Is The Six Sense considered horror? that would easily be on my list if it is. as would Signs... not sure if that would be either though.

And what about Se7en? it was certinaly one of the scariest films I've ever seen.

The Sixth Sense is on everyone's lists so yep. Se7en definetely not. It's a classic thriller not horror.

Sixth Sense and Signs are eligible. I’ve gotten Se7en on one list, so add that in if you want bc I’m not making it ineligible this close to the deadline lol

Thinking some more about it and the original Godzilla from 1954 has to be one of the scariest films at the time of release. Japanese audiences saw Tokyo in flames less than a decade after the nukes were dropped in real life.

I guess because it's also sci-fi and the franchise turned campy over the decades, it becomes easy to forget how terrifying that original Godzilla film must have been at the time.

Deliverance is considered horror?   If so it would have been near the top of my list.  Also forgot about The Others & Interview With A Vampire.  Oh well.

It's totally horrific!  Oh, damn, I forgot about Interview with the Vampire too.  But that's cause I view it as a comedy LOLOL.

Interview with the Vampire is Jesus. I just watched it for the first time last night, and it'll be on my list.

okay, here's a list that I tried not to spend too much time on, but then spent too much time on it anyway

1. Jaws
2. The Shining
3. Alien
4. Near Dark
5. Evil Dead 2
6. Halloween
7. It Follows
8. The Thing
9. Evil Dead
10. Army of Darkness
11. Candyman
12. My Bloody Valentine
13. The Descent
14. You're Next
15. The Silence of the Lambs
16. Deathgasm
17. Phenomena
18. Sleepaway Camp
19. The Mist
20. Possession
21. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
22. The Devil's Rejects
23. Suspiria
24. Dawn of the Dead
25. Cabin in the Woods
26. The Exorcist
27. Night of the Living Dead
28. The Conjuring
29. Dead Alive/Braindead
30. A Nightmare on Elm St
31. The House of the Devil
32. Carrie
33. April Fools Day
34. Hellraiser
35. Poltergeist
36. The Serpent and the Rainbow
37. Train To Busan
38. Don't Breathe
39. The Innocents
40. It
41. The Beyond
42. The Bird with the Crystal Plummage
43. Psycho
44. An American Werewolf in London
45. Deep Red
46. The Cabinet of Dr Caligari
47. Bride of Frankenstein
48. Night of the Creeps
49. From Dusk Till Dawn
50. Event Horizon

And here's a small sampling of movies I wanted to put on the list but there aren't enough numbers on the abacus:

Nosferatu 1979
Phantasm
Sinister
The Witch
The Wolfman
Freaks
Halloween 3
Rosemary's Baby
The Omen
The Keep
Scream
Friday the 13th
Halloween 2
In the Mouth of Madness
Black Christmas
Interview with the Vampire
The Babadook
The Fog
The Fly
Wolf Creek
Seven?
Godzilla?
Split?
Signs?
The Sixth Sense?
Tremors?
What We Do in the Shadows?

(The ones at the end with question marks are more than good enough, but I kind of didn't want to put them on my list of "horror movies". All of those are easily better than lots that I listed in the top 50 though, just not "horror-y" in the purest sense.)

Yay,

are you just going to release the full list when you’re finished?

Nope, because where's the fun in that? ;) My plan is to reveal roughly five films per day and have the top 5 be revealed on Halloween. The exact number per day is subject to change

I have one thing to say about my list. I intentionally placed Hereditary and the other 2018 horrors in what I called the "third tier of five films", just outside my top ten, but if I weren't wanting to eliminate recency bias, Hereditary would be my number one film. See it if you haven't already.
