Deadline's saying sub-$10M production cost with primarily digital/social marketing. 

This seems reasonable considering it’s A24. Its 5 day will probably be about $10m.

I saw Midsommar yesterday with my wife, and we both really enjoyed it.

 

It's a long movie, about 2:20 minutes, but doesn't feel it as the tension builds throughout. Well-acted and paced, it's the best horror movie I've seen since at least that movie about the monsters that come for you if you make a noise, and I see a LOT of horror films.

 

Recommended .... B+

Ari Aster's haters didn't watch this movie. Whoever hated Hereditary, didn't come back for Midsommar.

 

Marketing was on point and clear with Midsommar. From the director of Hereditary quote and the fact that the trailer clearly gave the idea the movie would be weird.

Boy I loved this movie so much. Best of the year for me.

 

I think that everyone who liked Hereditary will like it, and the vast majority of people who hated Hereditary will dislike it.

 

I do think there will be a small subsection of converts due to more obvious tonal consistency and the fact that the marketing was a clearer promise of the film.

 

I know that by mainstream sensibilities this might be 'weird', but frankly this was waaaay less 'weird' than I was anticipating. Not sure what people are really riffing off here.

 

As for disturbing. Deeply, deeply disturbing. And also absolutely joyful and uplifting. Closer to The Witch than Hereditary, actually.

Man... This was rough. Looks great. Attention to detail incredible. Disturbing, gruesome images great. Actual movie work as a wry comedy which is certainly intentional but just a slog. Should've been 90 minutes.

I was going to pass on this movie, but saw the trailer for it over the weekend and became interested.

However, I thought "Hereditary" was god awful, and I'm so glad I saw it on either a free ticket or on $5 Tuesdays.

 

If I didn't like "Hereditary," will I like this?

I'm as anti-elitism as anyone, but this movie isn't just for elitists. It's a genuine horror film nuanced than your typical teenage Friday night horror slasher like Happy Death Day or something (nothing against those either - I'm a horror fanatic so I go see almost all of them). There's nothing wrong with movies that don't just appeal to the lowest common denominator either.

Why are you so hell-bent on hating this film? It's not like it's a big popular film that's going to make more money than your favourite movie or impact big studio films in away way, so why not just let people who want to see it enjoy it?

That's what makes me so curious about Aster's movies.

 

The people who hate them really, truly, viscerally hate them for reasons that seem utterly beyond comprehension.

 

They are superb movies that are thematically rich, complex, disturbing, and fairly watertight. Pretty much everything horror should be.

 

If you don't appreciate them, or dislike them, or find them a bit slow, fine. But don't pretend they don't hang together, or don't make sense or are poorly made because....well they just so self-evidently aren't.

PS: I'm not one to correct people's spelling online, but if you're going to try to look like an intellectual and use a word like bourgeois - especially if you put it in inverted commas the first time as though you're introducing it to us and you think we're a bunch of illiterates who've never come across the term, maybe don't spell it two different ways. 

 

What is 'fucked up' to you? 

 

Because surely showing death and violence with dismissiveness and low stakes is more 'fucked up' than a film that treats death and violence as a very serious, high stakes enterprise. 

Which makes James Bond, superhero movies and The Incredibles much more 'fucked up' than a movie like Midsommar.

 

Surely treating characters as avatars to be offed with impunity is more 'fucked up' than a film that treats characters as real responding humans who are capable of worry, suffering and human frailty.

Which makes any rote horror movie, slasher film or fantasy more 'fucked up' than a movie like Midsommar.

 

The thing is in the seeds of what you are saying has some truth - people in violent societies don't seek out horror or violent films and visceral films are associated with driving affect in viewers and is the primary reason for watching horror, comedy or erotica. But you just mush it into some irrelevant broad package to bung against this specific excellent film when it could just as easily, in fact more easily be applied to Child's Play or even something like Venom or Mission Impossible.
