I think that 25-30+ OW is pretty reachable. I mean, no, Elton is not quite as big a deal in America as Mercury/Queen or NWA, but he's still a pretty big deal on his own right. I feel like he's more iconic and well known than Johnny Cash, and Walk The Line opened to 22 million in November 2005, so I don't see Rocketman going below that in the Summer. This is going to be absolutely enormous in the UK, though. Possibly bigger than what Bohemian Rhapsody may turn out to be.

Elton is popular but Queen's popularity in the UK is on another level.

I think the fact it's not a typical biopic may help it and also they've confirmed it's going to be R rated.

Elton s life has been hugely affected by AIDS, plenty of his friends (and possibly lovers) got it.

And the guy was a very serious drug addict in the 70's, touring and recording like a mad man.

Elton s life has drama but not in an obvious way like Freddie.

Isn't Elton one of the biggest album sellers of all time in the UK? I imagine Queen's home country would be nuts for them, though, so maybe I exaggerated on that stance.

Ultimately, though, I do feel like this is looking up rather than down. I doubt it makes BR or Compton numbers, of course, but I wouldn't count out 80-100M DOM and 150-200M OS.

But these conversations only further piss me off about how All Eyez On Me (the Tupac biopic) turned out. That shit could have crushed 100M+ DOM in its sleep if it had been a good movie. Oh well, hopefully they'll do it decently somewhere down the line and maybe then it performs to its potential.

They totally botched Tupac's biopic.

I think Bohemian Rhapsody's performance is going to give Paramount the confidence they need to put their full force into the marketing campaign for this one. And thank goodness, too, because Taron Edgerton might need it if Robin Hood is as big of a flop as I think it might be.

well freddy died 27 years ago, are you...dumb?

Mercury lived his life as a caricature, Johns on-stage and off stage personas were separate.

Which is why Elton John is still alive.

I think the teaser trailer is wowing and uplifting.  I am not even a fan of Elton John but I am interested in seeing this.  That said, this movie needs to be promoted to stoke enough nostalgia for the era of the music for it to be a success (i.e. to appeal to the older crowds).

Seeing that list makes me wonder about a potential biopic of Madonna.

She has been such a major force in music and such a public, in-your-face, divisive artist...I am curious in regard to how a film about her life would do at the box office.

Wasn't there a highly acclaimed unproduced script about her life floating around Hollywood? What happened to that?

Probably got permanently shelved after she denounced the entire project when it was announced, especially when they wouldn’t have access to her hits (nor would anyone ever agree to play the role without getting her blessing). Don’t expect a Madonna biopic to be made while she’s still alive.

There were a couple of fun TV movies made about her in the ‘90s.
