Then you have actors whom audiences are eager to pay to see in a specific role, but who can't draw outside that role...Chris Hemsworth is an example;People love him as Thor but don't seem interested in him in any other role.

I remember people being shocked at seeing Schwimmer in the early episode of "Band of Brothers" where he played a Army officer who was a total Alpha Hotel to his men...and proved to be incompetent when it came to leading them in the field. Schwimmer was excellent in the role, but audineces just has problems seeing him as a very unlikable character.

With Hemsworth, it doesn’t help that his movies outside of Marvel have been bad for the most part. Like what if Men In Black International production went as it was supposed to and wasn’t sabotaged by a producer who just felt like it?

Also, one could make the argument that Ross wasn’t very likable either. I’ve gotten the sense Schwimmer feels the same way.

Old school starpower has been dead for a while. There are a few actors like Tom Hanks who can carry a $30 million movie on their name recognition. There may not be any who can carry a $100 million+ movie on their own except maybe DiCaprio and even then he needs all the help he can get - great directors, great reviews etc. etc.

"There is plenty of overseas play to come with France, Brazil, Spain, Russia, Korea, Mexico, Japan and Italy counterprogramming through late December".  Deadline

Article from last week but the movie hasn't opened in any of those markets yet.

Hope it can crack 90-100M total at least.

Universal’s holiday pic gave its heart to $8Mworth of new business this session. Across 40 markets, the Emilia Clarke-starrer has now grossed $36.2M for $67.9M global.

There were 16 markets added this weekend, with good holds in already opened hubs. Comparatively, the film is running 6% above Yesterday, 21% over The Intern, 23% ahead of Crazy Rich Asians and almost double About Time.

France was a No. 7 opener at $874K, but above comps and looking toward holiday business. Brazil debuted to No. 1 with $600K from 478 locations.

The UK leads all play with a 27% dip this session for $12.8M to date. Germany shed 26% for $4M so far and Australia is at $5.3M after a 35% slide in weekend 4.

Russia, Korea, Mexico and Japan will be unwrapped this coming session.

Looks like it is in the bag as it opens in most countries (a few left):

People say that romcoms are dead but here's one with a small budget and mediocre reviews, yet (with star power) it could make $100M worldwide. Has there actually been a high-profile romcom flop lately or are studios just not trying anymore? Last Christmas will remain a modest hit at best, but that's already better than many original movies in the last couple of months.

Aloha was a pretty high-profile bomb given the talent involved (Cooper was coming off of American Sniper and both he and Stone were coming off of Oscar nominations at the time) but it was a movie that was mostly shrugged off even before it was released considering the Sony leaks revealed the movie was in trouble. For the most part it seems like studios just aren't trying anymore or are just leaving the genre to streaming, and the ones that have done well like Trainwreck (which was sold as an Amy Schumer vehicle) or Crazy Rich Asians (which was based on a bestseller and had major cultural significance) have had qualifiers attached to them. Even Last Christmas' worldwide total is probably benefitting more from its George Michael connection than it is from being a romcom.

I wouldn’t say star power had much to do with it. I can’t imagine this is appealing to many Game of Thrones fans.

I think it’s more to do with it being the only Christmas film. Here in the UK, Emma and George Michael help.

Although the whole George Michael angle is weeeak.
