I didn't think it would really hit that but frankly I did think 75m or so was doable. Has tons of buzz and has been selling tickets great in my area/DC. Disappointing.

Even though I thought it could go as high as 15M this weekend, I didn't expect much more than 60M total. Focus is avoiding conservative areas on this one, so IDK how strong expansion prospects are.

It's been selling great in my area and almost certainly other metropolitan areas but it's probably tanking in places like red states (cause obviously). Still, should make about $35-40M (which would also make it one of Lee's 5 biggest movies ever), which should be enough to keep it in the awards conversation, if not in contention to win anything major.

I think Kate McKinnon is great on SNL.  Some of her stuff is downright hilarious.  I also find her unappealing and annoying as fuck in movies.  It just seems like every one of her characters is over the top in so many ways and at least right now, it looks like audiences feel the same way.  Almost every film she has been in has either tanked or underperformed in some ways.

Just go down the list:

The Spy Who Dumped Me:  Probably less than 45 mill finish

Rough Night out and out tanked with 22 mill

Office Christmas Party did okay with 54 mill

Ghostbusters did okay but not as much as most thought it would with 128 mill

Masterminds was dumped and did 17 mill

I know you can't put all the blame on her but some of it must be that audiences don't really care for her brand of comedy on the big screen.  For me personally she annoys the hell out of me at times and I thought she was the worst thing about Spy.

I'm sure she will get better roles down the line but for now, she isn't really a good actress to cast in your film.

I have no idea what he is using to come up with that number but I have it conservatively with 40.3 mill for the weekend.

She's just waiting to find the right movie to showcase her considerable talents (cause none of her films so far have been it).

She wasn’t the lead in any of those until now where she’s still second to Mila Kunis.

Thanks for pointing out she wasn't the lead.  I thought she had she was.  :redcapes:

I'm pointing out that she's kind of annoying in her films.  And this turns people off once they see it.  She might not be the lead but she is part of the film and once people see her in it they stay away.

This is from the summer game thread but it's interesting how the summer played out:

Right now, here is the top 15 of the summer..obviously this can change

1) Avengers:  680+

2) I2: 600

3) JWFK:  415 or so

4)  DP2:  318

5) Solo:  213

6) Ant-man:  200

7) MI6:  145 and counting

😎 HT3:  143 and counting

9) O8:  143

10) MM:  100 and more

11) EQ2:  90+

12) MEG:  OW of about 40 means it will do at least 90

12) Game Night:  69

13) Cook club:  68

 14) Purge:  68

15) Skyscraper:  68+

Crazy Rich Asians is the only one that has a chance to supplant one of the bottom films.  I don't think anyone is going to go 15/15.....I don't think anyone had Book Club in the top 15.....interesting summer no doubt.

I agree. Me and the wife watched the trailer for Spy who dumped me recently and my wife's response was "Does Kate McKinnon have only one setting in which to play her characters?"

If Ghostbusters was a hit, she probably would have been a breakout from the movie and might have branched out more.

LD Entertainment can kiss goodbye to any future wide release prospects they had after the bombage of Dog Days. At least Aviron and Entertainment Studios were able to turn movies already available online into hits (especially the latter which has now spawned a franchise).

I can see her doing more serious work like Kristen Wiig has post-SNL once she leaves the show (which is probably once her contract is up anyway).

IT WORKED!!!!!!!!!

But now I’m more confused.

A lot of our general reasoning is summed up in that report. I'm not supposed to divulge specifics on the official Boxoffice tracking, but it's one of those movies where I personally think it could end up on either end of the spectrum.

It has the star and a well-known fan character to help it do very well, plus minimal competition, but it also has some of the pre-release indicators that plagued Fantastic Four, Green Lantern, Justice League, and Solo. If buzz improves and reviews turn out great, it could probably open higher than that current $50M ceiling. If not... *shrug*

Truthfully, it's one of those movies I don't find very fun to analyze because there is that potential for a negative turnout. I hope it does well for all involved, though.
