8 out 10 of the Top 10 are Sequels.  Wow, is 2018 The Year of the Sequel?

I've been hearing every year being called "The Year of the Sequel" since beginning to follow box office/movie news 20 years ago.

This is true, though it's still a bit concerning we're getting top 5s and top 10s of pretty much all sequels for the first time ever lately.

Technically, of the top 10 domestic so far...

1. Black Panther - spin-off

2. Avengers IW - sequel

3. Incredibles 2 - sequel

4. JWFK - sequel

5. Deadpool 2 - sequel

6. Solo - spin-off

7. A Quiet Place - premier concept (yeah!:)

8. Ant Man and the Wasp - sequel

9. Ready Player One - premier concept (yeah!:)

10. Ocean's 8 - we'll call it a sequel vs a spin off:)

So, 6 sequels, 2 spin offs, and 2 premier...a little overweighted, but it's just as overweighted to supers as sequels:)...

Nobody can complain about sequels when original films are all but getting ignored.  There's exceptions, I know, but for the most part unless you have a sequel, your film is getting pushed aside.

I imagine a big proportion of people hanging out on a movie message board went to see a Shane Black, Del Toro, Laika, good reviewed JAmes Brook produced comedy in theater, you probably did, I did,... I get the saying that to the more casual, but on a movie message board ?

Those who didn't not are probably in the people celebrating sequel and the I only see Disney movies in theater.

Dunkirk last year was an original film and made over $500m WW so they can be successful and can get huge budgets but I think you need to have established yourself as a director to get those sorts of budgets.

It is also a chicken and egg situation. Studios are greedy and risk-averse, almost only sequels and "franchise" movies get a big budget these days (at least in live action).

Disagree. But don't have time to get into it right now.
