Academy Awards adding a "Best Popular Film" category. Good or bad idea? Academy walks it back, won't be presented this year

I guess Black Panther will def get an Oscar this year. But seriously, this is beyond dumb. Gives them an excuse to not consider great mainstream-friendly films for the higher Oscar categories.

Also, cutting back on the categories being presented in tech fields during the ceremony seems more than a little insulting towards those who work in those fields. We all know it really goes back to "you're not famous enough to get airtime like actors, performers, directors, etc."

 

If they're really worried about going too long, perhaps cut out all the boring shit nobody actually cares about like the 10,000 montages we get inundated with each year? Food for thought.

I still can’t get over their montages that includes mostly movies they didn’t nominate.

This might open up a can of worms for Best Director. If Blockbusters have their own category, then what makes what the director's for the "smaller" films better? Could anyone nominated out-direct the Russo Bros, Christopher McQuarrie, Ryan Coogler this year? 

 

There's an argument that any "Oscar" nominated director's couldn't do what thry did.

That's a thought I had after hearing the news. If First Man is a breakout hit, does that constitue as a "Popular Film" or "Best Picture"? I could see a lot of argument and confusion over what is and isn't.
