So can anybody tell me what happened that MoviePass suddenly went down the gutter? From what I can tell from reading comments here on BOT that it certainly helped in increasing footfalls of movies especially mid-level budget and indie flicks that people would go out and watch at discount rates.

Basically, they can’t afford to keep buying all those tickets at full price while only charging 9.99 a month. They’ve had to take out multiple loans just to cover the costs. Just this last Thursday the service went down because they couldn’t afford it lol. They had to take out a $5 million dollar loan.

Now they’re blocking access to seeing movies on opening weekend because it’ll cost them too much money.

The US cinema chains just need to do the same as Cineworld here in the U.K., have their own Unlimited pass.

Cineworld have been doing it successfully for 12 years without any problems.

Catch up.

(Odeon also joined in about 18 months ago).

That's what happens when these VCs (Venture Capital) smell the blood of an internet-based business model.

Here in China, you get a discount whenever you want to book a movie ticket using mobile phone apps. Basically the app companies lose money on every ticket they sell. The interesting part of this story is that this business has been going on for 5-6 years, and it looks like the game will continue for quite a while because the two biggest VCs (Alibaba and Tencent, who are also the two biggest internet-based companies in China) joined the game about 3 years ago, and these two have too much money.

As a result of that, right now about 90% of all movie tickets in China are sold online. That's also one of the key factors to China's crazy movie market growth in the last 5-6 years. In this case, it's safe to say that there're definitely some bubbles in the market.

9.99 per month is a totally unreasonable price.  Around $20 probably would be okay.  You pay less if you want to see more than 2 movies per month.

It costs me £13 for one ticket to one film...

These subscription plans will never work unless they give real unlimited access to the user. Theater chains are handing a lot of money to Netflix. Netflix last reported 57 million subscribers in the US, that's close to $7 billion a year, to watch old movies. Domestic box office was $11 billion in 2017. Can't wait for Netflix to beat it.

Mama Mia down 57%...and less than Deadline's Saturday estimate...

In fact, everything seems to be coming in under...I guess we see some of that Moviepass effect (since they also went down for a time Saturday night)...

Fuck moviepass. Last week we went to see that shitty Eighth Grade movie and because that particular showtime was in a "premium" auditorium (reclining seats) we coudln't use MP. So 2 tickets cost $36. Which would have been fine if the movie hadn't been some bratty little **** whining and showing her dad attitude for a full 90 minutes.
