You have to remember that he was shot through the side through the cheek. In that example you gave that includes shots from the back or front which could sever the cervical spine.

Yeah that was one of the most likely to survive spot, as good as it get if you are shot in the face I would imagine. Risk of drowning in the blood and other complication obviously.

Sicario 2 starts of promising a shit show, and then it unravels on a few side elements and slow burns off them, then sputters out.  (Equalizer 2).

The scene when the Federal Police of Mexico double-cross the U.S. escort when the dirt started kicking up everywhere was confusing.

It was a heavily guarded scene to start with, and they just manage to infiltrate the Mexican police and army with infiltrated backup on the way???

I thought it had a badass ending.  The kid who shot Benicio del Toro in the face and escaped is shown 1 year later working in some American mall all tatted up, and Benicio tracks him down and tries to recruit him.  The music playing was like the Inception music that was humming during Assassins Creed, and that Assassins Creed music was playing here and humming in waves during the ending of Sicario.

The final take of an ending felt comparable to when Obi-Wan dropped off the twins at the end of Revenge of the Sith.

I read another review calling this a knockoff of the first and that occured to me while I was watching it... but it was still a really well made knockoff and damnit I was enjoying it up until the end. That ending was fucking stuuuupid. You can try and science-splain all day how that was plausible but whatever, that was just fuckin' dumb and the entire time I was watching Benicio del Toro flailing about that's all I was thinking, "THIS IS FUCKING DUMB". The worst thing is that actually would have been a great way for Alejandro to go out and totally in line with the bleak nature of these films. And then it tries to set up a sequel? Give me a fucking break, BOO. Still liked it for the most part up until then, and that convoy setpiece was great, as good as anything in the first.

"Adios."

Sicario: Day of the Soldado is a ridiculous sequel to the first film. It’s Sheridan’s first film that is about absolutely, while keeping the self-serious vibe that all of his works feature. The first half feels like it was written with a total unawareness of what has happened in the world politically since the first film. It gets better, but the first hour is really hard to get through without feeling uneasy about the messaging of the film. Moreover, the film makes the crucial misstep of not having a “good” character to play off of, ala Blunt and Kaluuya in the first film. A smart writer might be able to make the movie work with this, but instead Del Toro and Brolin’s characters are given more moral qualities to the point where it might as well be a totally different film.

Sollima’s direction is fine but it can’t overcome the vapid script. It’s cool to see Del Toro in an action movie, but the movie is only ever fun when it leans into how ludicrous the whole enterprise is. Deakins lost is sorely missed as this is one ugly movie in a very dull way. Sicario: Day of the Soldado works as an unaware parody of the first film and it should entertain most of the people who watch it. However, it’s a massive let-down from the first movie that never justifies a reason to exist. C
