I never said IW will top TFA simply because it has more trailer views. I was countering your point that IW doesnt have any momentum which is plain wrong. So my point still stands

I agree, to say that IW will top TFA would be implying there's a 100% perfect correlation between trailer views and box office, which no one claimed. But I think a positive correlation is definitely there, as we've observed many times with IT, Deadpool, Suicide Squad, TFA...  IW will do very well, youtube views is more of an indication of worldwide performance anyway since people of all countries watch these trailers.

Don't get me started on post Disney buyout toy wars featuring beeb8 and prog.

Even if you remove star wars:

Biggest non star wars domestic movie of the year:

2017: Beauty and the beast

2016: Finding dory

2015: Jurassic World

2014: American Sniper

2013: Catching Fire

Biggest non star wars worldwide movie of the year until the first SH:

2017 (4 movies): Beauty, Fate of the furious, Despicable me 3, Jumanji, SpiderMan

2016 (0 movies): Civil war

2015 (2 movies): Jurassic World, Furious 7, Ultron

2014 (2 movies): Transformer, Hobbit, Guardian of the galaxy

2013 (1 movies): Frozen, Iron Man 3

Would be curious to compare young adult, Dreamwork/Pixar 3D animation genre and Superheroes in the 2010 world box office.

Has big has superheroes is, kids fiction is still bigger domestic:

https://www.the-numbers.com/market/creative-type/Super-Hero

https://www.the-numbers.com/market/creative-type/Kids-Fiction

The theater being relevant only for giant event movies has some valid concern and the franchisation (in video game and movies and tv) also, but a superheroes only world seem a bit dramatic and out of nowhere, there was no SH movies in the world top 5 box office in 2017.

Annihilation and Game Night will also likely end up turning a profit.

I think netflix bought Annihilation foreign distribution rights for $50mil so it's probably already turned a profit for paramount.

OT: Anecdotal evidence is anecdotal but my theater sold out of 16 showings through 6:40 tonight already. The next 6 showings have sold anywhere from 10-30% of the theater with the last 3 showings being empty still. So ya....

The list of 2017 movies making 2.5 or more their rumored 15m or higher budget according to the-numbers.com, with some low budget success story a la Get Out, Split, Disaster Artist Happy death day and so on. Almost 9 non SH movie for each SH movie on that list.

Even adjusted, Panther still lands a top 5 second weekend. Absolutely incredible. Theaters should be personally thanking Coogler, Feige, and co for getting attendance up to these record levels, it wasn't looking that hot a month ago.

Spidey chilling at #4. The goat. Also goodness Shrek 2 was insane. $106m adjusted second weekend. Donkey's pop culture references. His power.

Huh.... I'd say it's a safe bet Disney will kick Avatar out of the top 10 later this year with IW.

Yea, but who cares?  Avatar had a different trajectory.  It had ridiculous legs, not a massive opening.

Why did SMHC have such a large 2nd week drop? I never understood that. It was a well liked movie I thought.

It played like a YA movie - indeed it had a large share of teens and young adults during the OW.
