Christmas movie released by Illumination, that shamelessy keeps marketing it like it was Minions-related. Sub-300M OS is a joke.

Previous Dr Seuss movies were perceived as 2nd-tier products by audience, but here we're moving on another level. Also, the Grinch not being a very well-known property might actually help OS, as it will be seen as a new original story.

I'd go with an OS gross between Moana and Monsters University.

Universal/Illumination’s The Grinch has a staggered release overseas with the first 23 markets going this weekend. Of those, the UK and Brazil are the only majors. The total for the debut frame is $12.7M with nine No. 1s including the UK at $6.53M. The overall start is slightly above where we were seeing it ahead of the weekend (in the $10M range). With domestic, the global debut is $78.7M.

 

Dr Seuss is a much bigger brand domestically, and familiarity offshore is somewhat limited to English-speaking markets while Germany is also a fan (in part thanks to the Ron Howard-directed 2000 movie that was led by Jim Carrey). With a typically thrifty production cost of $75M before P&A, Illumination should be able to tap into its own brand, and the holiday theme, even if it can’t fully rely on the IP being the major offshore draw. One of the film’s most successful trailers, at 2.5M YouTube views, was the one where the Minions actually watch The Grinch trailer in a theater. The film’s three trailers gained 262M views globally.

 

 

Benedict Cumberbatch voices the green grouch in this animated offering directed by Yarrow Cheney and Scott Mosier. The UK start at 559 locations is in line with Paddington, and ahead of Frozen, Coco and Moana. In Brazil, at 571, the Whoville gang came in above Sing and landed No. 2. Scandinavia did solid business with a No. 1 in Norway and $747K at 150 to track ahead of The Secret Life Of Pets, Trolls, Cocoand Sing.

The Grinch will expand throughout the rest of the year with France, Australia, Italy, Germany and Spain at the end of the month. A December 14 China date has also been confirmed.

There's no way it opened above Sing in Brazil AND came in second. Sing opened with 3,4M USD (which adjust to 3M today) while last weekend Bohemian Rhapsody did 2,4M. And the Grinch actually landed second because Comscore gives daily placements on twitter, so this whole thing is impossible unless BR increased a lot (which I think DL would have reported)

I imagine it's going to do decently in the English speaking markets but elsewhere could be tricky.

The fact it only had 9 openings at #1 out of 23 isn't a good sign, though we can't take the Brazil OW as an indicator, as a movie centered on Xmas is obviously a hard sell down under, where Xmas (where celebrated) is far far away.

The key weekend is the last of the month, when it opens in all major European countries.

Well, the european openings seem fine, around or above Sing. However, the Asian ones are laughably bad. Latin America remains a wild-card because some countries are starved for animation but it opens after Ralph in some places (And December, in general, is gonna be a blood-bath in terms of screens available), although that Brazilian opening doesn't look good. 

 

This isn't going to be a bomb by any means but this is clearly heading towards an OS gross lower than Sing IMO.

Stealing $9.4M at the international box office this weekend, Universal/Illumination’s family pic has put $25.2M in the sack in 23 offshore markets. The global cume is now $151.7M with much more rollout ahead. There were no new openings this session, but strong holds and increases for Saturday and Sunday. The top play remains the UK with $12.83M to date, taking the No. 2 spot this frame behind the debut of FB2. The weekend’s $4.9M is above Big Hero 6, Coco and Moana.

 

Brazil saw a hike of 16% that was aided by a national holiday. The total there is $3.1M. Drops elsewhere were minimal including in the Nordics and the UAE.

There are still 49 markets to open on the holiday Dr Seuss adaptation, including such majors as France, Australia, Italy, Germany, Japan, Spain, Mexico, Korea, China and Russia.

The next two weekends are really important for this movie

 

 

But I don't see it having a lot of success in Latin America

 

People are really exited about Ralph 2 and they're going head to head in a lot of markets

Domestically it only has to survive Ralph this week, after that it's a wasteland till right before Xmas, meaning The Grinch will be the only Xmas movie (and named Grinch!) and also one of the two strong options for the family (as FB2 failed domestically, and will be quickly forgotten in December). 250M is locked, and a total close to 300M quite likely as long as it drops sub-25% this weekend.

Can't see this finishing below 600M WW.
