Rewatched the first for the first time in years last night. Honestly, eh. Tony Scott is amazing but frankly he hadn't found his grove yet. It's more fun as a cheesy romance/buddy movie with a great soundtrack.

Still mega excited for this one.

There’s plenty of rock’n’roll fighter-pilot action in this movie, but weirdly none of the homoerotic tension that back in the day had guys queueing up at the Navy recruitment booths set up in cinema foyers. Weirder still, it is actually less progressive on gender issues than the original film, which did after all put a woman in charge:

But where, oh where, is the towel-round-the-waist, semi-nude locker-room intensity between the guys? The guys who compete with each other but need each other? Well, nowhere.

from a 6/10 review from the guardian

why are they like that

Powell plays the cocky Hangman perfectly, with shades of Val Kilmer’s Iceman in that, yeah, he can be a jerk, but he’s also not wrong. This will be a big movie for Glen Powell.

Glen Powell, grinning up a storm in his note-perfect turn as Iceman 2.0

start the oscar campaign.
