Chile Box Office

Recommended Posts

Deadline:

  • Incredibles 2 stayed flat with just a 4% drop, compensating somewhat for the previous weekend drop. That's ~522K USD and should enter all-time top ten soon.
  • Ant-Man and the Wasp continues to have stellar holds for superhero standards with -36% and roughly 306K USD. Let's see if its able to not collapse after the end of Winter's Holidays.

Weekend Placements:

Again, no movement at all during the weekend. The top three repeated positions and Skyscraper landed at fourth place, over Ant-Man. That's a decent result, in line with what I expected, but likely to be well below distributor hopes because it has restrictions. Putting restrictions is very bold, honestly, don't know what they were expecting, this has Solo written all over it. Little Miss dolite was seventh.

Actuals from last weekend.

TW Movie Studio Weekend Gross Change Screens Change / Avg. Gross-to-Date Week
- Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation Sony $1,215,833 -0.8% 161 -6 $7,552 $3,518,417 2
- Skyscraper UPI $629,740 - 71 - $8,870 $777,709 1
- Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom UPI $535,551 -11.1% 69 -80 $7,762 $6,705,639 5
- Incredibles 2 Disney $532,073 -2.1% n/a - n/a $7,763,662 6
- Ant-Man and the Wasp Disney $261,414 -36.9% n/a - n/a $1,901,156 3
- The First Purge UPI $197,300 -24.1% 55 -4 $3,587 $1,148,430 3

Excellent holds across the board. Hotel Transylvania 3 stayed flat and had strong weekdays. Skyscraper surprised in second place with a very high average ticket price aided by restrictions. It's better than I expected and it's not bombing, but I still don't see the opening "restriction worthy", let's wait for the legs.

Jurassic World and Incredibles 2 held really well. JW:FK has outgrossed the first one and I2 has a steady pace to 9M+ USD. This movies along with HT3 still have this weekend left of Winter's Holidays for 75% of the market but should see more significant declines and probably a collapse the subsequent weekend.

Ant Man and the Wasp held well but it is being hit hard with showtimes loses. The First Purge on another hand is having superb holds and has outgrossed A Quiet Place.

This weekend releases: Mission Impossible : Fallout and Adrift.  Rogue Nation opened with 350K for a total tally of 962K but maybe this one can do better. Adrift likely to go unnoticed

Mission Impossible had a soso debuting at fifht-fourth place in admissions. Depending how close it came from the holdovers it may rank higher in gross. Still, it likely opened close to Roghe Nation 350k so it isn't that bad, but it's not going to breakout.

Some Deadline Bones:

  • Incredibles 2 dropped 26% for 393K USD, in line with expectations. Likely became the tenth highest grossing film of all time in USD and 9M USD should happen.
  • Ant-Man continues to hold well for its genre, easing 31% for 180K USD, but the end is near, will fall hard next weekend.

Actuals from last weekend.

TW Movie Studio Weekend Gross Change Screens Change / Avg. Gross-to-Date Week
- Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation Sony $868,600 -28.6% 145 -16 $5,990 $4,995,235 3

Beautifully, there are actuals for the whole top 7! Mission Impossible- Fallout had a decent debut, up 20% from Rogue Nation. The latter had a poor 2,77 multiplier which would give a total of 1,2 M USD. Is likely to have better legs since competition is lighter.

Hotel Transylvania 3 continues at the top but will start to fall really hard since Winter's Holidays are over. Still, should be able to reach at least 6M USD.

Incredibles 2 fell short by just 10k USD of entering the top 10 of all time in USD, but it will reach it next week. Being the second highest grossing Pixar film of all time is locked, should end close to 9M USD. JW:FK has a very impressive total with healthy growth from the first one.

Skyscraper continues to do very meh, and Ant-Man and the Wasp despite having very good legs for a superhero movie will likely end short of Doctor Strange's 2,5M USD.

This weekend releases: Cristopher Robin and Darkest Minds

This weekend was a roller coaster but Hotel Transylvania 3 retained the top spot, in admissions at least. Adult oriented holdovers rised as JW:FK and I2 fell hard due to Winter's Holidays hangover. That same effect explains the terrible result for Cristopher Robin which on Friday lost to Darkest Minds ... This would be doing much better with a decent release date, because I can't imagine a worse date to release a family movie than right after Winters Holidays.

The actuals on Thursday/Friday will be a bloodbath, and now we are entering the weakest period for the Chilean Box Office.

9 The First Purge UPI $59,849 -46.1% 28 -13 $2,137 $1,411,800 5

The drops are harsh but way softer than usual thanks to Children's Day last Sunday. Hotel Transylvania continues its steady pace to 6M USD. Fallout hold is far from amazing but is softer than Rogue Nation and is already close to surpassing it.

Jurassic World performance is low key excellent, very very good.

Incredibles 2 entered the top 10 of all time in gross but again missed by a hair a milestone, this time passing Toy Story 3. Again, next weekend. Cristopher Robin is awful, really awful, at least there is 0 competition looking forward but that didn't help Solo.

This weekend releases were: The Meg, who debuted at first (but we will never how much it does because WB never puts actuals) and Lo que de verdad importa, a Spanish movie that landed fifth, very surprising.

The Meg grabbed the top spot all the weekend, sadly, since is distributed by WB, we will never know how much it grossed, at least for a year. Or maybe... The weekly admission/lc data was "updated" and now is only two weeks behind the present. It is a horrible mess but with a lot of effort, you can get data. So, maybe it will start to get updated regularly again, or not. But anyway, someday we will know.

Holdover bussiness was a rollercoaster again but the numbers we are talking about (~100-200k probably) are hardly impressive, August to October is generally a very weak period and the only sure-hit is the Nun in September.

Lo que en verdad importa, a spanish movie which will donate all its gross to charity, had strong weekdays but faded hard on weekend proper.

The weekly admission data has finally been updated and now is up to date. I don't know how much it will last that way (From what I've been told at best until next year or 4 months...) but whatever, now I can have a proper weekly chart. This took a lot of work so forgive my half-assed title translations.

I'm still getting used to this numbers but from what I can tell 1 billion CLP is a good milestone, kinda like 100M USD domestic. (That's not the domestic -chile ratio but the top movies have a much higher % of the total gross here).

Also, the weekly data is missing around 100k admission of Coco's total run, that's a very small % not covered since Coco had 2,25 million admissions but will mean that the final number for all these movies will be a bit higher in the annual reports.

The Meg is missing at the top spot with god knows what gross. Every single holdover faced destruction at the hands of post-Winter's Holidays hangover and the drops were harder than expected. Incredibles 2 will miss 9M USD, Ant Man and the Wasp will miss Doctor Strange's 2,5M USD, Skyscraper will miss 2M USD... The silver lining is that HT3 held decently and now boast an excellent 6M USD. Oh, and MI: Fallout barely outgrossed Rogue Nation, but won't go much further.

This weekend there are several releases: Equalizer 2, God is not dead 3, local comedy ¿Como andamos por casa?, spanish horror movie El secreto de Marrowbone.

The Meg kept the first place and Equalizer 2 debuted at second. The Box office is so dead that the special functions for the tv special "Elvis 68: Comeback", were third... ¿Como andamos por Casa? bombed, landing below God is not dead which is honestly just embarrassing. The sad thing is that it still will probably outsell every single local movie from last year.

6.- ¿Como andamos por casa? Skyscraper Syscraper Skyscraper

After the initial Thursday madness thing returned to normal with Elvis disappearing and God is not dead 3 fading very quickly. The Meg continued on top and Equalizer fought for second place, but with what is likely a very modest cume. Holdovers numbers are so weak and ¿Como andamos por casa? has so many screens that this result is very disastrous.

The Meg had a huge opening week, about $1,2 M USD, 58% avobe Skyscraper and preventing the box office of falling in total despair. The more recents holdovers held decently but JW:FK and I2 continue to suffer from screen cuts and the end is near, but its totals are extremely impressive.

The other new releases were a mixed bag, though overall very weak. Lo que en verdad Importa did similar numbers to Adrift which means is targeting 40k admissions, not that terrible. On another hand, Luis and the Aliens opened to half of similar "small international studio" animated movie Two Tails,  tough to be fair that one opened in a severe drought of family movies, meanwhile Luis has to deal with HT3 and I2.

Also of note, Infinity War officially ended its run after 16 weeks. Final cume is 2.338.628 admission and a breathtaking 9 billion CLP in gross, utterly destroying previous gross records.

Another week ruled by the Meg which had a decent drop, nothing amazing but aided by the new releases' weakness. Hotel Transylvania was second but is running out of steam and will likely miss 1,3M admissions (tough it could get there when all is said and done, these are the figures of 96,5% of the market).

Equalizer 2 had a very bad debut. 31K admission is what Russian animated movie "Two Tales" did in April and no matter how much Chile loves animation, that's not the bar by which you want to be measured. Every other holdover fell hard because they gave a lot of screens to local bomb ¿Como andamos por casa? which boasted a pathetic 239 admissions per screen average. JW and I2 entered "end of run stage" and will be gone soon.

This week have several new releases, the most important are "Teen Titans go to the movies" and "Slender Man". TTGTM have a lot of showtimes and was second on OD so maybe it will be a little surprise. Slender-Man was third.

Another Week ruled by The Meg who has now grossed 2,4M USD and had a good hold aided by the lack of competition. Teen Titans had a decent debut, slightly (16%) higher than My Little Pony last year and could target 100k admission, a respectable milestone for a small movie. Its weekly gross was 244k USD.

Slender Man did very meh and will be soon destroyed by the Noon. The Syp who dumped Me did bad but not especially so compared with other comedy releases this year.

The strongest holdovers like HT3 and Equalizer 2 had better than expected drops. Hotel Transylvania 3 passed Coco as the fifth most-viewed movie of the calendar year and will indeed reach 20th place of all time list.

This week releases: Mamma Mia 2 (2nd on OD), Mile 22 (4th) and El Angel (8th)

According to Deadline, Mamma Mia debuted with 137k USD which is nothing amazing but far from being horrible. And while it will probably end second in gross, in admissions it could not top Teen Titans which appears to have held flat or with a very small drop, surprising.

The Nun opens today in Chile. The Conjuring Universe is a very successful horror franchise in Chile, and The Nun is going to be THE HIT of September. It sure to open north of 300k admission (all entries of the franchise have accomplished that with ease) and is very likely to surpass Anabelle Creation since that had its legs chopped by It, while the Nun has all September by itself.
