There is no rapey scene in that film.  He brings her out of her shell.  She's shy and maybe has never been with a man before.  He says to her that he is going to kiss her and she doesn't have to kiss him back.  But she does kiss him back.  It's actually a beautiful scene and it marks the beginning of her awakening.

She tries to leave the house and he blocks her way and keeps his hand on the door to prevent her from getting out, and then when she won't kiss him he kisses even though she isn't into it.

Yes, he is the good guy in the movie so of course she starts liking it mid way through, but until that point it looked like false imprisonment followed by sexual assault to me, and was basically like a Harvey Weinstein story but with a good ending.

If someone learned about relationships from Rocky I could see how they would think that if she says no, just force yourself on her and she will come around.

A movie that makes me sob every single time!

"How happy is the blameless vestal's lot!  The world forgetting, by the world forgot, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind!  Each pray'r accepted and each wish resigned."

Top 5 Placements: 4

Top 25 Placements: 6

Previous Rankings: 2016 (38, -13), 2014 (63, +12), 2013 (60, +9), 2012 (46, -5)

Awards Count: Won 1 Oscar

Tomatometer: 93% (8.5 Avg Rating)

Box Office: 34.4m (50.7m Adjusted)

Synopsis: When their relationship turns sour, a young couple undergoes a medical procedure to have each other erased from their memories.

Critic Opinion: "It's rarely a compliment when I refer to an actor as "straitjacketed," but the straitjacketing of Jim Carrey is fiercely poignant. You see all that manic comic energy imprisoned in this ordinary man, with the anarchism peeking out and trying to find a way to express itself. And you know instantly what he sees in Winslet's Clementine, beyond her physical beauty: She's an overdramatizer, a blurter-out of inner truths. Winslet—who's as scorching here as she was in Iris (2001)—takes a character that could be too lah-di-dah in the Annie Hall mode and makes her chaotic, even violent. Everything that attracts Joel to her will one day drive him mad; yet a universe without Clementine will be a blue and cold and empty place.

The leads alone would make this movie, but the supporting cast enacts a parallel drama that adds dissonances and echoes all over the place. And I've never heard a score quite like Jon Brion's, which is weirder than his work on Punch-Drunk Love. A mixture of pop songs and chamber music, it seems to be carrying on a whimsical conversation of its own in a parallel universe, with hints of calliopes and silent horror movies. The music peaks in the scene in which Dunst recites the lines from Pope and Joel has a vision of himself and Clementine on the street amid a parade of circus elephants—an exhortation, perhaps, on behalf of memory. I thought Kaufman's Adaptation (2002) was wildly overrated, but it obviously did wonders for his confidence: He has the fearlessness now to move the boundary posts of romantic comedy. This is the best movie I've seen in a decade. For once it's no hyperbole to say, "Unforgettable!"" - David Edelstein

User Opinion: "As time goes on this movie seems to be even more timeless, a truly beautiful film. Jim Carrey & Kate Winslet put in arguably the best performances of their careers. That is saying a lot obviously. Gets better each time I sit down to watch it." - @GiantCALBears

"Holy fucking shit its great" - @Ethan Hunt

Commentary: I LOVE THIS MOVIE!  Okay, I'll get a bit more professional here.  Yeah, I was obviously hyping up the Mark Ruffalo film, not because I was anxious to get it out of the way, but because I was anxious to talk about one of my absolute favorites of all time.  I get emotional whenever I hear the minimalistic score begin to play, or if I hear anything to do with the word Montauk.  It's an absolutely gorgeous movie, and it features one of the greatest screenplays of all time by the absolutely masterful Kaufman, who has never written a script that was anything less of excellent, I wish people could get Pulitzers or something for movie screenplays (I guess an Oscar will do).  I was definitely sad to see this decrease a bit from last year, but I'm happy enough that it's still this well regarded and remembered.  Like Seven Samurai, Eternal Sunshine made it onto the list through mostly a select number of passion votes.  The film is brilliant and lovely, and I better stop talking before I start really just incoherently spitting out praise for the film.

You've been fucking with us a lot over the course of the countdown.

If you're lying to us this time, just remember:

Now that we're halfway through, expect me to up the ante.

There's definitely some big twists in this next half.

As for tomorrow there's one particular genre that hasn't shown up much yet that's going to show up in force for the next 10 movies.

Eternal Sunshine did not make my list.  It was, though, my absolute favorite movie as a teenager.  I haven't seen it in years.  I think it will go on the rewatch list.  (Once I finish Lawerence of Arabia.  Three days into it, and I still have an hour left.)

What The Eff?

This was written in 1976.  As a satire.

And now it plays as a horror film.

Aaron Sorkin only wishes he could ever.

ETA (because he posted while I was Network raging):

Prayer Circle for Romantic Comedies, but thanks to That List (TM Pending), I suspect the superhero onslaught's coming.
