Plus Sweeney Todd was released before the ten best picture expansion.

My biggest worry is that audiences might be turned off by the "monster". But aside from the creature, and Shannon's "villain" character, there's not much else in it, that I would call up straight horror. It's actually quite lovely.

Yeah, that's what I mean. Being a "monster movie" might make it off-putting to the more "traditional" older/upscale crowds.

I don't see Darkest Hour going very high. What appeal is there to it other than watching Gary Oldman in near-cartoonish makeup make speeches in dusty rooms? It's one of the less interesting movies of the awards season and doesn't have the acclaim or the guaranteed presence in the Oscar race (aside from Oldman) to make up for it.

You could say the same thing about a slew of similar biopics (The Theory of Everything, The Imitation Game, etc.). It won't make as much as any of those movies, but I think it has enough juice to make more than, say, The Danish Girl or Jackie (both of which made sub-$15M) even if it ends up not really factoring into the race beyond Oldman.

Well it's not really a "monster movie" in the traditional sense, but I could see most moviegoers being fooled into thinking it is. That's what I'm actually happy that the marketing seems to be focused more on the main relationship, rather then selling it as a horror "creature feature" or something. Again I only really worry that audiences will find the main monster story as being off-putting and not go to the film as a result. Hope I'm wrong though.

Hope wonder, MOTOE and daddy home2 could all pass $100m

wonder proves that people are still in for heart-warming drama

MOTOE proves that people are still in for thriller drama

Daddy home 2 proves that RT don't always work when come to low score

All prove the dynamic of cinema going, all prove that market space is still available mid-budget drama!

Was trying to come up with my top 10 movies of the year and realized there's not even one movie I remember loving. The year got off on the wrong foot when I was dying to see Get Out...and that turned out to be one giant steaming pile of shit.

At least last year had The Witch, Arrival, Zootopia.
