Crazy Rich Asians is going to slay next weekend. Want to keep expectations in check, but I don't see a reason it can't do 30m+ for the 5 day.

It's coming for a The Help/We're the Millers very leggy surprise late summer smash type of run. It's likely going to lead for three weeks until The Nun comes out with nothing coming out between it and that movie looking to make much of any kind of impact.

Crazy Rich Asians is gonna be a very interesting movie to predict...I'd love to know the demo breakdown of the presales to know if this is breaking out of its prime demo and crossing into a true all demo movie, or if it will fail to catch on outside of this demo.  I'd love to know how it's doing in say, New England, vs DC Metro to see if it's catching on everywhere, or just where its prime demo is most represented...

It's like - is this Girls Trip box office or Tyler Perry box office?  (Or even higher/lower...I think lower is getting increasingly unlikely)...

It'd be insane if it performed like The Help or We're The Millers with $150-160m and end up becoming WB's biggest film of the summer.

Given that minority empowerment lately in art elite class, and favorable review(100% RT with 8.1/10, 77 on MC), don't feel surprise if this scream Oscar

Crazy Rich Asians probably isn't getting any Oscar noms (aside from maybe a Best Popular Movie nomination depending on how much it makes and what they consider the benchmark to be "popular" lol) but Golden Globe nominations are likely.

The Meg’s debut is insanely good! Considering it’s a film with Jason Statham front and center, this is an amazing debut for him and outgross comparable titles in the same vein. This film could’ve been a Snakes On A Plane 2.0, but The interest sparked its opening. So hopefully a total around $110-$120 million domestic.

Mission Impossible is holding on strong, and should hold on  for the next few weeks and should on-par with Ghost Protocol.

Christopher Robin took a beatdown, but should break-even with its budget at the end with $75 million total or so.

Slenderman made it in the low teens, but still it’s budget was between $28-$30 million and it wont likely reach that level due to nasty word of mouth.

While Meg also did very well this weekend, BlackKklansmen did very well with a estimated $10.7 million, given its positive word of mouth it should sneak past $30 million

Meg dom over China total looks very likely.

edit: even the dom ow could beat China ow. looking at China thread Meg needs 20% Sun drop or lower to do 45+ fss (which is feasible) and that may not be enough to beat dom ow.

The MEG increased on Sunday in China, +8%. :ohmygod:

$52M OW in China, even more than in the US. :ohmyzod:

Great news. China Sundays do that at times. Meg got some shows back from the competition and that will give it solid weekdays before Friday again being tough due to new releases. Hope it manages ~2x for 105. Really shouldn't have done sub-150 if dom is looking at 110+.

Dom v China of Meg is an anomaly. Money left on the table? Needed a better release date I guess.

WB films this year,

Tomb $57 vs $80 ....+40%

RPO $137 vs $220 ... +60%

Rampage $99 vs $156 ... +57%

Meg $110 vs $105 ... -5% (using ~2.5x dom multi and ~2x China)

The shark sold that movie not Statham. He’s had enough solo led films that prove this. On average his films make 20-25m dollars so he has a very limited audience.

He has an home video following too, that can have decided to go to the theater because of the giant spectacle/budget versus is small action movie they rent.

It is also the message it send to audience has a casting choice of what the movie tone will be about. You know it will be fun violence with a close to superhero protagonist, cheesy pun humors/one liner, it send a strong don't worry about anything serious ever going on here signal to the target audience.

The shark and the brilliant marketing sold most of the movie no doubt, but how would it have opened with Clive Owen in the lead for example or even Butler ?
