No one is going to watch the Oscars. Lamest/least watched nominees ever. Any advertising would be just waste of resources.

This year Best Picture list is one of the best in their recent story, all the movies are good.

Yeah none of them are a big hit, but the quality is there. It will be the least watched Oscars like every other award show post pandemic, but not because of lack of good movies.

Because of the lack of appealing movies. People won't watch movies that are made for critics and awards only. It isn't lack of taste. It's simply that niche movies appeal only to their niche. And the rest doesn't care. I don't know why every time something is going to flop because it doesn't have wide appeal here's "but but it's so good" argument. Appeal and good/not good can overlap but aren't the same. Movies and stars from non-nominated movies that are among the nominees this year did not put buts in Netflix, etc seats. But you know what did? The Queen's Gambit, that limited series that's been sweeping all awards in its category and had record-breaking views for Netflix. So no, people watch tons of nominated serialized shit (The Crown, Mando, Bridgerton) but none of the movies had that kind of appeal because studios saved them for this year.

Well when you say it´s the lamest nominees ever is hard to not take as criticism of the quality of the movies too.

I get your point in the first time when you say it´s the least watched nominees ever, which obviously will impact on their audience, but since you also said it´s the lamest list ever, i respond.

I see, my bad. I meant lamest as in nobody but stuffy critics cared but it didn't come off right so you were correct to respond. :)

Really? This is the first year that I watched pretty much all award seasons movies prior to nominations being revealed and whilst I liked the majority of them, most didn't "blow me away" I guess. If this is a strong year then I don't even want to know what a weak year is, lol

@SpiderByte There's a chance what you said might actually happen

I looked and according to Adweek those three are the only ones being presented in that format, but I do think it's still possible. Shang-Chi coming so recently makes me think it's less likely though, but I do think if she wins we'll get a look at Eternals in some way by the end of May

It's releasing In November, probably a teaser with Black widow. Noting before that Ig. They have to promote Loki, BW and Shang Chi.

This simply is not true.

Promising Young Woman, Soul, and Ma Rainey are hardly only for stuffy critics. Neither is Mank, a Fincher film that thumbs its nose at Hollywood

Mank is probably the least accessible of the Best Picture nominees (maybe together with The Father), but Sound of Metal, Minari, Judas and the Black Messiah and The Trial of the Chicago 7 are pretty entertaining in my opinion. Those are definitely not movies that are only for critics. And I believe that Another Round and Soul, which won in other categories, can be watched and enjoyed by most people.

yes but doesn't Marvel have in-house action directors who take care of the wiz bang so to speak? I don't have an actual quote but some lady who was up for Black Widow said something about it. So basically indie director brings indie spirit to character scenes while in-house action staff blows the shit up or something.

Oscar-wining director were mostly specialise in making an amateur-artsy, their track record in smaller film doesn't mean a default success in commercial blockbuster. Just look at WTF ang lee did with Hulk and Gemini Man.

This

If anything seeing an oscar winner attempt a popcorn comic book blockbuster will just make me skeptical. Especially if that award was won in a year where most movies have been delayed. I guess i can only be pleasantly surprised

I honestly don't think that slapping "From the Oscar winner Chloe Zhao" will either help or hurt. Most people don't know who she is, haven't seen her small movies. This isn't From James Cameron/Christopher Nolan/Quentin Tarantino/Other Name Populist Director which can make a difference (and not always, Cameron producing Alita didn't help that one).

if anything, it's a nice tribute to her achievement and "critics, pay attention" if Marvel has Picture nomination aspirations for Eternals, but it isn't something that will put butts in seats, that's what Marvel brand does alone. Less than 10M watched her win.
