Best Picture Predictions - 2018

A lot more people on AW have been reading the Dick Cheney script:

It's probably not winning picture and will probably have a decent amount of detractors

The main three (Bale/Adams/Carell) could all win

Adams has a supporting role but could be frauded into lead

Rockwell doesn't have a big role and isn't in much of the film; nothing in the script screams a nomination

Slightly spoilery blurb about Carell

  Hide contents

He has a big role in the first act but fades a bit until the ending. If Supporting Actor is tough this year, that may go against him

lol the whole pointing about Supporting Actor/Actress is that it's "supporting." There's plenty of awards in both categories that have gone to roles that are essentially for particular chunks of a movie and not the whole thing.

Like Anne Hathaway in Les Miserables!

The Favourite got slotted into the Thanksgiving slot, so I guess we now know what Searchlight's top priority will be.

And Focus also just made On the Basis of Sex their November release, which is when their #1 pushes have typically been released. I think if the movie and Felicity Jones get the raves, she's very much in (hell, maybe even the frontrunner...it's a really fantastic role for any actress to play).

If only another Star Wars actress with a baity role had a shot.

I'm skeptical of a Yorgos movie really being mainstream enough for the academy's taste

Maybe it's a Wes Anderson situation or a Guillermo del Toro situation where the style or niche eventually grows onto people? I'm sure Fox Searchlight knows what they're doing...

I mean Guillermo finally won his oscars by making the world's safest movie...

To be fair, both Dogtooth and The Lobster managed to get nominations, so it isn't completely unfamiliar ground to Academy members. Although maybe the Foreign Language and Screenplay branches of the Academy are more receptive to Lanthimos' films.

Now this is just my opinion, but I don't think, no matter how traditional the storytelling is, that a film about a janitor falling in love with a fish man is truly the safest movie in the world... something like Victoria & Abdul or The Post would probably be much safer.

You bring up a fair point. And of course we yet to know much about The Favourite but that was just my gut instinct

It's one of my most anticipated of the year

Fox didn't announce anything regarding AD Astra at CinemaCon, and most sites still have it opening on January 11 (that one Deadline article was the only place with the early December date, and it wasn't even the focus of the article). I don't think it's coming out this year.
