Dear Evan Hansen — the Tony-winning musical that took Broadway by storm last year — is on its way to the big screen.

Universal has acquired the film rights to the musical, and Stephen Chbosky, the director behind family film Wonder, is in early negotiations to direct.

Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, the duo behind the music for Fox's The Greatest Showman and who won an Oscar for their "City of Stars" from La La Land, are behind the music and lyrics.

Dear Evan Hansen tackles adolescent mental illness, following a high schooler plagued with social anxiety who uses his classmate's suicide for his own emotional gain. Stars Ben Platt and Rachel Bay Jones earned Tony Awards for their performances. Steven Levenson, the original author of Dear Evan Hansen, will adapt his story for the screen.

A decent indicator of what might come online in Hollywood’s back yard are the productions that received this year’s allotment of California tax credit incentives — including Damien Chazelle’s “Babylon” at Paramount, Universal’s “Dear Evan Hansen” musical movie adaptation, Amazon’s Lucy and Desi Arnaz biopic starring Cate Blanchett, and Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest from Focus Features. None of the companies behind those titles had updates to share on their shooting status on or after June 12.  Those projects are required to enact one day of filming to qualify for millions in rebates, within 180 days of the allotment. Extensions were granted after the pandemic hit.

EXCLUSIVE: Hot on the heels of starring in Booksmart and the series Unbelievable, Kaitlyn Dever is in talks for the female lead in the movie musical adaptation of Dear Evan Hansen. Ben Platt is expected to reprise his stage role as the title character in the film, with Stephen Chbosky (Wonder) directing. Music and lyrics are by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul from their work on the stage hit.

They need a better lead than Ben Platt. This will be like the original Rent cast playing people in their early 20s in the movie

JORDAN 👏 FISHER 👏 (yes I know he's the same age as Platt shut up)

and of course the obligatory T******* C*******

guys good luck finding someone better than ben platt to play the role

some of platt's earlier roles like ricki and the flash and billy lynn (both of which he's bad and miscast in) were also produced by daddy.

Let's just be grateful Papa Platt didn't cast him in any of the various Disney movies he's produced or will be producing. One can assume they overruled the suggestion that he play Eric in the event Harry Styles passed.

Not that I'm implying Nepotism but Ben Platt's brother played Fiyero in Wicked on Broadway which is produced by.... Papa Platt.
