Academy Awards adding a "Best Popular Film" category. Good or bad idea? Academy walks it back, won't be presented this year

What if a movie is meant to be a blockbuster on paper, but fails at the BO?  Something like Edge of tomorrow for example. great popular movie, but a BO flop

I reckon there’ll be a box office requirement.

If they’re really going to do this category than the bar should be set at 150m or something like that.

Im curious on how they’ll judge that though?  Consider a movie like American Sniper, it was a popular movie but it wouldn’t have made its BO in time to count for the category.

Since the most recent oscars was the lowest rated ever... by a lot I was kinda expecting something to be announced but this is... dumb. Will eligibility be determined by box office? 200 domestic puts you on the short list or is it just any big budget studio movie?

Won't the popular film already be rewarded with box office. No new cateogry needed for that. A film with big bo can win Best Picture if it's percieved as great by the Academy, but no need to honor on that can't win the award with 'Popular' tag. The bo already proves that. Maybe they think it will increase the viewership.

Meanwhile, two of those were seen as major BP contenders anyways while the rest all had shots at tech noms.

It’s almost like this is a dumb, pointless category!

I will laugh my fucking ass off if 4/5 movies here end up being FM, BP, A Star Is Born, and Widows. Then it'll look REALLY fucking dumb.

It has to be a some sort of box office # as the eligibility requirement, right? Only positive is the fun we'll have mocking studios fudging to get their well-received tentpoles to the cutoff.

That means Solo is in contention even though it was widely viewed as a bomb lmao.
