It’s not “bizarrely insecure” to point out how terrible that list was. The only people who are coming off bizarrely insecure here are the ones with an odd need to “defend” critics (who I’m sure don’t care in the first place what bad taste in MCU movies I think they have 🤷‍♂️)

I don't view it as terrible. I looked through it and there were some rankings I thought were crazy and some that were expected and some that were surprising but I agreed with. I find it interesting to see where the deviations are.

I know right? He's such a moron for not liking the same stuff you do. How dare he think differently from your own subjective opinions!

Fanboys (across all fandoms, don't think I'm targeting MCU fans you nerds) are bizarrely insecure when others, especially movie critics, don't think exactly like them. I'm not entirely sure why this is such a big issue to these guys, when you consider the movies they drool over are beloved by millions and dominate the cultural conversation, but I guess if they need to feel as if the world is out to get them for whatever reason, then I guess that's their prerogative.

Eric, you're missing the small picture here

He ranked Thor: The Dark World TENTH.

That's Armond White level of WTFery

That's just begging to be laughed at and the world needs all the humor it can get.

Not mine. General reception.

Yeah fair enough but the context @Jamiem shared the list was that if their assessment of 24 films is this, it doesn't really match with general audience.

I'm sure he can come up with a better justification for that ranking than you can for whatever ranking you have lol.

I bet he can't.

But that's not the point. Point is what he say don't matter in context of MCU if his views are that far away from the general reception of the MCU.

Its like asking a 5 year old ranking for someone like PTA. They don't matter.

IW and Endgame outside the top 20 is just ridiculous regardless of how the other 22 movies are ordered. There’s really nothing more to say.

Now to be clear, since some people seem to like attacking a strawman here, the fact that’s it’s a comically bad mcu ranking doesn’t indicate some kind of like, moral or intellectual failing. It just indicates… a very poor ranking of MCU movies.

Anyway, this is an utterly dumb way to have taken up a page. Clearly I shouldn’t have responded to lorddemaxus and I’ve finally taken the step of putting them on ignore for everyone’s sake.

I honestly don't get why specific opinions are so relevant anyway, for good and bad, who cares. It's cool seing what people have to say and that's it, not a big deal.

The only specific opinion i really care is my own, other than that i could't care less about who like it or not, i find atrocious seeing people attacking critics because they aren't better than anyone, ultimatelly it's just a opinion, if you disagreed ignore it.

Ok, if you think so lol. You should be happy you never will be in a situation where you'll have to test your theory out.

Man, I *really* shouldn’t have clicked show comment here.

What a weird way to phrase this. If Jat is on a situation to test his theory out he’ll be fine, because he’s right.

You’ve got a weird fetish for highbrow contrarian critic-worshipping kind of takes and it’s just exhausting, I don’t know why I didn’t have you on ignore before now tbh.

My own personal touchiness as an MCU fan comes from actually growing up as a comic book fan. Buying comic books was always niche and geeky.
To have those same characters be culturally dominant is great (!) and strange.
When people attack the genre, it’s harder to shake off. We weren’t born rich. We fluked into it.

I don't buy the whole concept of good and bad taste anyway. I don't agree with that list but it doesn't mean it's anything bad or wrong in having those opinions. Everyone's taste is different which is what makes talking about movies interesting in the first place.

I agree. I like Thor TDW unironically. Yes I agree with alot of the criticisms (lord the Dark Elves look cheaper/lamer than something you would find in an old school Doctor Who episode) but I enjoy it on a dumb 1980s cult sci-fi/fantasy movie level. And that's a film that the MCU more or less in Endgame subtly treated as a red-headed stepchild entry in its own canon (or am I reading too much into the scene of the Avengers not impressed when Thor relates events of that episode, except for earnest Scott Lang?)

I’ll never understand why MCU (and fandom in general) is so insecure and hostile when these films are the most popular in the world. I feel that provides enough contentment. A lot of the complaints against these movies are valid. Why does it matter if it’s a 70 on Rotten Tomatoes compared to an 80? The audience scores are higher and the box office will break records. These movies are not exempt from criticism. But of course the majority of population have no problems. I’ll also never understand why the haters are so insistent. I recognize their frustration stems from Hollywood abolishing mid-budget adult films but that was inevitable even before the takeover. Pointing out bad reviews won’t change minds because, again, the majority population seeing these movies do not care while most critics are not so lenient. There’s no deep agenda

I’m just happy because I never imagined an event like Endgame would happen. I still find other sources of entertainment, too. My favorite films this year are Old, Petite Maman, Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy, World To Come and Suicide Squad. Judging these reviews, I’ll probably enjoy Shang-Chi. I don’t feel the need to defend or go into attack mode

I'm not going to fully enter this discussion because i don't think is needed.

But i feel the need of keep saying: no one need to watch dozens of movies to have a valid opinion. This type of thinking suggest that your view only matter if you saw 1000 movies and have baggage to think what you think. You can like or dislike movies for whatever reason, art is ultimatelly subjective and this have to be respected, you can disagreed of "specialists", they're not gods.

Of course you can measure technical parts of a movie, and critics have this baggage to make their reviews and base their points, but only to help audience to decide if they are interested in watch the movie or not, this is why they exist. Despite all their knowledge, they're not better than the audience, and they're not necessarily right either, like i said it's just a opinion and the real view that matters is your own as audience.

I say this in a position that i actually try to watch many different movies as i can, but i can't think my views or critic views are better than anyone because of this, is an unfair thing to do.

People here seem fine with most of my opinions (maybe I lean into that auterism thing a little hard, but that's it). And yeah, I like critics who I think have interesting thoughts.

I can relate, though I would add my 007 fandom since childhood so the idea of formulaic (to a fault) pulpy serials doesn't exactly rattle my brain like it does some folks. Even at my height of comic fandom back in the day I didn't read every book consistently because (1) No time (2) not enough money (3) Lack of access or most importantly (4) I went "meh" and moved on. You stuck around with certain books because you liked the characters, the artwork, whatever.

But I've come to the point that I'm secure in my fandom that I'm not easily offended when people not part of the spandex cult say nah. It's why I rolled my eyes when my fellow Marvelites got anal about Scorsese's comments. We're firmly entrenched enough that even if this stuff fades from super popularity, it'll keep going on some level. We're not the underdogs anymore, guys.
