I guess without having seen it it's difficult to know why critics are piling on this one above all of the other formulaic Marvel flicks. But it seems as if they tolerate the formula as long as the films are mostly snappy comedies. Because this is more serious they have less patience for it I guess?

I'm interested to find out why one of the few to have any style or personality is somehow worse than the others that stick to their bland house style of filmmaking.

What villain could they that could even match up to a guy who snapped away half of the universe?

Their next super big bad is Kang the conqueror (played by Jonathan Majors), he already appeared in the Loki show. It's publicly reported by the mass media that his next appearance is another version of him in Antman Quantumania. I'm not reading comics really often but the last time I saw Kang in the comic, he beheaded Thanos. I think the same thing will likely happen in the live-action films, a variant of Thanos shows up then Kang beheads him for fun.

Alot of the same people who tend to like (or give fresh ratings I suppose) MCU movies are the same ones gushing over Dune. I know people like to paint critics as zombies when its convenient but it's not quite true. Just maybe let me speculate they just...didn't like Eternals because it's a mess?* You've seen the Craig 007 films, consider the disparity of reactions between Casino Royale and Spectre. Same star, same company, same house style and yet one's much weaker than the other to say the least.

*=Granted some liked it while recognizing its messyness.

Very possible that this comes in the middle quintile or whatever for McU RT. Just a bit of an expectations disconnect I think, but hardly getting savaged (so far).

If that does happen (could see it go either way) it would be quite the comeback story after a lot of media headlines about how this has the "WORST reviews for Marvel!!!"

Though to your point about expectations, quite possible that the early reviews will lead to critics going in later seeing it with lower expectations, which would help.

Actually, mcu RT by quintile:

1st quintile — 66-77

2nd quintile — 79-83

middle — 85-90

4th — 90-92

5th — 92-96

this is even more absurd than I remembered. For Eternals I guess the goal is to dodge the bottom quartile or so?

The positive scenario here is to get into 2nd quintile in %, which is some solid company, though avg rating will likely end up lower than those.

I don't know what "messy" means. It's a lazy criticism, much like "too long."

That being said, I'm not defending the movie. I'm curious.

Also, Spectre rocks, and the Craig films don't have a house style. Sam Mendes' films look quite different from Casino Royale or Quantum.

And Dune rocks even harder. Do not compare them to the MCU which is mostly lacking in personality.
