Love, Simon is a very sweet film. Taking the tropes of modern coming-of-age films and applying them to an LGBT narrative, it feels fresh despite the many clichés to be found. More importantly, it’s just wonderful to see this story being told in a mainstream fashion, and possibly inspiring people to come out. The subplot deconstructing the heteronormative idea of what deserving a love story is incredibly fascinating, especially since the film puts forth the idea that everyone deserves a love story – but consensually from both people. We all deserve to find love, but becoming fixated on one person is a gross, gross mistake.

This subplot, along with the coming out story, creates a film that seems like we’ve seen it before, but in fact, is very fresh. The cast is excellent, with stand-outs being Robinson, Shipp, and Miller. Berlanti’s direction never really is incredible, but it works for the film. Overall, Love, Simon is a fine film that is long overdue, a teen dramedy for the LGBT youth that everyone can enjoy and will inspire kids to become confident in who they are despite what is viewed to be “normal”. B+
