I really think this is one of those films that will be viewed so differently in 10 years time. Heck even next month... it's gonna be a proper long term developer.

Current ranking for me:

1) Empire Strikes Back

2) Return of the Jedi

3) A New Hope

4) Rogue One

5) Last Jedi

6) Force Awakens

*large gap*

7) Revenge of the Sith

8) Attack of the Clones

9) The Phantom Menace

There's something of a pattern there.

I also think it is going to age well and be viewed differently once people accept the changes. Especially if they are happy with where they lead.

B+ after first viewing but definitely seeing it again.

Only major issue I had was the casino scene which felt like it belonged in the prequels.

Will give my full thoughts after a second viewing but I really liked it and haven't stopped thinking about it's strongest points since seeing it last night. Was never expecting to see Yoda again and get another Luke/Yoda teaching moment.

That was the one story line that felt off the whole time I was watching it. It was just uneven feeling. Plus, the CGI on those horse like creatures when they were running through the city and casino wasn’t very good looking. I think they would have been better off just having them sneak onto the FO ship and attempt to take out the tracking thing using Rose’s mechanical know how and cutting about 10 minutes off the run time.

Yeah, this immediately brought back bad memories of Obi Wan riding that lizard in ROTS. I wish they had done something differently with these two or made the planet/environment more interesting or flashy. I have major issues with the plot of Valerian but I would have liked to see an area like the strip club portion (I forgot what the area was called). Like neon lit and busting with life.

I think even having stormtroopers would have made it feel less awkward...but I get why they didn't since it was supposed to be upper scale so they changed the uniforms.

This is exactly how I feel.

Although I do like the idea of a casino planet or port.

I saw it am conflicted the highs were high but the lows were low, wtf was the  casino scene did ryan feel the need to insert a really hamfisted political message ( I'm fine with politics and subtext but this was pretty blatant) but beyond that the story never seemed to click the entirety of Finn and Rose scenes were pointless. The jedi scenes were great but I didn't like the decisions they made with Luke. Overall the movie was fine I guess I wouldn't watch it again, just feeling disappointed the with story and that all the threads from seven were abandoned.

6.5/10 just disappointed

I definitely thought that this was a step down from The Force Awakens (this was always going to have a tough time recapturing the overwhelming feelings of nostalgia of that one). But consider me among the camp that's pretty happy with it for the most part. Rian Johnson has certainly taken the franchise in a direction that advances the characters with a intimate approach in this vast, fascinating universe, in particular the brewing conflict between Rey and Kylo that should culminate in an epic showdown. Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver are even better here than they were in The Force Awakens, especially Driver as we dig deeper into the past of Kylo Ren. Can't say I cared for the stuff that either Oscar Isaac or John Boyega were fed this time around (though I did enjoy the latter's interaction with Kelly Marie Tran), and I thought the talents of Laura Dern and Benecio del Toro were wasted for the most part. Mark Hamill springs back into action as the kind of quiet, haunted Luke Skywalker that one could've imagined he become a few decades later and kills it. And of course, there's Carrie Fisher, whose passing last year after making this lends unintended poignancy every time she's on screen (wtf was that scene where she was floating in space though). Both Leia, and she, will definitely be very much missed. I think this has potential to either go up or down in status whenever the final movie in this trilogy comes out in two years, but for now, this continues the Star Wars saga in a very positive manner that makes me excited for the grand finale. B+

30 years...and the wait is still on for a good SW film. Kinda new that Disney would screw it up, but had hopes after TFA which was average but was decent. Didn't expect it to go south from there.

For the previous two days I've had growing reservations and questions going around my head about what I thought about this. I'm very relieved to say I thought it was FANTASTIC second time around.

Everything that happens makes total sense (mostly) up to this point. Yes there a few things I would have done differently, including shortening the casino planet section, but this is an incredible character-driven blockbuster. I actually think that 'slow' middle act leading up to the Snoke scene is golden. Being able to relax a bit without the first show hype and focus more on the details the second time around really was beneficial for me.

I'd probably move this up to #4 on my SW list now, still behind the original three but not that far.

As the 8th film in the star wars franchise it has to walk a fine line between not straying too far from what star wars unique in the first place, but it also can't just go through the motions and repeat what the previous movies otherwise you end up with a movie like TFA. It is a very fine line to walk on and one I dont think disney is going to be successful with.

At this point i think its time for Star Wars to end, the movies are just never going to live up to the hype. A lot of these franchises have huge budgets but they fail to really do anything interesting with them. So much feels manufactured, instead of organic. First there was too much stupid disney/marvel humor in the movie. Some of the stuff with the porgs was fine, but leia making the joke about luke asking about her hair just flat out took me out of the movie.

Secondly Leia dying and then coming back to life was incredibly stupid, apparently she has the force? But it never really came up before and only comes up again later when luke says something to leia.

Thirdly I cannot believe that Disney would go out of their way to insinuate that Snoke was going to be the overarching enemy of the trilogy and then they just killed him off like he was nobody.

Of course I could keep going and on but i think the point has been made. Theres some good stuff like the performances and the music but considering what it could have I can't help but feel dissapointed. At this point I think that rogue one is the best star wars film that disney has made, but even that one had a lot of problems.

This will not go the way you think.

This is a fantastic un-Star Wars like Star Wars movie. The Acting, the score and the direction of the movie is awesome. This just throws out everything from a completely different angle than everyone imagined. Mark Hamill is superb.I love the aggressive Rey. Have to give props to the script which shows Kylo to be the real manipulator essentially proving Snoke's insults completely wrong. The Throne room fight is fabulous.

As far as some hardcore fans not liking it, I feel it hard for some who are invested in some characters for 40 years to have to lose them unexpectedly. I feel this will grow into a classic over time.

I’ve seen it 4x. It really does getter better each time. Loved the “Different point of view” callbacks to the original trilogy.

I guess this was a C.

I was never the biggest SW fan. But I was kind of excited to see this after TFA set the table for something that seemed interesting.

But Episode 8 apparantly thought it had to shit all over those expectations and obviously felt very clever doing so. One can do that, of course. But I don't see any reason to care anymore after it did. So loud and boring.

What a waste of money and possibility.

And:

too many bloody animals!

no sense for the right place for humour at all!

uselessly epic and loud music!

movie reaches its climax 40 minutes before the credits!

it does nothing with most of its characters!

that casino scene. As bad as anything in the prequels!

Yoda looks atrocious!

it comments on itself in the most hamfisted way!

I liked the amazing chemistry between Ridley and Driver... and Laura Dern's sacrifice is just a beautiful scene. Visuals were great. BB8 is the beat droid ever.

Having Rey not being the child of someone fancy and mirroring the "I am your father" moment is pretty great, though.

The last scene was nice. Set the hope for a better movie. Next time.

5/10
