THURSDAY:

1 - Aquaman

2 - Bohemian Rhapsody

3 - Creed 2

4 - Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse

5 - Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald

Quote

Sony’s Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, the animated spin-off of the superhero franchise, first entered cinemas last Saturday (Dec 8), placing an impressive sixth in that weekend’s chart just from its grosses on Dec 8 and 9 with £750,000. The film has its full opening from Dec 12 and this weekend’s official figure will be boosted by those extensive previews.

Spider-verse in South Korea after 3 days (Wed-Fri) plus previews:

That's terrible considering South Korea has a huge Marvel fanbase and are routinely #2 or #3 biggest OS market for their films. I guess being an animated film does make a huge difference in perception in many markets.

Things look ugly in Germany as well. The latest trend has it at 60k admissions for the weekend, which pales even when compared to Mortal Engines' bad opening (100k). It's at about 1/3 of the size general expectations appeared to be at. As of right now, Spider-Man starts in 7th place, even behind the 7th weekend of Bohemian Rapsody.

Not sure how expensive tickets are, but I doubt that this movie will finish its run with more than maybe $2-3m or so unless something truly unexpected happens.

Well, if WOM kicks in, it should help big time unless the film starts so low in some territories that it doesn't have the time to do so. OS audiences can be so weird about some animated films. This should make all the money in the world, it's incredible and most people agree.

In my experience it can have a lot of reasons, e.g. a bad translation, not matching the local cultural/humour/.... also the release of local movies too often get forgotten as a possibility.

Also not all movies get released ww at the same date, sometimes other movies of the same genre,.... or e.g. animated is/are too time-near in a few countries and so on

As @Charlie Jatinder pointed out in the Weekend Thread, it seems to be breaking out in India at the least.

Since India is usually one of the OS strongholds for Spidey, surprised the film didn't include the Indian Spider-Man, Pavitr Prabhakar. Maybe in the sequel.

Naah. It won't break out. It's just doing good for animation films, nothing major. Will be half of Incredible 2.

Overall, the webslinger snared $38M this weekend from 29,000+ screens in 53 markets. The international cume is now $64.8M. The Bob Persichetti/Peter Ramsey/Rodney Rothman-helmed pic that’s co-scripted by Phil Lord saw some great holds heading into the holidays including: the Philippines (+21%), Portugal (+6%), Israel (-11%), Australia (-20%), Malaysia (-24%), the UK (-25%), Switzerland (-29%), Germany (-32%) and Vietnam (-32%).

Upcoming major markets are Mexico and Italy this week, followed by Brazil in January and Japan (where Spidey overindexes) on March 28.

200M OS

There is no way this movie is making 200 mil OS lol. It's going to make around 50-60 mil China and 50 mil OS without China (the movie grossed 5 million last weekend if you exclude China). Let's also say Japan gives another 10 million. Gives at total of 120-130 mil. It can gross 150 mil if Japan overperforms but 200 mil is impossible.

Domestic is much lower than Lego Batman at the same stage and the distance between both films seems to furthering apart (Lego Batman 12 day: 107 mil vs Spidee-verse 12 day: 73.7 mil)

The movie is only passing 300 mil if it over performs massively and that hasn't happened yet. Even the Chinese gross is middling.

The date for this film is fucked up. I'm avoiding threads and posts of this film like a plague because it's only released here in January 10th. Both Bumblebee and Spider-Verse fucked up not moving their dates. If anything, they should be afraid of Mary Poppins, if not Aquaman. I never saw the appeal of Mary Poppins, but  this film could have been SO MUCH MORE. Release it on February, on the black history month. Yes there are other animations on february, but at least it'd be less crowded. Also, GET AN WORLDWIDE RELEASE DATE. Oh well.
