Top Gun Maverick | May 27, 2022 | Catch it in theaters...again on December 2nd! | Comes to Paramount+ on December 22!

Recommended Posts

80s franchise revivals have had it rough at the box office recently (Ghostbusters '16, Terminator sequels with Arnold) and the overseas prospects for this were probably always 50/50 (especially with no Cruise promo tours in the current global situation) so of all the delayed tentpoles that haven't already changed their release plans this one makes the most sense if they go that route and want to give Paramount+ something major out the gate.

would it be too expensive for another super bowl spot if release dates are still tentative ?

Never mind CBS is airing the game this year, spot is guaranteed

Pretty sure it was confirmed all studios will be sitting out on the Super Bowl this year (among other big name companies like Coke and Pepsi that are also not participating).

I would be surprised to see this premiere on Par+ after all the trouble Cruise went to the last few months....promoting Tenet in theaters, the rant...

Anything is possible in these times, as i don't think the virus will be under control by July. And it's gonna lose a big chunck of money in not only US (the main market), but OS too. The original Top Gun did very well OS, so this had potential in Europe and latin America

Some dude speculated this was going to be a Paramount+ exclusive due to a poster highlighting their February investor day. Poster looked like an airport hangar.

He's not wrong though. Struggling to think of any other reason why Paramount would have hangar doors as their poster for a Paramount Plus streaming announcement event.

Tom Cruise seems to be a theater purist so that could be a problem if Paramount wants this movie to shift to their Netflix competitor.

For the record, I think Quiet Place 2 seems far more likely to go that route since it looks a lot more like a typical horror movie than the first film. The budget's also low enough that they can still profit off of it.

It's not up to him. Par/Skydance/Tencent financed the movie. Anyway, if it goes to streaming there's talk about Paramount Plus.

Superbowl is simply not the huge thing in advertising it was a few years ago.

Some cynics say the reason is that the games have become more competitive, so it's no longer a case that the commericals are more interesting then the games themselves...

I think a lot of companies finally figured out that most people don't even know what product is being advertised in most of the SB ads.  Movie and beer ads are some of the few that you can actually name the product being sold.

This should be fine for July no doubt

I think it's a bad idea to release it so soon. Even if many people will be vaccinated by July, that doesn't mean they'll be comfortable going back to the theater. You still have to wear a mask and this movie's audience seem pretty against masks if you know what i mean
