Academy Awards adding a "Best Popular Film" category. Good or bad idea? Academy walks it back, won't be presented this year

Recommended Posts

I like that they don't even call it "Best Blockbuster Movie" which would make a hell of a lot more sense than "Most Popular Movie." For instance, mother! was one of the biggest flops of last year yet was a much more talked about movie than numerous films that made infinitely more money, so who's to say it couldn't have competed based on impact alone?

This cheapens the award show. Why not just have this be an award voted on by people online somehow and not the academy and give the awards during the preshow.

Why do that when you can cut out people in tech categories achieving the highest honor their careers?

What’s funny is the Popular Film category could end up having better movies in it than the actual Best Picture cat

Imagine, a world where Sci-Fi, Horror, Comedy, all get a chance of actually winning an Oscar.

Pretty much it’s a “Favorite movie over x DOM/WW” award.  I’d reckon it’ll be a 150m cut-off (potentially even 100m)

Other years would have looked something like this

2017

1. Get Out

2. Dunkirk

3. Star Wars: The Last Jedi

4. Logan

5. Wonder Woman

2016

1. La La Land

2. Hidden Figures

3. Zootopia

4. Deadpool

5. Rogue One

2015

1. Mad Max: Fury Road

2. The Martian

3. Star Wars: The Force Awakens

4. Inside Out

5. Straight Outta Compton

Imagine if they had this award when Titanic and Return of the King were nominated.

They will go by Rotten Tomatoes audience score. Obviously it's the only way to decide what is popular.

What a shitshow. if they are going through with this moronic idea, "popular film" has to be above 200m domestic gross. If they do it above 100, you can probably pick five films from the normal Best Picture lineup! First Man, Black Kkklansman, Widows, A Star Is Born, and Cheney could all do 100m AND get Best Picture noms this year. Not saying I'm predicting that for all of them, but it's fully possible. It's just a moronic idea.

Also paying attention to live TV ratings in 2018 is really dumb and regressive. They could nominate the ten highest grossing movies of the year every year and ratings would still drop. It's a different thing. That's a huge reason why this is so dumb. It won't help whatsoever.

When Avatar 2 is released and makes over 4 billies, how will they choose which category it goes in.

It would be sad if it gets put into the pat on the back category even if it could have won best picture.

So who wants to bet that the actual reason the academy is making this award is to avoid nominating Black Panther for BP.

It's more of knowing they ain't nominated a run of the mill cape film and they're scared of the backlash. It's the backlash they're avoiding, BP wasn't getting a best picture nom.
