm just commenting on the brass tax of Branagh's box office... shuffling off Death on the Nile to VOD wouldn't exactly be unprecedented, unfortunately...

This is sure to end up going to next year when its target audience of older people will be a lot more safe going to public places like the movies again. Or maybe to Christmas in hopes of holiday legs though Disney/20th Century already have their hands full with Free Guy (even if it looks like a flop in waiting), West Side Story, and The Last Duel (which will likely end up going to 2021 anyway since it was only one month into shooting when everything shut down and has at least another two months of filming to go).

The score hasn't been recorded. You aren't getting 90+ people in a room to record for a long time. This will be delayed.

I'm sure Branagh would like it out asap after Artemis Fowl premieres in just over two weeks. 💀

From the new issue of Total Film:

QPa95zw.jpg

Q: “Have you been able to continue post-production work on Death on the Nile?”

BRANAGH: “We are. We managed to [complete filming] in December. And so by the time lockdown occurred, we had the cut we presented to the studio, ad we had a very successful screening for them. And since we’ve been in lockdown, we’ve been doing further work on it. So far, our work has been… although, affected by the remote nature of things, it’s carried on. So for what it’s worth in these unprecedented times, at least in our tiny little corner of the film world, we’re carrying on. And I’m excited about how it’s going, and we'll be on schedule. And if the world has returned to some form of normal, I would hope people can see it as planned in cinemas on 9 October.”

This is the prime example of a movie that needs to get delayed. 80% of its audience is gonna steer clear of movie theaters this year

Given how well it worked for this first one, I think this one should move to time when it would work as counter programming for a massive blockbuster.
