CHAPTER 3: THE NUMBERS GAME

 

March 6-8: Audiences 'Gotta Go, Gotta Go' to One Piece

As a new studio finds its bearing in CAYOM, their first major release, an adaptation of the anime 'One Piece', is sailing off to a decent start. With a $54m opening weekend off of a B+ cinemascore, the film likely isn't going to change the world forever, but it's giving audiences a fun treat for spring break. Also, Worldwide numbers may be a keep place to watch the film's potential. Otherwise, 'Blue and Gold' began to slightly catch up to 'Pokemon' while 'The Female Man' has a nice hold, one that could potentially hint at coming close to $90m. 'Stories From Eden' doesn't look to truly catch on, but it shouldn't be too much of a loss either.

March 13-15: 'Pillars' Established for New Franchise

Predictions were all over the place for the long awaited first entry to the new Numerical franchise 'Pillars of Eternity', and while it didn't meet the loftiest of predictions, it did manage to actually exceed studio projections with a $76m weekend. The A- Cinemascore is also quite solid, considering the density of the material. The adaptational nature of it may make it slightly frontloaded, but we have reason to believe this should have a nice run overall. 'Spirit Curse', much like the movie itself, failed to leave much of an impact, and 'One Piece' took a bit of a hit from nearly direct competition. Recovery does seem inevitable, though. 'Pokemon' also got the benefit of some double features with 'Pillars', softening its drop.

March 20-22: 'Pillars' Hold Up, Projections Hit 'Mark'

'Pillars' dropped a bit less than initially expected, a good sign for things to come. While it's unlikely to top B&G/P:RotR, it's still on track to safely ensure that a sequel will be on the way, especially with very promising overseas numbers so far. 'Marked-Up Time' balanced a niche premise with decent star power and the appeal of Lord and Miller to fall nicely in line with projections. However, the B- Cinemascore is a bit concerning, with audiences criticizing the confusing and somewhat bizarre plotting. Here's hoping in can still manage decent legs. 'Khan Bernarda Alba' also begins to have a healthy expansion, but it's uncertain if the reviews will limit its potential. 'Spirit Curse' also somehow had a good drop for a horror film so far this year, so miracles can happen, I guess.

March 27-29: Endless Defies Imagination, 'Carnosaur' Extinct Upon Arrival

As the first major animated release since 'Don't Let the Pigeon Drive', the studio's first 300M animated hit, it became a question what 'Can You Imagine' would do, given its long journey to the big screen, accumulating in terrific reviews, strong buzz, and exciting visuals. The answer? Beyond your wildest imagination. The film became one of the biggest openings ever for an original film with over $85m, and the cherry on top? An A+ Cinemascore. This is going to be in it for the long haul. The same cannot be said for 'Carnosaur', whose R rating (limiting much of its potential audience) and lack of clear marketing outside of the horror elements bogged it down, causing it to open to about half of what it was projected to do. The B Cinemascore could at least help it save some face, but I wouldn't be too sure.

OW very good. Think weekends 2 and 3 dropped too harsh given no big direct competition in Weekend 2 and Can You Imagine in Week 3 targets the family demo, something that a 2.5 hour plus fantasy film aimed squarely at more mature audiences wouldn't notice losing.

 

But it's doing well.

True, but I can tip my hat and say that it stabilizes quickly into April.

Also with that $86M OW, I’m starting to wonder if Can You Imagine? can leg it out to $400M DOM. It needs a 4.65 multiple which makes things a bit tough but no competition until Our City 2 helps and the weekend after it, it can have double features with GOM.
