Chile Box Office

Recommended Posts

The Nun got a superb OD with 44.836 admissions, third best OD of the year and second best ever for horror after The Conjuring 2.

Nun is looking to 400k admission on opening week, around top 15th of all time. From there Anabelle's legs would get it to 1,1M tickets sold at the end of its run.

The meg is currently second on daily placements, while Alpha debuted at 3rd and Teen Titans stand on fourth.

TOP 5: Weekend from September 6th to 9th.

  1. The Nun
  2. The Meg
  3. Alpha
  4. Teen Titans Go to the movies
  5. Mamma Mia, here we go again!

No changes in placements over the weekend. The Nun obviously was huge but there are no numbers yet outside OD. The Meg managed to stay in second place and Alpha got a solid start for its genre. Teen Titans seems to be holding more like a normal animated flick than a small, low opening- movie (which usually gets crushed quickly) and could end with a surprising total.

Also, Happytime murders was also released this weekend but could not even scratch the top ten which is honestly amazing. It doesn't have that many screens but the bar for getting to the top 10 at least one day is really, really low. Just, wow.

The Happytime Murders was also a megaton bomb at our box office. It opened (the August 24th weekend) in 11th place with 1 277 admissions from 46 theaters - one of the absolute worst openings I can remember. Dropped a crazy 61.2% in its second weekend, and now in its 3rd weekend was already out of the top 20. Seems like a movie that is bombing massively everywhere.

Very strong holds across the board for everything that didn't bomb on its opening weekend (Looking at you Spy). The Meg continues to rule for its 4th and final week at the top. Lots of small new openers, the most destacable being Mama Mia which apparently was very frontloaded since it did like 83% of its weekly gross in the weekend (normal is 60%) but it didn't fell off a cliff this weekend (the one from September 6th to 9th) so it could have good legs for the scale of its opening. Weekly gross was 158K USD. In other holdover bussiness, Slender Man held really really well, very good for it since it is getting destroyed by the Nun this week.

Mile 22 really is nothing to write about, El Angel is decent considering the low screen count and Princess and the Dragon did badly in its limited release. Is yet another overseas animated flick that I think it hasn't been released in the US (I think I have counted like 8 this year), but hey, the fact we are getting it means that at least distributors are aware of the strength of animation here.

Speaking of animation, Teen Titans had a very good drop and has vastly outsold My Little Pony. Unless yet another overseas property inexplicably breaks out next week it will have virtually zero competition until Smallfoot at the end of September, so it has a chance to 200k and above all, passing Solo 167k admissions, wouldn't that be funny? It has grossed 491k USD.

Hotel Transylvania 3 passed 1,3M admissions and is now the 20th most attended movie of all time.

TOP 7: Weekend from September 13th to 16th.

  1. The Nun
  2. The Predator (new)
  3. The Meg
  4. Alpha
  5. Teen Titans Go to the movies
  6. Mamma Mia, here we go again!
  7. The Stolen Princess (new)

Again no change in placements during the weekend, this time for the whole top 7. The only novelty here is Predator at second place (very decent) and the ukranian animated release "the stolen princess"  which is also being released in other Latin American countries.

Anyway, Chile right now is on a 5 day extended holiday for Fiestas Patrias (independence day and national holidays), but this kind of holiday, like Christmas, has the effect of depressing the box office, since people are too busy expending time with family, friends, or getting drunk in fondas and ramadas

This will also mean that weekly data on admission will be available very late, not before Thursday for the week from September 5th to 12th.

Surprise! Someone got paid to work on holiday it seems. I'm not complaining. The Nun had a huge opening week of around 2M USD yet at the same time is kinda underwhelming. is below Anabelle 2: Creation and given that WOM is bad, it will likely struggle with holds though very light competition should help.

All other holdovers fell hard due the Nun with the exception of Teen Titans, which is now locked to outsell Solo , the animated flick has passed 600k USD :ph34r:The Meg crossed 2 Billion CLP milestone, or around 3,1M USD (For all Warner movies my estimates are the best you are going to get).

Alpha had a very good opening for the kind of movie it is. The rest of the top 10 is rather weak, and a Lion King Re-Release managed to get to 10th place. Very deep down on the list, on 19th place,  the new release Happy Time Murders barely attracted 1.138 people on 12 screens. Amazingly terrible, for comparison MI: Fallout managed 1.411 admissions from 6 screens on its seventh week.

New releases this weekend: The house with a clock in its walls ; Crazy Rich Asians ; Searching

The house with the clock debuted at second, but until getting last week actuals I can't tell if that is because it had a good result or because Predator was extra weak.

Searching was seventh and CRA bombed spectacularly at ninth, which is really, really bad. If it doesn't recover during the weekend it could have an under 10k admission opening week!

Also, I have stopped posting Mojo's USD actuals since this month the box office has been dominated by WB which doesn't report Chile's numbers and now Fox which does when it feels like doing it (and it didn't feel like it for Predator) I will probably post them again when Venom opens given that next week Smallfoot is almost guaranteed to win the weekend.

Top 6 Weekend from September, 20th to 23th.

  1. The Nun
  2. House with a clock in its walls
  3. The Predator
  4. The Meg
  5. Teen Titans go to the movies
  6. Alpha

There were some actuals released: The House grossed $231k USD. It's fine, much more than I expected. Interestingly enough, apparently the box office received a significant boost in the weekend. Alpha, for example, grossed 116k USD, up 31% from last weekend, despite being leapfrogged by Teen Titans which must have increased even more.

This was caused because last weekend was depressed due the holidays + many people took the whole week off

The previous week was late, was released today together with this one.

Soft drops all around thanks to post-Fiestas Patrias recovery (although that week itself was fairly good). The Nun is having nice holds considering WOM isn't really good and will likely pass previous Conjuring Universe entries, three-week cume is 3,969 M USD. The Predator opened decently and held strong. The House also had an ok opening.

The Meg is enjoying a strong late run and has grossed 3,493 M USD, very solid result.

Alpha crossed 100k admissions thanks to strong legs, but Teen Titans holds are just spectacular: second single-digit drop in a row, passed 200k tickets with ease and has outsold Solo by 26%, yay!  :P It has grossed 900k USD, making Chile one of its largest international markets, seventh biggest (something that AFAIK hasn't happened with any other Holywood movie, Coco was the closest I knew with Chile being the 11th largest OS market for it). Very smart release date by WB.

The new releases had mixed results, Searching is fairly ok considering it opened in just 25 screens but CRA is just a bomb (although 34 screens aren't that much either). The lion king re-release increased for second consecutive week and I'm positively surprised by its performance, spells well for next year remake.  I want to highlight The Wife, which was eleventh with 4,482 admissions from 12 screens and is having superb results on its limited release, very rare forms limited release to hold flat for three weeks.

This weekend has Cinema's Day on Sunday, so next week admissions will be inflated and gross deflated.

Warner Bros has achieved two months at the top of the Chilean Box office as Smallfoot displaces the Nun. This may or may not continue next weekend since I have no idea how Venom is going to perform. Another novelty is the good result of the Korean movie Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum which was 5th and 6th over the weekend.

Sunday was Cinema's day with tickets at $2,3 dollars and from what I could see it was very strong, Smallfoot being particularly ridiculous since it sold out every non-early morning showtime that I checked.

Venom debuted at the top with an excellent $998,672 USD.  This opening is higher than Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Thor Ragnarok, and every non-avenger phase 2 MCU movie. This ended the 2-month WB's stranglehold on the Box Office.

Meanwhile, A Simple Favor had a decent debut mostly on the 5th place over the weekend.

It appears that weekly data is going to be late again, I will post them as soon as they become available.

Venom had a good debut with almost 200k admissions. It has a floor of 500k admissions but could reach 700k with good WOM and little competition (it at least has the latter).

Smallfoot opened slightly lower than Storks (which also opened on Cinema's Day weekend) and held slightly worse. Right now is running at 92% of Storks and if it is able to sustain that ratio it will reach 470k admissions, second best for WB animation.

A Simple Favor opening is bad while all the other holdovers fell very hard because of cinema's day effect last week. The Nun will reach 1M admission soon and will be the second best entry of the Conjuring Universe after Conjuring 2

Venom held strong with a 38% drop and a $625,798 for the weekend, with a running total of $1,846,535. It is following GOTG2 so it should clear $3M USD and maybe more since there really isn't anything big opening until November besides maybe Halloween.

Goosebumps 2 and ASIB fought for the fourth spot over the weekend, Goosebumps 2 grossed $114,879 which honestly is very mediocre /outright bad (for both movies, since ASIB likely grossed around the same) considering they were wide releases.

After an unusually strong start of the month, October went back to its usual self: desolation at the box office. At least Sony and Universal are starting to displace WB movies so there at least some actuals to report.

Venom grossed $361,749, a drop of -43% for a $2,558,222 USD cume. The hold is bad considering that it has zero competition whatsoever. It is, however, a better hold than GotG2 and is now running 6% ahead. Continues on track to 3M USD and a little more.

Halloween debuted with $269,000 which is also bad but not terrible, more disappointing than anything. Peppermint was fourth and ASIB held nicely on fifth, though with tiny numbers. All those movies grossed at least more than 55k which what Goosebumps did on 6th place.

A quiet and very weak weekend. The local horror movie Contra el Demonio joined the long list of local flops this year. Despite having basically the widest release available for horror movies, it still debuted behind Smallfoot fifth weekend... Honestly, the fact that it took this long to get a local horror movie (despite being cheap to produce and a very popular genre in the country) and it ended up being a generic exorcist story that has been done a billion times by Hollywood illustrates perfectly why local films fare so badly at the box office.

The weekly data is late yet again and I have given up on getting them at regular intervals, I will just post them whenever they are published.

On another hand, the top movie this weekend likely grossed at most 250k USD (probably less) which is very very low. November is usually one of the worst months for the Box Office but I have faith in Fantastic Beast and Wreck-It Ralph 2 (also the combination of Bohemian Rhapsody + Nutcracker should be decent enough this next weekend)

It seems that the best way to get them is to bitch about it here. This week had a holiday, Encuentro de dos Mundos (encounter between two worlds), equivalent to Columbus Day in the U.S. That aided the holdovers, with Venom and Smallfoot even managing increases!

The number of admissions was up 26% from the same week last year.

Harsh drop everywhere after the holidays. This was one of the weakest weeks of the year, barely above 300k admissions overall. Despite that, it was up 8% from last year. Venom was still on the lead and has grossed $2,8M USD so far. Going on 122 (!!) screens, Halloween was clearly a disappointment with a weekly gross of $320k USD

Smallfoot crossed the billion pesos milestone with a running cume of $1,6M and The Nun is now the second best entry of the Conjuring Universe, passing both 1 million admissions and $5M USD,

This week was so soft that arthouse release Rolling to you made it to tenth place and the Harry Potter re-releases got eight place. The HP marathon doubled the Marvel 10th anniversary re-releases which bode well for Fantastic Beasts.

As a side note, Bohemian Rapsody previews are crazy, easily the highest I've seen since Infinity War. Considering this next weekend is a four day holiday it could open north of +1M USD
