Alpha was very good. I went to an early evening show with my son and he actually sat through the entire movie. It was short and kept us entertained the entire time. It’s too bad that it won’t break out. It deserves to. I cannot believe that this movie cost 80 million. On what did they spend the money? How could a movie like The Grey, which was similar in terms of scenery cost only 25 million and this cost more than three times that amount?

Asians seem to rule this August at the BO.

The Meg is a partial Chinese production.

Mile 22 features Indonesian martial artist.

Searching stars John Cho.

Not to mention breaking out CRA.

And I am going to win the Summer Game. 😁

last week had a +2,236 net gain in theater counts.
this week should be looking at another +2,000 net gain with 10,000 going to the openers CRA, Mile 22 and Alpha, and -8000
going to the holdovers.

next week sees two wide releases in Happytime Murders going in 3,000+ and A.X.L in about ~1,600 despite being a CGI
pet dog flick.  I don't think all the holdovers from this week will loose any more than 4,600 theaters total next week.
If Happytime Murders does not hit well in pre-sales and is pointing at under 15 million opening weekend,
then #1 should be close with The Meg and Crazy Rich Asians.

The weekend after, Labor Day Weekend, sees post-WW2 drama Operation Finale opening Wednesday, and Kin (Lionsgate) and Ya Veremos
(Pantelion) opening Friday.  Ya Veremos is going moderate and Liongsate has Kin opening at 1,500 for now, which is small for
a sci-fi action movie with James Franco.  Also, Searching might or might not be expanding to 2,000.
#1 should be between 4 or 5 films that weekend.

Alpha weirdly overperformed at my theatre tonight. Wonder if it means the 3.5 number could go up, or if it’s just a total anomaly. But given I was thinking it would totally bomb and do our equivalent of 2M today and it did 6.8M it’s not too bad of a performance.

Mess at the thread being this dead when there's a good, groundbreaking movie topping the charts. Meanwhile when Spider-Fuck 47 goes #1 the thread is 600 pages long.

Uh, okay.

Realize early Saturday that there's probably a weekend thread by now.

Find it.

4 pages (at least 1 of which is probably just people commenting on the thread being small, tbh).

Mile 22's CinemaScore taking way too long to be added...

I guess the cliffhanger ending won't be everyone's cup of tea. I'm curious about it.

‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Wealthier Than ‘Meg’ At Weekend B.O. With $21M+ – Late Night Update

WRITE-THRU FRIDAY PM following midday post: Refresh for chart According to industry estimates, Warner Bros.’ Crazy Rich Asians is still looking to best the studio’s shark movie The Meg for the top-spot at the weekend B.O., $21.6M to $20MCrazy Rich Asians won Friday with $7M, to Meg‘s $5.9M.

STX’s Mile 22 is close to being the lowest opening for a Peter Berg-Mark Wahlberg combo with $14.3M, well below the wide debut of their Lone Survivor ($37.8M, $125M) and Deepwater Horizon ($20.2M, $61.4M final), and just ahead of Patriots Day ($11.6M, $31.9M). Pic’s projected start is also below the high teens that some tracking services were spotting. Critics hate Mile 22 at 20% Rotten, calling this movie about “a black ops unit escorting a whistle-blower through dangerous streets” (Rolling Stone) confusing, and a chaotic mess. It also doesn’t help that the film is following in the wake of the best received and reviewed Mission: Impossible of all-time. Fallout is bound to be the highest grossing title in the franchise of all-time stateside, passing Mission: Impossible II‘s $215M. This weekend the sixthquel soaked up $11.1M in fourth place, -41% in weekend 4. Yes, Mile 22 is beating Fallout, but that’s possibly $11M-plus that could be in STX’s pocket.

With an estimated $9.4M in 5th place and a budget in the high $50Ms, Alpha is a bust. An opening in the high $20M sphere would have been considered safe.
