Black Panther’s run is melting my brain. Definitely the Beast Incarnate of the year (pun fully intended).

To think that a few years ago some people were wondering if the character was viable at all (particularly on comic forums). Black Panther fans have really had it rough from fellow “fans” particularly in recent times because some dorks that have too much time on their hands constantly rail against minority led titles.

Worse still was the bullshit coming from some UK posters (whom I shall not name)that the movie wasn’t getting traction there at all. LOL..soccer fans would have noticed Jesse Lingard doing a Black Panther celebration when he scored the winner yesterday for Manchester United against Chelsea yesterday, that pretty much shows how much of a pop culture phenomenon the movie has become.

Not as culturally significant as TDK tho, was emphatically told that earlier in the thread

A $36.5M Sunday makes for a ~$113M weekend, and about a 44% drop from last weekend. Wowzers!

Many were making fun of BOM for their $120M weekend prediction, and yet they'll be closer than many people on these forums.

Peace,

Mike

Oh lordy...Grace Randolph implying BP is only "special" if it hits 2B at the global box office:winomg:

No, She Saïd that nowadays Many films hit 1 billion which hard to be very special. The 2 billion now is therefore the special milestone. She Saïd that in general. You should watch her video’s more closely

This fucking movie. I just can’t believe.  Box Office’s Mojo’s 120M prediction ended up being way closer than the “barely 100” predictions.   36.5 Sun is a 113M weekend, is a 36% drop from the pure FSS. Simply unreal, and a very good chance at DOM top 3 now.

2nd Update, Friday 1:03PM: Right now industry estimates have Black Panther at $92M, which reps a 54% decline and falls between the second weekend declines of The Avengers (-50% with $103M) and Avengers: Age of Ultron (-59%, $77.7M). By the end of the weekend on this pace, Black Panther will see a domestic running tally of $384M.

However, this is a movie that has continually defied expectations so we may see business grow by tonight. Remember, a bulk of the 18-24 crowd comes out for those 10PM or later shows, and Marvel movies get to this enormous size on repeat customers. Black Panther‘s second Friday is at $25M, -67% because opening day was padded by Thursday night previews.

Writethru after 3rd Update, Saturday AM: We knew earlier in the week that Black Panther would crack the century mark at the B.O. in its second weekend, and that’s exactly what it’s doing with a current industry 3-day estimate of $104.1M (-48%) after a $28.8M Friday. Don’t underestimate this Disney/Marvel release, it will only get bigger.

Quote

Update, Sunday AM: The Disney release posted $47.6M on Saturday, +66% which puts its second weekend at $108M, -46%.

And now we're at 113M. Black Panther pulling the up-and-up-and-up act two weeks in a row.

Percentage wise, I think second weekend outdid first weekend in increase from initial numbers.

Also this gives a 405 10-day to comfortably surpass JW on the fastest to 400 list.

Making a mere 2x this weekend going forward would be a  631 total to easily pass TLJ and TA (all unadjusted, of course). 700 only requires 2.61.

This could stand as the best second weekend for a comic book film for a really long time. The previous holder of that title, obviously, was The Avengers back in 2012. I'm not sure that Infinity War, even if it manages to open to, say, a gargantuan $240M, would top a second weekend of $113M.

Peace,

Mike
