Shannon was great in The Shape of Water but he didn't make my ballot. There were easily more hate-worthy villains last year.

Italian American is great. Makes me wish he would make a movie based off his childhood in Little Italy, which I know he was interested in doing at one point. My favorite Scorsese documentary is probably The Last Waltz. Really fascinating stuff.

FYC: Why Richard Strickland should win Best Villain

 

While the category was recently talked about, I wanted to express why I think Richard Strickland (The Shape of Water) should win Best Villain.

 

First of all, we can tell that this villain is a violent, self-centered, and self-righteous man who is willing to do awful things to get what he wants. But there's more things wrong with him than that.

 

The character of Richard Strickland is known to be religious, making countless references to God and the Bible. But he is severely misrepresenting the faith as a whole; true followers of the Christian faith operate on love and peace; they do not use the fact that the are 'righteous' to bully others into submission. Strickland is a religious hypocrite and a false prophet; he takes many actions and makes many threats that a true man of faith would never choose to do. Strickland is a picture of a very real evil, and for that, the villain not only got my vote, but drove me to abstain from picking a runner-up. For a man who thinks of himself as close to God, yet remains far away from God, is a man who forgoes God's message for a message that the man himself would rather follow instead. That is why the very despicable caricature of Richard Strickland should hands down be the winner of Best Villain in my opinion.
