The MCU seems allergic to getting directors who've had any experience with action scenes, which is especially bad for a film based on a character that was inspired by Bruce Lee. Short Term 12's meant to be incredible though, so hopefully the character work is strong even if the action is all gonna be second-unit.

Short Term 12, The Glass Castle, and Just Mercy all have Brie Larson in a starring role (though Just Mercy’s main character is Killmonger). Wonder if she threw in a recommendation.

Also seems to be collaborating with Coogler on a TV series, though there’s been no news on that for like 2 years. Anyway, this has become the archetypal MCU pick by now, someone totally new to blockbusters, without a big movie filmography, but often with a take on the character that they like and at least one critically outstanding work in indie film or TV — Whedon, Russos, Gunn, Waititi, Coogler, Boden & Fleck, Shortland, Zhao. Seems to be working out fine for them so far.

The way I see it, there are already a lot of great martial arts movies out there so the MCU wouldn't be doing anything special by making the action the focus. How many of those movies feature an Asian American or center an Asian American story, however? Not many, if any at all. And given that this movie has an Asian American writer and director, I think it's safe to say there is going to be a good amount of focus on what it's like to be Asian in America. That to me is more compelling that just delivering another great action movie.

Well, I was thinking Mike Moh could've gotten it after that trailer for Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, but Steven Yeun is one of my favorite actors currently working right now, and this would cement his status as an A-lister, so I'd be all for it.

I remember around the red carpet premiere for Avengers: Infinity War that there was this picture circulating of Steven Yeun reunited with former TWD Star Danai Gurira having a conversation with Kevin Fiege. May or may not have been related to this. People were joking about him possibly showing up in Black Panther 2 as Namor.

I'm waiting for someone credible to call this fake news because I'm not buying it, nor do I think Yeun would be good choice for the role. Like Mike Moh, Yeun is Korean and I definitely think the role should go to a Chinese actor or one of Chinese descent. Asians are not interchangeable.

I got your point, and a chinese/chinese-american actor will be better for the China box office, but Chadwick wasn't African, Tom Holland isn't american, neither Scarlett is russian. This case can be more sensitive, but nothing uncommon.

Well Chadwick is playing an African from a fictional country. If Shang-Chi were from a fictional Asian country, then I think it would be a non-issue as well. It's also not really same as with Holland or Scarlett because there is a whole history behind viewing Asians as interchangeable, which is based on ignorance and stereotypes. I would really want Marvel not to play into that, especially since many Asians would find it disappointing or problematic. Beyond that, I just can't see Yeun in the role at all. He doesn't strike me as an action star.

Due to start shooting at the end of May, the production reportedly budgeted at nearly $300 million will be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, whose breakout movie was 2013’s Short Term 12, which starred Brie Larson as a woman working in a group home for teenagers.

“We are very excited to have Marvel return to Australia following the incredible success of Thor: Ragnarok,” Fifield said.

NSW Minister for the Arts Don Harwin said he expects the NSW spend will be more than $100 million and will create up to 770 jobs for local screen professionals.

“This is a big-budget superhero film which the NSW government has secured for Sydney through the Made in NSW fund and is the first Marvel Studios movie to be based in NSW,” Harwin said.

“The film needs a large workforce of highly specialised special effects technicians and will also require sophisticated stunts, all of which NSW’s incredibly skilled and experienced screen industry can deliver.

“It will also provide opportunities to develop and train a diverse workforce under the leadership of some of the world’s best film professionals.”

Article really reads like May 2019 to me. That would be a really fast casting turnaround, but maybe.

And if they mean gross budget rather than net, “nearly 300” doesn’t look that crazy compared to BP.

Edit: Lol, it’s an Australian article, obviously they mean nearly 300M AUD=213M USD 😅

That’s probably the net budget estimate then, again not too unreasonable compared to BP.
