God whatever happens I hope they don't mess with Avatar

We know Disney won't. They already worked with James Cameron in designing Avatar Land. Disney is completely invested in the Avatar franchise.

That also means Disney will likely want more longevity from that franchise than Cameron might want.

Granted, this may be compensated by spacing out the movies differently than Fox originally had planned, and alternate SW and Avatar every other year

 Yes that’s right!

I think the underperforming of Solo may compel Disney to treat the Avatar franchise with care and not rush things.

It definitely would give Disney another monster franchise, so they would be able to stop making Star Wars films every year. Star Wars needs to be able to breathe and Avatar would help with that.

This is official now. What a sad day for real movie fans.

Yes lots of people will lose their jobs: how many jobs lost will determine if Disney keeps Fox open or not. If it closes Fox and stuff I believe this will make it even more difficult for me and people like me to break into the industry. If it doesn't, how much independence will Fox have? Regardless people will lose their jobs and there will be less opportunity.

Fox Searchlight might be on the chopping block leaving independent producers with one less outlet making it more likely they'll have to go to Netflix to get a deal. Really bad news for indie films if that's the case.

Will Fox if it stays open be allowed to do non-franchise films? Or are we just getting even more franchise films and less big budget original movies? What a cluster fuck for many movie fans.

As for CBMs, if they merge the X-Men with the MCU I'm probably out. It makes no sense for the current MCU to have mutants all of a sudden: world is too established. Would need a reboot for the MCU.

Anyways this sucks for many reasons.

We just need to wait and see how it plays out. I'm not thrilled this is happening, but hey, what can any of us do? And all of the "blame" really belongs to Fox for selling in the first place.

Update:

- India gave its approval to the deal last month

- Oct 19 is the deadline for EU decision on the deal

- Apart from EU and India, China is the only major country left for approval. No idea when it will happen though

Also Comcasts bid for Sky was successful over that of Disney/Fox. This means Comcast will own 61% of Sky whereas Fox/Disney still owns 39%. Foxney is considering what to do with its 39% stake which is valued at 15 billion USD  Comcast wants it all. Foxney might consider selling its share directly to Comcast which would mean that Disney gets back 15b of what it paid for Fox. Hulu is also in play as Foxney might want Comcast to give up its share of Hulu. There are also lots of movie and character rights as well as theme park rights that Comcast/Universal has that Foxney might consider bargaining for

Disney-Fox Film Structure Coming Next: Alan Horn Atop Divisions, Streaming Big Priority

Basically the takeaway from this is that

- Alan Horn will retain his position atop the studio with everyone like kennedy and feige, etc still reporting to him

- Stacey Sneider who is the chief of 20th century fox is out after the deal

- Vice chairman of 20th century fox Emma Watts will stay and shepherd adult themed slate of films for Disney

-Fox 2000 will continue generating movies for Disney after the deal

- The fact that the reshuffle is happening means Disney-Fox are very confident that the deal will go through without any hiccup

- As mentioned earlier, decision on EU approval which is a biggie will come by October 19.

- rumours are going around that the deal will be finalized by November of this year (which seems a bit early) and that China approval (which is a pretty small thing and the deal will go through nonetheless) will come by Q1 of 2019.

Fox is such a renown and respected brad in the entertainment world for Disney to just dissolve it and terminate it. Is very intelligent that Disney keeps a Disney-Fox brand (as Disney-Pixar, Disney-Marvel, Disney-SW) for adult oriented movies.

Not 100% sure they will go for a Disney-Fox brand and not go pure Fox Searchlight / Fox 2000 / Century Fox, etc... for the adult product.

Did Disney name showed up back in the days in any ostensible way on the Touchstone brand release ?

It could be wise to not have Disney brand/name show up in any way if it is adult oriented, to not create any brand confusion. Keeping the century fox fanfanre do make a lot of sense.

Fox Will be Ready to Close Disney Deal Jan. 1, Says Peter Rice

Excerpts from the article

Fox will be logistically ready for its pending mega-deal with the Walt Disney Co. to close Jan. 1, top exec Peter Rice told employees Wednesday.

According to sources present in the meeting, Rice reiterated that the deal is still on track to close sometime in the first half of 2019, either in the first or second quarter. But he said that structure of New Fox — down to elements such as human resources and payroll — will be ready to go by Jan. 1. Regulatory processes will likely drag the ultimate closure beyond that date.

Disney's Fox Deal Gets European Union Clearance Subject to Divestments

Points from the article

- The deal is approved, granted that Disney comply with the conditions set forth

- Conditions being that Disney must divest its interest in channels it operates in EU namely History, H2, Crime and Investigation, Blaze and Lifetime channels

- These channels are controlled by A&E Television networks which is joint venture between Disney and Hearst

- Disney has agreed to the conditions and will divest from these channels but will remain a partner in A&E’s other ventures.

This was the big one after US approval. Disney will be very happy they got the clearance without much fuss.

There was also news a few days ago that China has also approved the deal without any conditions. Not sure how true that was.
