I saw Darkest Hour yesterday, and I must say, don't be surprised if it gets a few surprising nominations in the style of Bridge of Spies. Just because it's boring to 'see period films win all the time', or because people are going in wanting to hate it for that reason, doesn't mean the film isn't a very well-made and thoughtful film, and it doesn't mean the film won't resonate with the steak-and-potatoes audience that still appreciates the genre before writing it off as shameless Oscar bait.

USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage was shameless Oscar bait, and it was snubbed accordingly.

But Darkest Hour has a lot of inventive filmmaking decisions that voters are sure to take notice of. It's not a 'I'm gonna write it off immediately' kind of film.

So I'm not saying it'll 100% get a Best Picture nomination just yet. I'm saying that it shouldn't be counted out just yet, especially for many of the technical nominations. The chance is there.

This has to be the weirdest race I could ever recall since I started avidly following awards stuff beyond watching the Oscars and the Globes (around 2000-2001). A lot of stuff feels safe and yet, nothing really does. We're bound to get some surprises in the morning I'm thinking.

I think we're just gonna end up with 8 nominees (the consensus 8) in Best Picture at this point tbh.

Pretty much. Everything else has something big going against it:

The Big Sick: Missing all the foreign awards

Phantom Thread: There's a somewhat consistent presence and PTA has a fanbase, but the main guild snubs are too damning

Darkest Hour: Same deal as Phantom Thread without Joe Wright fans

The Florida Project: It's been getting NOTHING outside of Dafoe

Molly's Game: Chastain's SAG snub makes the film's overall support questionable, especially when Judi Dench of all people beat her

All the Money: Buzz came and went on this one with a low gross

Fingers crossed for I, Tonya, Shape Of Water, Get Out, The Disaster Artist, and Mudbound. Everything else kind of melds together into Meh.

Insane Surprises I Would Flip For:

- Dee Rees for Best Director over Nolan

- The Post gets shut out

- Tiffany Haddish for Best Supporting Actress

- Sebastian Stan nomination

- Richael Morrison for Best cinematography

- Coco for Best Original Screenplay

Serious Questions:

- Will the Franco expose topedo The Disaster Artist in the 11th Hour?

- Will the Netflix overcome “its a VOD” with Mudbound?

- Will Fox Searchlight abandon Shape Of Water for Three Billboards?

- Doubt it. The story dropped just two days before voting closed.

- Probably not. Adapted Screenplay should happen though based on how pathetic the category is.

- No.

I'm kinda getting a feeling Christopher Plummer will miss. All the Money in the World was something of a no1curr in the end (and isn't in contention for anything else), and would he have been nominated had he been in the film from the start (and no put in at 11th hour)?

No way in hell. And the Academy cares less about misconduct than the ordinary movie fan, and they're pretty indifferent to abuse.

We need a shakeup because the entire award season so far has been super predictable besides "This is Me" Winning best song at the Globes (Seriously, what?)
