That's the thing about your core Horror fans. They are incredibly loyal to the genre. Even if they strongly suspect a film will stink, they will still go to see it. If you keep the budget low enough..which Blumhouse does, you are almost guaranteed a profit. BLack Christmas made 18 Million, which is horrible until you remembere it only cost Five Million. Blumhouse will make a couple of million off of it.

There whole strategy is release lot of low budget movies with a guaranteed core  audience, and they almost all will break even, and enough will generate a modest profit to make you company a success. And when, as happens a couple of times a year, one breaks through beyond the core audience, that is where you make you major profits.

Happy Death Day 2U did 64 million on an 18 Million dollar budget.Blumhouse made a decent profit for investment on it.

Black Christmas did 18 Million on a five Million dollar budget. Decent return on investment.

I see the whole relation between budget and profits goes over your head.

Blumhouse does no depend on big blockbusters. They depend on releasing a whole bunch of low budget films that make a modest profit rather then a couple of big films doing huge amounts of money. They don't follow the usual studio pattern of business.

And Fantasy Island making 25 to 28 Million on a 7 Million budget would be a good return on investment for Blumhouse. Sure, they would rather have it break out like Truth Or Dare or the first Happy Death Day, but Blumhouse depends on many movies making a modest profit then a few movies making a big profit.

Don’t they spend a ton on the release and marketing? I recall reading they spend about $30 on that. If Happy Death Day 2U was such a hit, why they cancel part 3?

Probably because the drop told  them they had taken the franchise about as far they could go,and decided not to push their luck.

Look, I am not a fan of Blumhouse as far as their films goes. They bring out way too much crap. It seems to be one good film and four crappy ones.

But it has been a successful business model. It's all based on horror film fans being incredibly generous when it comes to horror films and going even if they think it is going to stink. Horror fans have a huge tolerance for crap.

you're a broken record. HDD2 flopped because it did half of the first. not EVERYTHING is related to the budget. just because it doesnt lose money doesnt mean it cant flop

 

the fact that they went from doing HDD/TOD numbers to HDD2/FI means they ARE suffering already

Even though @dudalb is right about Blumhouse's business model, it sucks that they're all about quantity and not quality. Blumhouse used to mean you were in for a good horror experience. They were the cream of the crop for the genre. Now it seems like we get a few good ones from every studio, but WB seems to be the best, especially when they've got The Conjuring universe going for them.

Yeah, they're slipping a bit too. The genre in general is slipping compared to the last several years. I still think they've earned the benefit of the doubt.

 

At the end of the day, even if all studios start making garbage in the horror genre, at least the Conjuring films are the most bankable. There's a brand there that is bigger than Blumhouse at this point.

BH moves are usually quite American-oriented, while TCU is an OS beast. The Nun did more across the whole LA than TROS, per example, same goes for Asia outside of Japan.

People here are acting like it's the first time that BH struggles to get their shit together. They only became a 'respectable' studio back in 2017, during the whole 2013/2016 they kept producing trash after trash. As long they get one movie right, people will show up.

 

Plus, Invisible Man is coming and it's breaking out big.

I saw it. It's watchable but stupid. I thought Michael Pena was absolutely horrible here. The "twist" was also not good although one scene earlier in regards to it was intriguing.

For all of this movie's issues - and I haven't seen it, so I can't comment - at least it has Lucy Hale looking really fucking hot. Maybe the hottest she's ever looked.
